25.01.2022 I love a good story. I distribute Verigrow, a locally-made liquid fertiliser and soil improver made from WA wool. I love what this product represents. 24.01.2022 Marshmallow plants are ready. Marshmallow. Althaea officinalis. 14cm pots, $10.... Native to Europe and Western Asia, this tall perennial was once an old garden favourite, kept for its beautiful flowers and medicinal qualities. In summer, the pale lilac / white flowers travel up the stems, creating a beautiful show and helping to attract beneficial insects into the garden. The flowers and leaves are edible and can be boiled, fried or added to salads. The plant has a long thick tap root that is edible. The root was once used as a medical confection, used for treating coughs and sore throats. French confectioners later mixed rose water and meringue, creating the sugar-based treat known today as marshmallow (without the health benefits). The plant enjoys moist, free draining soil in a full sun position. Visit: www.kalamundaplants.com.au.

24.01.2022 My Journey Through 1000 Gardens. Garden No. 9 - Tim in Kalamunda. Establishing a thriving garden in areas with surface rock can have its challenges. Some might rate the land unusable whilst others think outside the square and see possibilities. One such person with vision and drive is Tim. ... What Tim has achieved is quite wonderful, turning areas of land with surface rock, into areas of bountiful gardens. As I walk up the long driveway, I’m greeted by Tim. He shows me photos of how the garden looked at the rear of the property when he started a couple of years ago. In areas, the ground looked dry and brittle with surface rock everywhere. Digging into the ground would have proven very difficult, if not impossible, so Tim decided to raise the ground level up. Tim used heaps of discarded rock from a nearby property, to make large retaining walls which he filled with soil. The result is a big tiered area which is now planted with loads of native trees and fruit trees, all of which appear to be loving the fertile soil of the big 'raised garden beds'. In one area, the ground has been raised about 2m in height, allowing a handy turning area to be created for vehicles. As we wander around the garden, I see a fabulous mulberry tree that creates a wonderful space for grandchildren to enjoy. Even I can’t resist sticking my head inside to have a look. What a magical little wonderland. There’s a really nice variety of fruit trees, planted near loads of different Australian natives. Bees and butterflies are everywhere and everything just seems to be doing its thing beautifully. The garden has a really nice vibe. Scattered throughout different areas are tulips of all different colours. They sparkle like little gems and their bright colours pop all over the place. The more I learn about Tim, the more I realise just what an interesting individual he is. A retired geologist, Tim has many varied interests, from making stained glass creations through to managing race cars. He shows me around his workshop and the race car raised high above us is an instant point of discussion. I’m fascinated and totally chuffed. Tim’s workshop, set at the rear of the property, is a great spot for him work whilst looking out over the garden. Tim’s garden is a sanctuary and such a lovely place. The way he’s transformed what most would have deemed unusable land, is rather impressive indeed and this just goes to show how resourceful he is. Tim is a lovely bloke and it was such a treat spending some time with him and exploring his garden. Thanks for sharing Tim.
