24.01.2022 Bees with Backpacks Challenge State Final Pitch Success! As part of the Sustaining Our Planet (Level C Science) subject, students completed a four week program called 'Bees with Backpacks'. The program is a joint venture between the CSIRO and Victoria's Tech Schools, and it is the first time that Kardinia International College has been involved. Students completed five modules investigating bees, their importance, the issues surround their declining populations, how science ...is helping generate understanding and solutions of how we can help. The program finished with the team challenge of creating a bee friendly environment, a campaign of how to create awareness of the issues to the wider community and a team reflection on the overall process. The judges at Geelong Tech School were very impressed with our 13 strong entries and two Kardinia teams were deemed winners of the Geelong Region. On Wednesday 8 November our two teams competed in the State Finals where they had to pitch their 'Adopt-a-Bee' and '#saveourbees' campaigns. Our students did an amazing job presenting to the panel of judges and guests, and the two teams were awarded second and third place respectively. Well done to the students involved: Queen Bees Adopt-a-Bee Team - Annabelle Batty, Akaya Bohne, Claire Carboon, Issey Kendall The Queen Bees #saveourbees Team - Emelia Griffiths, Hannah Howe, Claudia Paul and Esther Mathers The program was a great success and we look forward to our continued involvement in 2021.

24.01.2022 This week's Storytime with Mrs Bowman is 'Nop' by Caroline Magerl. 'Nop is a scruffy kind of bear. He sits on a dusty armchair in Oddmint's Dumporeum surrounded by the beaders, knitters, patchers and stitchers who are much too busy to talk to him. So he watches the litter tumble until, armed with a new bow tie, he has an idea that will change his life forever.' If you enjoyed this story, you might like to have a go at painting Nop! Watch the Youtube video below featuring Caroline Magerl painting him using a cup of tea. Please send Mrs Bowman a photo of your painting and you could win your own copy of Nop! Competition closes Wednesday 9th September. Goodluck! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1UpJZuMmqOo

12.01.2022 Well done to the 12 Kardinia International College Year 9-11 students who have been volunteering with The Smith Family throughout remote learning in the student2student peer support program, which helps disadvantaged young readers across Victoria. Lara Skerratt Sam King Mannix Vincenzino... Joshua Hughes Mia Eastman Claudia Tippet Georgia Borschmann Liam Long Caitlin Rea Amelie McConnell Flora Retallack Isabelle Vincenzino Our students are currently completing the Duke of Edinburgh Award, and will receive recognition in the service component. It has been a rewarding experiencing for everyone, with Lara and Isabelle providing the following feedback: ‘The s2s program was a way for me to connect with a student who needed support with their reading. I feel that this program was beneficial for both myself and the student as I was able to learn to be encouraging towards the student, hopefully motivating them to continue to enjoy reading. I was also able to witness the reader progress as they gradually began to read more challenging books.’ Isabelle Vincenzino, Year 11 ‘Being a part of the Student2Student program has been an amazing experience. It took a few calls for my reader to warm up to me, but now I truly look forward to our calls. My reader loves reading, and she often does the character’s voices, adds sound effects and eagerly debates what we think is going to happen next. Especially in lockdown, s2s has been a great way to connect and help out in the community even when we can’t see anyone.’ Lara Skerratt, Year 11 https://www.theage.com.au//reading-buddies-help-bridge-gap Duke of Ed Victoria The Duke of Edinburgh's International Award - Australia

01.01.2022 Today is R U OK Day. This year it’s been even more important for us all to stay connected and, for those who are able, be willing to support those around us. You don’t have to be an expert to keep the conversation going when someone says they’re not OK. By knowing what to say you can help someone feel supported and access appropriate help long before they’re in crisis, which can make a really positive difference to their life. Watch the video below, and check out the Tip Sheet, for some great info to help support others and continue the conversation. #RUOK #RUOKDay https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=erHLP29tzPE&feature=youtu.be
