25.01.2022 We've discussed the red flags indicating your child may have dyslexia, now what? How can us as speech pathologists help you? With extensive knowledge about phonological skills, a speech therapist can deliver phonological awareness tasks to develop the reading, writing, spelling, and comprehension skills.... Children need to be assessed as to where their spelling knowledge is currently at, so that a program can be developed that targets their specific need. After that, a Speech Pathologist will teach children how to perform the followings: to hear, recognise and write the different sounds to read, spell, write the different ways to spell words containing the same sound to decode (breaking words apart) to blend (putting sounds together) Speak with us today to see how we can help your child with a tailored program!

25.01.2022 Developing your child's vocabulary doesn't have to be hard work! Here are a few tricks you can try out with your child at home this school holiday: Read daily to your child pointing to different objects on the page, using lots of expression, asking questions; encourage them to make the noises of different characters (e.g. point to the train and ask what sound does the train make? choo choo; what does the cat say? meow). Take your child grocery shopping have the...m count with you the number of apples / tomatoes you are putting in the bag, name the foods as you select them, show them the cans / have then help you lift the cans (corn / beetroot) into the trolley. Have them help you hang out the washing ask them to pass different items of clothing, ask them for a number of pegs (e.g. pass me two red pegs). Sing nursery rhymes. Phone Perth Speech Pathology today (0429 954 646) to learn more about how we can help your child to succeed!

24.01.2022 While signs of dyslexia may be noticed as early as kindergarten, you may notice more of them as the child grows up. For example, they may not know which letter that says the sound s Quickly learning the order of sounds in words Remembering the sounds that each letter makes, or retaining the visual representation of sounds Saying the sounds in simple words and blending them together to make a word. For example, sounding out r-a-t, then identifying it as the word "rat" A person with dyslexia may also demonstrate the following behaviours: Sounding out slowly Inaccurate reading If you think your child may have Dyslexia, talk to us!

20.01.2022 How well should your child be in their speech? Here are the regular milestones for young children aged 2-4. At age 2, the child should be understood by a familiar listener (such as their parents or close family members) most of the time. They should also develop 2000 to 5000 words in their vocabulary by 2.5 years old. At age 3, the child should be understood by both family and those who aren't familiar with their way of speaking (such as family friends) about 70-100% of the ...time. They should also have over 5000 words in their vocabulary. At age 4, the child should be able to clearly communicate a message 100% of the time. Do you think your child is not talking clearly? Contact us and our group of professionally-trained speech pathologists will see how we can help!

17.01.2022 Perth Speech Therapy held its first teacher get together to discuss what is best practice when it comes to delivering phonics and reading. We discussed: 1. The importance of delivering P.A. skills daily - suggested program was Heggerty. 2. How best to deliver a phonics program - suggested program was "Sounds Write". 3. Finding out where the child is at with their sound knowledge through using the free on line assessments - MOTIF 3. The importance of repeatedly sounding out ...and blending sounds until children are proficient. 4. What to do when a child can segment words BUT is unable to blend sounds to make a word. 5. What free assessments are there that can be used to assess children's sound knowledge - UK phonics check We ended the session discussing the importance of not destroying children's self-esteem. Every child has positive attributes that need to be focussed on whilst helping them with their weaknesses. This highlighted to me how much the group of women that came today in their holidays really care about the kids they teach and their desire to make a difference in their children's lives. If you feel Perth Speech Therapy can be of assistance feel free to message Jenny Edgar.

