24.01.2022 PLEASE DISPOSE OF YOUR EXPIRED SAFETY GEAR IN THE CORRECT WAY. Its been very quiet at Kalbarri Marine Rescue having shut down the log on practice during the COVID -19 dramas but we did have an incident recently. Early in the morning with a particularly nasty ocean we recieved a call from Australian Search and Rescue in Canberra saying that an eperb had been activated in our area. If it was a genuin emergency there was every chance that some boaties were in trouble with the se...as as they were. After quite a bit of running around by the Police and Marine Rescue volunteers at 1.30 am it was determinded that it was a false alarm. The activated eperb was found at the rubbish tip the next morning. If you need to dispose of expired eperbs or flares please do it in the way recomended by the manufacturers or at least bring them to Kalbarri Marine Rescue where they will be disposed of in the correct manner. With the State restrictions starting to be relaxed hopefully we will be able to return to our normal operations soon. Be reassured that we have always been listening on the radios and the boat crew have been available for genuine emergencies. We will be restarting crew training soon and we are always looking for new members to crew the rescue boat and for operating the radios so give us a call if you're interested in getting involved. Call Comander Barry on 0428265500 or Training Officer Ric on 0448999059.

24.01.2022 Kalbarri Marine Rescue would like to welcome the boating visitors to the town for the school holidays. If you’re going out on the water please use our services and log on with us on VHF channel 80. And don’t forget to log off when you’re back through the river mouth, or radio in and extend you journey estimated return time so we don’t have to come looking for you. The Spirit of Kalbarri is back on the air berth to improve our response time during the busier holiday period. Happy and safe boating.

22.01.2022 Dangerous surf conditions created an incident where two surfers had to be rescued from the ocean near Jakes Point recently. Having both lost their boards the surfers were swept along the coast and were unable to get to shore with the heavy swell crashing on on the reef. Visitors to Kalbarri saw the pair and raised the alarm by contacting Kalbarri Marine Rescue. They also directed the surfers to swim away from the waves to a safe place to be picked up. With the assistance of locals Jesse Carter and Terry Ash the Marine Rescue brought the pair through the river mouth. Great result but a reminder to visiting surfers that conditions at the Point should not be taken lightly. This is the second incident recently as another surfer was close to needing assistance. Thanks to all involved.

22.01.2022 A blast from the past.

21.01.2022 Thinking you would like a new challenge? Have some spare time on your hands? Why not become a Radio Operator with Kalbarri VMR? Full training provided. If you think you have what it takes call Barry on 0428265500 or message back and we'll talk you through what's involved.

20.01.2022 A fashion statement or a shrewd publicity stunt? (The vessel not Commander Barry). Whatever the motif the Tom Reed is definitely very visible whether on land or on the water. The vessel belongs to VMRWA and is calling Kalbarri home for the next few months while the Spirit of Kalbarri is in Dongara for a refit. Safe boating to all the visitors to Kalbarri for the school holidays. You may see us out in the ocean, hopefully only on training drills.

18.01.2022 From a few months back.

10.01.2022 RECENT VMR INCIDENTS. The VMR has been involved in a few incidents recently. On Wednesday a young lady dislocated her knee cap while boating on the river and was in a fair bit of discomfort on the western shore. Kat from Kalbarri Boat Hire was quick to raise the alarm and contacted the VMR. It was decided the best way to transport the young lady was on a stretcher on one of the Boat Hire vessels. Thanks to the assistance of some visitors, who happened to be Surf Life Saving m...embers, St John Ambulance volunteers, local people and VMR members the patient was carefully transported to the awaiting ambulance at the boat ramp and taken to the Medical Centre. Well done Kat and all those involved. The VMR rescue vessel, Spirit of Kalbarri, has been deployed twice in the last month to tow in recreational fishing vessels with engine and steering troubles. Both were smooth operations. Well done crews. If you think you would like to be involved with our group call the VMR on 99372112 or drop in to the radio room at the boat ramp and see what goes on.

07.01.2022 Spirit of Kalbarri crew getting experience in what to expect in the event of having to perfom a patient transfer to a helicopter. A daunting experience having a helicopter hovering a couple of metres above our heads while under way.

06.01.2022 The Bones of Kalbarri. (The Spirit in refurbishment).

05.01.2022 Unfortunately like just about every other organisation in Australia, and in many countries of the world for that matter, Kalbarri Marine Rescue has had to suspend its operations, for a period of time, of logging recreational fishers activities around the local Kalbarri waters. This decision was not taken lightly but has also been sanctioned by our "employer", (if you like) the Department of Fire and Emergency Services, However our group will continue to monitor the radio for ...emergency calls only, from home bases, if boaties get into trouble and our Rescue Crews will still be available in these circumstances. This does present a great opportunity for you, as a boatie, to practice safe boating procedures through: 1) Telling your partner, a friend or neightbour exactally where you will be going, how long you intend to be on the water and what to do if you aren't heard from by a specific time. Make sure this person has your mobile number and the number of Kalbarri Marine Rescue (0428265500) for advice on what to do next. And Don't forget to log off with them when you're back on Terra Firma. 2) Make sure all your safety gear is up to date and operational and why not wear your life jacket! 3) Ensure you have sufficient fuel for your journey. These are extreme times so we have had to take extreme measures but your safety, and the safety of our volunteers is still our primary concern so please take extra care on the water. And WASH YOUR HANDS. (Hopefully they stink of fish!) See more

03.01.2022 Do you love being on the ocean? Want to learn new marine skills while helping the boating community and working with others with similar interests? Kalbarri VMR 673 is seeking new members to join our group as Radio Operators or Crew Members. Drop in and have a chat and find out how to get involved.

03.01.2022 Boarder Security Vessel.

01.01.2022 Kalbarri Marine Rescue was called to assist a vessel whose motor had lost power recently. The operation went smoothly and the vessel was towed to the boat ramp. This is a timely reminder to all skippers to ensure your vessel is both seaworthy and in good working order prior to putting to sea. Make sure your radio is working properly and don’t forget to use our services and log in before you head out.

01.01.2022 Kalbarri VMR has a new shed to house our rescue vessel during the quieter months. This protects the Niaid (rescue vessel) from the elements and gives the crew a chance to do some proper maintenance. Our first training launch starting from the shed was a respectable 10 minutes which we can also improve on. The shed is now part of the Kalbarri Emergency Services site in Magee Cresent and joins the SES and the Firies.
