25.01.2022 It will be interesting to see how this new section of fencing works out. Fences like these require a great deal of vigilance to make sure no holes have appeared, or that branches haven't fallen on top of them. Cameras are often used, as well as volunteer patrol groups. The colour of the fencing looks a bit odd, but perhaps this will make it easier to see any damage done to the fence?

24.01.2022 "Low structural complexity of nonnative grassland habitat exposes prey to higher predation" That's the title of an article published a week ago in the journal 'Ecological Society of America' (so we're not alone in facing this issue, Australia!). They found that locusts were twice as likely to be eaten by invasive mammals (in this case, hedgehogs) in exotic pasture than in structurally complex native pasture. (so we don't really know whether the locusts struggled because the ...pasture was exotic or because it was structurally simple.) Why am I citing an article from America? Recently I heard Paul Gibson-Roy's talk about his travels in America, where native wildflowers can be seen along roadsides everywhere. His argument is that we should be doing the same thing here. (If anyone is interested in growing native seed on a large scale, please call him! He knows all about the opportunities and barriers, and suggests that we need a change of legislation to get past them). But what struck me is how much we can learn from countries whose ecology (among other things) is so different from our own. What other lessons can we learn from them and other countries? ~ Ryl Parker

21.01.2022 Join Tyronne Bell to learn some of the rich history and cultural practices of the local Ngunawal people next Monday, 9 Dec. It's $12, held in Womboin. Why not message the Small Farms Network and ask if you can carpool with someone? Carpooling offers a great chance to get to know each other on the drive there and back. ~ Ryl Parker

09.01.2022 Today I attended the annual CURF forum at the University of Canberra. CURF stands for: Canberra Urban and Regional Futures. But what does that mean, exactly? Well, the forum focused on discussing two questions: (1) What can be achieved through successful community engagement and (2) How do we do it? One of the issues that came up is that our style of seeking community engagement tends to attract people with an agenda or a negative view of the thing being discussed. Iain Walke...r (Executive director of the newDemocracy Foundation), argues that we should be randomly selecting the people targetted for community engagement. Next, we need to give these people time to actually learn about the thing in question before they make a decision on it. For example, participants were asked to give up their Saturdays for five consecutive weeks in order to learn, discuss and deliberate on a given topic. These people agreed to do so because they knew that, at the end of those five weeks, they would be able to return to their normal lives without fear of being asked to do further volunteer work for that particular organisation. There were other reasons, too, but that was the one that most struck me. Too often volunteer groups (K2C included) are tempted into asking too much of their volunteers. Although we don't explicitly ask for help at K2C, there's all sorts of other ways that we could be unconsciously putting off people. I'll have a think about it. Keep an eye out for the next CURF forum and subsequent report here: http://www.curf.com.au/ You can also check out their tweets, research, and other ways to get involved. I look forward to seeing you at the next CURF forum next year. It's free and includes great food, talks, and people. We need more people from the greater region attending. ~ Ryl Parker

07.01.2022 Well this is interesting...

06.01.2022 Hollow using animals need living trees, to provide vegetative shelter and for food, including blossoms, seeds, leaves, and the many species of insects they supp...ort. This short article explains how to identify a tree in distress, and ways to prevent trees from dying during times of drought. This could be of value for people living in both urban and rural locations. Enjoy!

04.01.2022 Even better, why not try encouraging pollinators into your garden using our threatened grassland species? That's certainly one way to have an unusual and interesting garden! ~ Ryl Parker