16.01.2022 If your child stutters, how can you help them at home? Providing longer pauses between conversational turns. Give your child sufficient time to speak so they don't feel hurried. Be focussed and acknowledge what they are saying to ensure that they know they have been heard.... Slow down your own rate of speech. Modelling an unhurried manner of speaking models to the child how to slow down when they are speaking. Reduce the number of questions you ask in succession. Try to reduce the number of questions that you ask. Focus on asking yes/no questions or questions that only require several word answers (e.g. which animal do you think will trick the elephant?) Follow the childs lead in play Following your child's lead reduce the amount of verbal instructions and questioning during play. When playing with your child, always show that you are engaged, and make eye contact to reduce any potential frustration. Decrease length and complexity of language Children often copy the sentence structure, grammar and vocabulary used by their parents. Therefore, try using simple sentences when communicating with your child. This can create a less demanding speaking environment for your child.

16.01.2022 What should you do to help your child with their spelling and reading at home? Let's take a look at what the suggestions are for those in PRE-PRIMARY! They should be exposed to and actively involved in activities such as: Learning Phonological Awareness skills and Phonics (sounds ONLY when learning the initial code)... Learning how to decode and blend sounds to make words Reading with Decodable Readers The following activities may not be suited for their age: Read with predictable texts (this teaches the children to guess words rather than sound them out) Learn the letter names until proficient in sounds letters make and can write the sounds fluently Guess words by looking at pictures (this is an ineffective way to teach them how to spell or read!) Be given sight words (words that are commonly used). Every word should be sounded out!

15.01.2022 How can you help your child to improve their reading and spelling at home? This week, we will be talking about what should and shouldn't be taught to children at different age! Hearing fairy-tales and joining in the chants However, they should avoid these activities: Decoding and reading with readers (as they do not yet understand the alphabet code and how sounds work) Learning sight words, which are words that we commonly see and use in our daily life

14.01.2022 How can I help my child to speak clearly? Children are not expected to speak clearly from an early age. It is only until after age 4 that they should be understood 100% of the time. However, if you want to improve their speech, try using these tricks at home! Make eye contact with them Always show interest when they are trying to communicate Repeat the sounds / words that are unclear so they can hear the correct production of words / sounds... 07.01.2022 This applies to spelling and reading. Kids that are taught the sounds letters make and who are actively involved in the manipulation of sounds / segmenting and blending sounds they have been taught to make words will be more proficient at spelling and reading as they advance through the school grades. This is evidence based and the science behind reading! How does your school teach spelling and reading? Are they taught the sounds of the alphabet and how they work together to... make words? OR are they told to guess what the word could be, look at the picture and guess or read around the word and have a guess ? Guessing and reading sight words is NOT learning to spell and read.

03.01.2022 A simple spelling rule to teach your child: /ED/ SPELLING RULE This spelling comes at the end of past tense doing words (verbs). The spelling /ed/ makes three sounds. They being:... /d/ as in grabbed /id/ as in skidded /t/ as in stripped Step 1: Have the child read the word and identify the final sound as t, d or id. They then glue the word under the sound that they can hear at the end of the word. Step 2: Next, the teaching of the spelling rule: Jump jumped; thump thumped; cramp cramped Now ask them to spell skip skipped. This is where they will probably write skipt or skiped. It is here you stop and go back to the word jump and show them that there are 2 consonants after the u in jump and so you add ed. Show them the word skip. To spell the word skipped you must double the consonant before adding ed. Then demonstrate writing skipped without doubling the p and explain that if there are not 2 consonants between the vowels the e can jump over the consonant and change the short vowel to a long vowel. That is skip skiped. Now you need to stop and explain what short and long vowels are (a e i o u) Next explain what a consonant is (e.g. t, f, g, h, m,..) Now practice examples of words where you need to double the consonant and where you do not need to. Each time have the child point to the short vowel ask how many consonants come after the vowel do you need to double the consonant or just add ed? Drag dragged trip tripped tip tipped hop hopped Milk milked cramp cramped bump bumped Do NOT do words that are the exception until this spelling rule is well embedded (e.g. live lived). There are always exceptions to the rule. SUGGESTED WORDS trapped jumped grabbed sniffed yelped rested slammed sobbed rested tripped licked snacked mended dragged licked fizzed tipped patted hissed slipped landed spilled checked hunted
