25.01.2022 This year is our 90th anniversary, with the school officially opening in 1930. With Covid we have not been able to celebrate this the way we wanted to. So we are instead taking this opportunity to recognise and acknowledge some of the wonderful staff and community that has provided such great service to Kallangur SS over its proud history. We have already had the Joyce Coling pool and we will have some more great people we will recognise over the rest of this year. Watch this space!

23.01.2022 Tuckshop Reminder Please check your child’s class is correct when ordering on QKR. We have had a number of orders come through with much younger grades on them when they actually in Grade 5 or 6. Unfortunately we don’t have the time to check every child’s class is correct. Please also ensure that your child knows that you have ordered them lunch, especially those in Grades 3-6 as they are required to come and collect their own food. Thank you!

23.01.2022 Work has started again on our Special Education area upgrade. This will hopefully all be finished by the end of the year. It will give us a wonderful space for the SEP and Supported Play programs. We also have a start up meeting next week for our Hall extension. I hope to see work starting there by the end of the month and we have a proposed finished date of the end of term 1 next year.

22.01.2022 To continue our 90th celebrations I am pleased to announce that we will name our administration block the ‘Ted Coogan Administration Block’. Over the Christmas holiday break our admin will be undergoing some extensions and we hope to have it open and ready for the beginning of the 2021 school year. We will then formally name it in honour of Ted. Ted Coogan was Kallangur State School’s longest serving Principal, from 1983-1995. During his tenure Kallangur was at times the largest primary school in Queensland with over 1100 students. Ted leaves a legacy of always putting students first, supporting staff and valuing the community.

22.01.2022 Just a Reminder that tomorrow - Friday 4th September is a Student Free Day. Please ensure that you do not send your children to school. Thank you and have a great long weekend.

22.01.2022 Our memorial garden for Mrs Globke is fast taking shape. Today each of the prep students from her classes planted a variety of ground covers beneath the large Fig tree. Our school leaders helped each preppie dig the hole and place their plant. The concrete path, screen, irrigation system and pots are in. The roses have been planted (Mrs Globkes favourites) and the memorial stone will soon be concreted in place. We have a bit more painting to do and it should be officially opened next term. Mr Bull, our groundsman, has done an amazing job getting it together so quickly.

19.01.2022 In May this year, Kallangur State School was awarded a CARE Grant from the Stockland Newport Residential Community. The funds were used to purchase a wobble stool, 2 ergonomic student chairs, writing slopes, wrist weights, balance boards and twist and write pencils. With access to adaptable learning environments and specialised tools, students are more focused, engaged, less distracted, and more productive. This equipment enables us to reduce or remove barriers to learning so that students have the best opportunity to maximise their educational outcomes. Thank you Stockland for supporting our amazing students!

18.01.2022 This week is Queensland Mental Health Week (QMHW). QMHW encourages all of us to think about our mental health and wellbeing, regardless of whether we may have a lived experience of mental illness or not. The week also gives us the opportunity to understand the importance of mental health in our everyday lives and encourages help seeking behaviours when needed. This year’s theme is 'Take time for mental health'.... 'Take time' is about the simple yet proven things everyone can do to boost mental wellbeing! It is also about breaking down the stigma associated with mental illness and reaching out to people in our community who need support. As always, we are here to support our school community and should you need any, please reach out to your child's teacher, administration or myself. We strongly believe it takes a village to raise a child, and we are all part of the village. Take care and be sure to take time for your mental health this week. 18.01.2022 P-2 Christmas Concert Dear Parents/Carers, as part of meeting EQ COVID-19 requirements we are having a very special Christmas Concert this year. At this time students are not allowed to sing together without socially distancing. So we are going to have a 'Milli-Vanilli' live streamed concert. For those that are not familiar with Milli-Vanilli, they were a pop duo of the 80's and 90's that were caught lip-syncing all their songs. Our students will be lip-syncing their songs that were previously recorded in music lessons (socially distanced). We will be live streaming the event and invitations to the live-stream will be sent out closer to the day. I like to think that our students are all Popstars and will rock the stage in lip-sync style. Thank you for your understanding Regards Admin

16.01.2022 AEDC - Australian Early Development Census - Prep Only Along with most schools around the country, our school has been asked to participate in the fifth Australian Early Development Census the #AEDC2021. The #AEDC helps keep our kids on-track by measuring their development in pre-primary. Find out how the AEDC can benefit your children’s future and your community: www.aedc.gov.au/schools/school-stories... We’re training our Prep teachers to complete the upcoming 2021 Australian Early Development Census for children in their classes, which will start in May this year. The #AEDC results help to identify the things that are influencing early childhood development and create positive change. Find out how communities are using the AEDC results to make positive change: www.aedc.gov.au/communities/community-stories Evidence tells us that a person’s life successes, health and emotional wellbeing build their roots in early childhood experiences. Early experiences can even influence the development of the brain itself. That’s why it’s so important that we keep an eye on how children are progressing, so we can provide the best services and support to families as children grow. www.aedc.gov.au//the-importance-of-early-childhood-develop Every school with children in their first year of full-time school has a vital role to play in helping our nation collect the information it needs to support our children and their families as we recover from the challenges of the COVID-19 pandemic: www.aedc.gov.au/schools/school-stories

