19.01.2022 The Whale shark is a filter feeding shark and the largest shark known to exist. They can be as long as 18 metres (60 feet!) They are harmless to humans but unfortunately the reverse is not true as shark products increase in popularity. #justsnorkel #Repost #whaleshark @scubadiving.adventures via @francois65bothma

18.01.2022 An important species to keep in mind this time of year if you are in Northern Australia. Photo by @daviddoubilet. Box jellyfish feeding on shrimp. Box jellyfish (Chironex fleckeri) are one if the worlds most venomous creatures. Each tentacle has 500,000 (+\-) explosive cells called nematocysts with a microscopic harpoon that injects venom into prey. Encounters with larger specimens can lead to human death while others are extremely painful but treatable. These guys have 24 p...rimitive eyes that detect light and help them navigate and avoid obstacles. They are active hunters reaching swimming speeds of 4 + mph. Northern Australia uses nets to protect and enclose some swimming beaches during "stinger season". We wear full body lycra suits, gloves and hoods as defense against stings. 13.01.2022 The Green Sea Turtle is the second largest of the sea turtles and are commonly seen over 1.5 meters in length on the Great Barrier Reef. While the exact age is not known, they live at least a hundred years. The thought that they could live to over 150 as suggested in Disney's Little Nemo could very well be true. #Repost @starrsey #justsnorkel

13.01.2022 Titan triggerfish are a colorful but dangerous fish. At thirty inches long and a reputation for harassing divers the titan triggerfish can really hurt people. Indigenous to the indo-pacific region this fish is known to nibble chunks out of flippers and leave bruising were it bits and rams into the body of divers in some extreme cases it has knocked some divers unconscious and taken bloody bits of ear as a snack. It is unknown as to the cause of this behavior but experts guess its to defend territory or their nest. Divers Look out for this colorful fish at over 2 feet long it an cause serous injury. #Repost @badassscuba

09.01.2022 Dwarf Minke Whales are commonly seen on the Great Barrier Reef between June and July. While they are the smallest of the baleen whales, they still get up to 8 meters in length. This Dwarf Minke Whales was photographed on Ribbon Reef # 10. There were about 10 individuals interacting with snorkelers and divers for about 4 hours that day. #justsnorkel #Repost @cairnsdivediva
