22.01.2022 So important to be trauma informed in your practice
22.01.2022 Still one of my all-time-favourite discoveries and worth sharing again and again is this booklet on Complex Trauma written especially for young people. I am a b...ig believer in being honest with young people, and that information is power - especially when it comes to self-knowledge and self-understanding. "We developed this Resource Guide for youth who have experienced, or know someone who has experienced, Complex Trauma. Older youth, adolescents, and young adults can explore the information in this guide on their own to help make sense of their experiences and understand themselves better. Clinicians, caregivers, and other adults can use this guide to have conversationssometimes hard, but often freeingwith young adults, teens, pre-teens (and even some curious 7-9 year olds). The youth who asked for the written resource on Complex Trauma said he wished he had better understood what he was going through and why he reacted the way he did. Once he knew what Complex Trauma was, he started to make sense of his thoughts, feelings, and behaviors. He felt relieved and though he still had some hurdles to get overhe felt hopeful." https://www.nctsn.org//what-complex-trauma-resource-guide-

19.01.2022 As a Psychiatrist, it makes no sense to me that an illness affecting our thoughts or emotions should be treated any differently from an illness which affects ou...r breathing or our mobility. A mental illness is not a character flaw. It should not be embarrassing or shameful. An illness is an illness whatever bodily system is affected. But sadly, stigma is a reality for many people with mental health issues and prevents many from accessing necessary and available support. Today is R U Okay day - a reminder to reach out, to ask people how they are and to make these simple but potentially life saving conversations the new normal. And given the year we've all had, it's a timely reminder indeed. #ruokayday See more

17.01.2022 This is a fantastic infographic created by Ruth Culver that combines two of the most exciting ways of working with trauma: Internal Family Systems (IFS) and Pol...yvagal Theory. I love this combo because it helps to make sense of trauma wounds and experiences in multiple ways with a depth and richness that includes both the physiological and somatic, as well as the psychological or 'inner-world'. You can download a PDF of the infographic from https://calmheart.co.uk/resources/ and there are videos and trainings offering a deeper explanation of the spiral too.

13.01.2022 "How do you let go of attachments to things? Don’t even try. It’s impossible. Attachment to things drops away by itself when you no longer seek to find yourself in them." - Eckhart Tolle
13.01.2022 An absolutely true statement in every possible way. In almost every part of the world, the Dragonfly symbolizes change, transformation, adaptability, and self-r...ealization. The change that is often referred to has its source in mental and emotional maturity and understanding the deeper meaning of life. It reinforces we are capable of anything and sometimes we amaze ourselves with hidden strengths.
12.01.2022 Nice to listen to. Really soothing

06.01.2022 I urge people - parents, teachers, whoever - to never attempt to make an autistic child feel bad about what they did during a meltdown. Once they calm down, th...ey are wracked with enough guilt and shame about their conduct as it is - making comments like "do you know what you're putting your mother/father/sibling/friend through?" reduntant and cruel. They are already giving themselves an internal chastisement, and do not require another one. Notwithstanding the preexisting guilt, there is also a great deal of fear and confusion after the meltdown subsides and the autistic child's more "human" essence returns: "Could it really have been I who was the source of this chaos in my wake? Is it I who orchestrated the scene of mass destruction before my very eyes? It doesn't feel like it... it feels like someone else - or someTHING else - more barbaric and more sinister and more merciless than I moved through me and acted on my behalf, and I was powerless to stop it. And now, it is I who bears responsibility for the mess made by my vessel but not made by my soul. Still, I will feel guilt and shame on behalf of the malignant meltdown entity within, who is not capable of such feelings". Guilt tripping them will not help anyone in this situation; it'll only make things worse. Believe me, if the conversations they have with themselves post meltdown could take place OUTside of their head instead of inside their head, no one's anger would be greater and more smouldering than theirs. A meltdown is not a moral failing. It is a state of total physiological, emotional and psychological overwhelm.

05.01.2022 The cutting edge thinking this man has. Blew me away.
05.01.2022 New blog article out today. What I’m saying here is that #trauma is not the event. It’s the impact or the result of the event. It’s a stuck autonomic nervous system, stuck in a defensive state of flight/fight, shutdown or freeze.
04.01.2022 Love how they address the misconceptions. I also consider co-regulation as an important factor
03.01.2022 Children learn what they live. So what do children who live with spanking learn? I know that parents and carers who spank their children do so because they hop...e/believe that their children will learn limits, respect, good behaviour, and right from wrong. But that is a form of "do what I say not what I do". When we spank children we model a toxic way of managing problems/thoughts/feelings. We model that might is right. We model causing others pain to make them do what we want.

01.01.2022 Important to remember with regard to the NDIS. Participants need to push back. Psychologists cannot put claims for psychosocial disability on Medicare. Print this and take to planning.... Edit :This is a clear statement from the psychology body that NDIA are wrong to tell you to use Medicare for ongoing disability. Send a complaint [email protected] and to the ombudsman if you have been told to do this.
