Baby Lotti Little Lotti came into care after her mum was hit and killed by a car weighing a mere 37gms which is on the VERY verge of viability. 25.01.2022 New little girl with some very sad eyes :( She has been named Portia by her rescuer, found at just under 6kg all by herself with no mum in sight.... Although at this age they are quite independent, there is no way should would have survived out there by herself. ... Once again we are set with the hard task of consoling a little girl who just wants her mum back. She cries and cries and cries until I pick her and she finally falls asleep. 21.01.2022 Patricia the brushtail possum is currently in our care after suffering a head injury most likely due to a car accident. She presented hypothermic (cold) and hypoglycaemic (low blood sugar). A huge attempt was made to stabilise her, heating in an intensive care unit, fluid therapy via an IV catheter and IV glucose. Luckily the treatment worked and she began to improve. Tucked away in her pouch is also a little roughly 15gm pinkie joey. At this size they are not viable withou...t their mum so we have two lives to look out for here.... Patricia is going well, she’s eating lots of fresh foliage as well as some fruit and veg and her balance has started to improve. 21.01.2022 30 Seconds of complete and utter cuteness.... both boys are relatively new into care, it can be a bit scary the first couple of weeks. They miss their mums, they miss the security of their mums pouch, they miss the constant attention their mum would have been giving them. It can be hard to watch sometimes, they cry for a mum we know is not coming back. Slowly but surely they settle into care, their memories of their mums and what happened fade away and they begin to love you.... I find buddying them up in a bag helps comfort them in the early days and these two sure do seem content and happy together . 20.01.2022 Another kangaroo has been welcomed here at Kangaroo Sanctuary South Australia. This beautiful girl is a almost 10kg Eastern grey kangaroo who was found down a 2 meter hole dug by construction workers. Struggling with dehydration, exhaustion and potential myopathy (Muscle breakdown due to stress) she is in intensive care receiving intravenous fluid therapy and around the clock monitoring. ... It will be a long road a head for this sweet girl but we are giving her every reason to keep going and continue fighting. Liam came into care in quite a horrific state, he had been held onto by a member of the public and arrived severely dehydrated and malnourished as well as having burns to his skin from hot water bottles. ... We love that everybody has such a passion for kangaroos, however it is REALLY important to hand them on as soon as possible to a trained carer to receive appropriate care :) Liam came in a tiny, fragile boy but has actually blossomed into our Alpha male here at the sanctuary. 18.01.2022 Meet our newcomer Bunny boi from Hawker SA. This little man has been raised from a pinkie by a lovely family, unfortunately his tendons in his feet have constricted to the point it is effecting his mobility. He also has an extremely bad case of ringworm which is a fungal skin infection. ... He was surrendered into our care order to receive specialist treatment and have access to veterinary care. He has already had a set of X-rays taken - fortunately there does not appear to be any bone abnormality involvement. His rehabilitation and treatment will be long term, daily physio sessions in order to stretch his tendons and aggressive treatment for his ringworm infection. He’s a happy boy and has settled in very well. 18.01.2022 A new little boy has come into care this week. He has been caught up in a fence following his mum. Unfortunately he had been caught in the fence for up to 2 days in the wet, freezing conditions, how did he survive? His right foot has two significant lacerations down to bone, radiographs have been taken, no fractures thankfully but potentially ligament damage. Although things are looking good so far his veterinary treatment regime will be long term, medications, bandage change...s, vet appointments. 18.01.2022 Huge day of rescues yesterday and I am absolutely, well and truly, knackered.... First we set out on a call in Cockatoo valley for a sub-adult male kangaroo with a floppy foot. Once we got there it was obvious that his foot was completely shattered, after a full assessment was made the decision was made to unfortunately euthanise him due to the extent of his injuries. We then headed back up to a member of the public who had found a joey in a dead kangaroos pouch, touch an...d go for the little one at this stage. Then another call came in for a kangaroo who had just been hit by a car and was lying on the road out at Sandy Creek. Unfortunately she also had sustained terminal injuries and needed to be euthanised immediately. She did have a joey in pouch who had already died on impact.... 