21.01.2022 BLOG #1 RESTORATION & MAINTENANCE OF TIMBER CLAD HOMES Is your home clad in timber weatherboards, or does it have the old original timber features Over the last couple of months I have had a lot of inquires about repairs to timber clad homes. ... The Bayside area is covered in old period style homes, some in better nic than others. Replacing rotten cladding and repairing decorative fret works might not be the most glamorous work, but they are an essential part of your home maintenance to ensure an effective building seal, particularly for the colder and damper months to come, or to simply to keep the original period charm and features in tact. Things to consider if your timber home exterior needs repair work Sub floor ventilation & clearance. Is there adequate ventilation under the house to prevent the build up of moisture? Does rainwater drain away from the house or is there enough clearance from ground surfaces to underside of timber structures? Insulation. Is there any? A lot of old homes don't have any wall insulation. Re-cladding is the perfect time to do this. Building seal. Do the external walls need vapour barrier protection? Vapour barriers help with insulation and separation of moisture from external to internal surfaces reducing the likelihood of mold build up. Product selection. What works best? Is timber, fibre cement or vinyl cladding the best option. Durability & longevity vs cost. Personal situation. Long term or short term? Is the house a long term family home or are you intending to flip it and move on.These decisions can impact on your product selections vs cost vs longevity. Surface protection. When was the cladding last painted? If the paint cover has broken down over the years then the effective seal is lost and the boards will begin to draw in moisture speeding deterioration. Home maintenance isn't just about mowing the lawns and raking up the leaves. Regular inspections and maintenance prolong the homes integrity and longevity. Whether it be by keeping the deck oiled, or regularly washing down and painting the exterior of the house, timber homes and features need constant care.

12.01.2022 The story of Glenn... I was born and raised in the South-East suburb of Aspendale, located between Melbournes CBD and the Mornington Peninsula, it was my home until my young adulthood. I grew up in a large family environment, the second eldest of 6 siblings, our family home growing up was full of the typical sibling rivalry, constant nagging, kids sport and mums big family roast dinners.... Like a lot of families, at times growing we had our problems, its fair to say my siblings and I made mum and dads life difficult on the odd occasion. But, through all the rough times we always had a roof over our heads and food on the table, and for this, I will always be grateful. Its not until we get a little bit older, do we truly appreciate the sacrifices our parents make for us. As children we were encouraged to participate in playing sport. In summer I loved playing cricket with my friends and then in winter it was time to pull on the footy boots. Friday nights during the AFL season in the early nineties were usually spent sitting on the loungeroom floor next to my old man watching North Melbourne play and King Carey dominating each game. I remember from a very early age, watching my dad constantly renovating our family home, with each new arrival of a younger sibling, it meant another bedroom or addition was required. It was through these young years, watching my dad swing a hammer that I first remember the joy I got by playing in the backyard and nailing bits of timber offcuts together, trying to imagine building my own little house in the back corner of the yard. On school holidays, and desperate for pocket money, I would go to work with dad. His trade as a plasterer exposed me very early on to building sites. As I got older and moved into High School, I always chose woodwork as one of my elective subjects and continued it through until the completion of year 12, and from here I went into my carpentry apprenticeship. Fast forward some 20 years later, I am still in the construction industry. My dads work ethic has served me well and after completing my apprenticeship I worked my up to lead carpenter, honing my skills on period and architectural projects for other builders. The natural progression was to one day become a registered builder myself, and once I attained that I set myself the challenge to become a business owner. Make no mistake, running a small business has had its ups and downs and has been extremely difficult at times, but I am confident within myself that the journey I am on is going to be a good one, and that my child hood passion for building is still present now and always. Outside of work I have a great bunch of friends, and whilst at this moment I dont have my own young family, I love spending time with their little kids and watching them grow into their parental roles. OhI also like climbing big mountainsbut that can be a story for another day!
