17.01.2022 EXMOUTHS ICONIC AND MUCH-LOVED CRUSTACEAN IS BACK Exmouths BIG Prawn is back following a much-needed makeover and it is now the shiniest cooked Western King P...rawn in the Southern Hemisphere! Made from fibreglass laid over a steel core the piece stands at seven metres in height and weighs impressive 2000kg, which makes it just two metres shy of its quirky cousin in New South Wales! Initially commissioned by MG Kailis, the piece moved from the MG Kailis Gulf Fisheries at Learmonth to its current Murat Road address in 2014, after the Kailis family donated the local icon to the Shire of Exmouth. Keeping it local the much-needed makeover was contracted to Exmouth Smash Repairs, where resident artist Georgia Raymond-Vine re-created the iconic colouring in a nine-hours-non-stop spray paint makeover.

10.01.2022 Congratulations to all our team who have worked so hard to maintain such high standards for us to achieve this recognition once again. #exmouthwildprawns Western Australian Fishing Industry Western Australia’s reputation for producing the world’s best seafood has been highlighted with the Exmouth Gulf and Shark Bay Prawn Fisheries again achieving the highest possible global standard for sustainability after being recertified to Marine Stewardship Council (MSC) Standards.... Both fisheries were first certified under the MSC Standard in 2015 when the Exmouth Gulf and Shark Bay Prawn Fisheries first attained MSC certification, demonstrating their commitment to best practice in the seafood industry. They have both been re-certified under the more rigorous MSC Version 2.01 standards, which were introduced in 2018. Achievement at this level has been made possible through the determination of the skippers, crew, fishing companies and researchers along with the support of WAFIC and the WA Government. See more

08.01.2022 Know your Aussie prawns: the Exmouth Gulf fleet catches brown tiger prawns, western king prawns, and blue endeavour prawns in the Indian Ocean off the coast of ...the Gascoyne region of Western Australia. Through improvements to habitat mapping in Exmouth Gulf, the fleet has been able to focus its fishing efforts on sandy seabeds and avoid coral reefs, helping to minimise its impact on the marine environment. Exmouth Gulf prawns have been assessed against the MSC Fisheries Standard, and have carried the blue fish tick for sustainability since 2015. : Exmouth Wild Prawns

01.01.2022 PRESS RELEASE: SUSTAINABILITY WIN FOR EXMOUTH GULF The Exmouth Gulf Prawn Fishery’s reputation for sustainability has been enhanced by certification to the highest global standard, that set by the Marine Stewardship Council (MSC). The MSC is the world’s leading science based standard for fisheries sustainability. Exmouth Gulf, along with the Shark Bay fishery, are the first Australian Prawn fisheries to be certified to the MSC’s rigorous Version 2.01 standard (introduced in ...2018). Only four tropical Prawn fisheries worldwide are now certified under Version 2.01. Western Australians can continue to enjoy Exmouth prawns, knowing that they can be confident about its management and environmental performance. The MG Kailis Group has been fishing for prawns in Exmouth Gulf since 1963, and it remains owned by the family. The Group continues to demonstrate its long-held commitment to improving the environmental performance of the fishery. In the last five years this has included co-funding, with the State, an environmental survey across Exmouth Gulf. 127 separate sites were surveyed building on earlier research to gain an understanding of habitat types and their distribution across the Gulf. Dr George Kailis, the Chair of the MG Kailis Group, said ‘there are many challenges in maintaining the enviable environmental status of Exmouth Gulf. With major new developments being proposed for Exmouth Gulf, it is more important than ever that the prawn fishery demonstrate its own environmental performance. Good science enables good management that in turn protects the Gulf’s environment.’ Dr Kailis acknowledged that recertification has only been made possible through the commitment of Group employees, skippers and crew and through the work of researchers and managers employed by the State Government. The MG Kailis Group also acknowledged the support by the State Government for environmental certification, especially welcome in this Covid-19 affected year.