14.01.2022 Three weeks on and we are seeing a huge improvement in our fence hanger boy who has finally been named Caelan (Powerful warrior) Caelan had two significant lacerations to his foot, unfortunately all the way down to bone cutting his tendon in the process. Luckily X-rays of his foot showed that he did not break any bones in the process. With veterinary checks at least once a week and bandage changes every 2 days as well as antibiotics twice daily, we are starting to see some r...eal improvements in the healing of his wounds. This is why joeys should always be raised in groups of at least two or more The bond they form with each other is like no other and the comfort they get from having that connection is something I could never give them myself. ... Every night after a bottle and a stretch the joeys are all tucked into their individual hanging beds within an enclosed portacot. Every now and then you will get a very intelligent joey who will break all the rules to get what they are after....... 09.01.2022 ****Graphic Photo****** Just over 1 month ago we received notification of this sweet little boy needing placement after his mum had been hit by a car and needed to be euthanised. Of course we said yes to taking him in and picked him up soon after. ... At 7kg, joeys are almost always out of the pouch and running away from us on a rescue like this. Not this boy, he had such a strong bond with his mum, they stuck by each other until the end. She was a very good mum however her injuries were terminal which left us with no choice. Our little man who remains unnamed (feel free to post suggestions) is going well! He has some very insignificant fractures to his leg and foot but should make a full recovery. 07.01.2022 Meet the mob - Levi (Western grey) Levi came into care back in early 2018 at just 600gms. His mum was hit by a car in Burra and he was transported down to me luckily without any injuries. Levi was a perfect, happy joey until he reached about 3kg and started developing some weird symptoms (lethargy, inappetence, wobbly gait), he immediately received veterinary attention where it was found he was anaemic, he was later diagnosed with theleria with is a protazoa (a micro parasit...e that attacks and destroys red blood cells). Treatment was uneventful to start with until he developed severe gut pain, after another emergency vet trip and a set of X-rays it was found that he had an impaction in his stomach and needed emergency surgery or euthanasia..... of course we chose surgery which went really well thankfully. After many stressful months of ups and downs Levi was finally back to his normal happy healthy self Unfortunately due to the extent of veterinary treatment he needed the cost did clock up... all up we spent just over five thousand dollars.... which was a huge hit to the rescue! We find that joeys that come into care sick or injured and need a high level of intensive care usually become quite sooky and that is certainly the case with this boy. 2 years on and he is LOVING life, he’s happy and healthy and still just as beautiful as ever! 06.01.2022 Again as one of the only wildlife sanctuaries in South Australia with the facilities and experience to handle adult kangaroo rehabilitation, we often find ourselves with some tricky cases. A call came through recently of concern for a kangaroo who had been standing in the corner of a paddock for multiple days without moving for food/water ect. We called Adelaide Hills Kangaroo Rescue who were able to assist, with the help of John, a well experienced kangaroo handler.... He has been transported to our sanctuary where he can be closely monitored and fed some good quality food, in the hopes that he will become strong enough for release. He is extremely aggressive, which is a huge concern for our safety however thankfully he does not require any hands on help from us, so we can keep our distance. Thanks to all involved in his rescue! Yesterday we received a phone call from a fellow wildlife carer Lisa alerting us of a adult euro that had been standing in a Paddock for quite a while and she appeared to be blind. Today we set out on the 4 hour round trip to assess the situation and sure enough, there she was in the exact same spot. ... Weak and disoriented from dehydration and hunger due to her lack of vision, she was not hard to catch. She will receive a full veterinary assessment which will include an eye examination before coming back home to live out the rest of her life safely in the sanctuary. 02.01.2022 Woke up this morning to find our beautiful new girl had made it out of her portacot and into a small window of sunshine in the bathroom. The relief she must feel. Finally out of danger and able to relax! Her strength is gaining.... slowly.... each and every day but as you can see, she’s still completely wrecked. ... 01.01.2022 Last night we received another phone call from Adelaide Hills Kangaroo Rescue to ask us to check on a kangaroo dead on the side of the road. Of course we set off straight away on the nearly 2 hour round trip with the fear that a joey may have been orphaned in the accident. Well our fears were all too real once we pulled up and realised the kangaroo was in fact a female with a very wiggly pouch. ... A tiny man, waiting so patiently to be rescued.