16.01.2022 iPad Classes 2021 The online registration link will be posted to Class Dojo on Friday (4/09). This form will become active on Monday (7/09) at 6am. If you do not have access to the internet to fill out the form, please make contact with the office as there are paper copies available. KSS Teacher Comments... iPads allow my students to easily take on roles and follow where their imagination leads. They can be scientists, movie makers, graphic artists, and publishers. The obvious pleasure and pride they take in their work is extremely rewarding. Graeme Clark, Year 3 Teacher "I use iPads in our Prep class to engage and challenge students who have a wide and varied ability range. Learning apps that give students instant feedback are valuable for learning. Sharing students work with parents at home is amazing as it allows teachers and parents to work as partners, sharing successes or further developing students in areas needed." Linda Ferris, Prep Teacher

16.01.2022 To continue our 90th celebrations we will be renaming E Block (The two story block near Storey RD) the McGill/Nugent Block. Annette and Linda both started work at Kallangur SS in the late 80’s. Today they are both still teaching here. In the 90’s they worked together sharing a class and they are working together again this year. Both ladies are dedicated and caring teachers who have influenced the lives of close to 1000 children each in our community. They have always been close friends and have worked closely together over the years. What a great effort!

15.01.2022 Congratulations to Ben The winners of the annual Hon Peter Dutton MP Christmas Card competition have been announced. Congratulations to one of our students who won 3rd Place for Grade 2. This is a fantastic achievement considering the number of Primary schools in the electorate. Ben won a framed picture of his artwork, his artwork on the Peter Dutton's Christmas cards and a movie voucher for $40. Well Done Ben!

15.01.2022 At Kallangur SS we recognise that students need help in many things. Some need extra help in reading or maths while others need extra help in social and emotional growth. Our Wellbeing team consists of Jill Hobbin (Deputy), Kylie Kelso-Smith (Head of Special Ed), Felicia Hilleary, (Guidance Officer), Paul Campbell (Student Engagement Teacher) and Josh Laack (Chaplain). This team meets weekly to discuss and case manage students that need some extra help and support in their so...cial development. This targeted and individualised support ensures that every student that needs the help, gets the help they need. Mr Campbell has a group that is working on social skills but as part of a gardening project. It is wonderful see these skills being immersed into learning in a targeted way. When students can learn specific skills while they are having fun it is a winner on every level. See more

15.01.2022 As part of our 90th Anniversary we will be highlighting and acknowledging some of our wonderful staff members from the past. To start us off I am honoured to announce that our school library will now be the ‘Barrie Harding Library’. Barrie worked at Kallangur SS for 30 years from 1963 to 1993. He graduated in the first class of Teacher Librarians in 1971 and ran our library for the rest of his career. He was also Vice President of the Kallangur State School P & C Association... from 1965 to 1993. He worked with and influenced every student that came through the school in his capacity as a teacher and teacher librarian. He worked tirelessly in the P and C and his children attended KSS through their primary years. He lived locally (in Kent St I believe) throughout his career. 01.01.2022 Today marks five years since I started as Principal at Kallangur State School. I would like to thank the staff, parents and community for their support during this time. When I started here I had a five-year plan. I spoke about this during my interview for the job. 1. Create positive home-school relationships. Engage the parents and community through open communication platforms so they know what is happening and how they can get involved. 2. Provide clear and consistent ex...pectations around student behaviour that ensures the parents and the school team work together to provide support when required. 3. Value and support our teachers. Give them everything they need to do their job, to ensure success for our students. 4. Engage students. If school is boring they will learn nothing. 5. Ensure our students are 21st century learners by utilising technology to open up new and exciting ways to learn. I believe that with the help of a great staff team and some wonderful community involvement we have hit each mark. We have had significant infrastructure investment in our school over recent years and this has given us a place that we can all be proud of. Our students have had a 20% increase in their academic improvement over the last three years. Our enrolments have grown by 20% and we cannot accept any out of catchment enrolments. While I will not deny that the job is challenging, I am extremely proud to be the Principal of Kallangur State School. I went here as a child, I taught here for 14 years, my wife went here, my children went here. I intend to be here until I retire. Thank you all for your ongoing and valued support. Kind Regards Andrew Swales See more
