21.01.2022 There is an assumption that if purchasers do not obtain finance approval by the due date, then the contract is automatically at an end and that their deposit will be returned. However, it is not this simple and there are risks involved. The subject to finance clause includes a general condition which specifies that the purchaser will use its best endeavours to apply for and do everything necessary to obtain the loan. If this term is not satisfied by the finance approval due date, the contract may still become unconditional. You must also be aware of special conditions in your contract which can alter the general position.

21.01.2022 Dont make these mistakes please! See a tax agent/lawyer if unsure! "A couple of taxpayers claimed dental expenses, believing a nice smile was essential to finding a job - and was therefore deductible. It isnt and their claims were disallowed." "Another taxpayer claimed the Lego sets they bought as gifts for their children. Unsurprisingly, this claim was disallowed. Personal gifts dont qualify, and its not okay to ask Australian taxpayers to subsidise presents."

19.01.2022 Cryptocurrency operates in a virtual world, and once the scammers receive payment, its virtually impossible to get it back. Scammers are constantly adapting their methods to maximise their chances of picking your pocket. Unfortunately it was inevitable that scammers would target cryptocurrency given its current popularity and anonymity.

16.01.2022 A warning for those using dodgy agents. Unfortunately the buck (and penalties!) stops with the taxpayer. Always ensure claims are substantiated and use a reputable agent.

16.01.2022 "...every purchase you make online from large organisations, whether it be from ASOS or from a large eBay seller situated in the U.S. or Asia, youll be paying an additional 10% of the purchase price"

14.01.2022 Its that time of the year again!

14.01.2022 Estate planning can often be a confronting topic to discuss. However, many undervalue the importance of doing so and having a valid up to date will. Besides the fact that it would lighten the burden on your family during a time of mourning the importance includes: Allowing you to choose your preferred executor who is responsible in finalising any debts or liabilities and then distributing the remainder of your estate to your beneficiaries; Gives the executor clear understandi...ng on how to carry out your affairs, as you would have wanted; Appointing your preferred beneficiaries who you intend to have a portion of your estate; Allows you to appoint a guardian for any minor children, allowing you input on who you believe would be best suited; May help minimise tax on income from the estate; Ensures your estate is settled quickly without problems; and Helps avoid unnecessary claims made against your estate.

13.01.2022 "You should always take into account asset protection and tax benefits, and the ideal structure for your property will largely depend your individual circumstances."

06.01.2022 One of our most frequently asked questions since the Budget! It has now passed through the Senate. Contact us if you have any questions about how this may affect your business.

05.01.2022 Please be mindful of your claims and if in doubt, seek advice! See below quotes from the assistant commissioner: If we know someone is deliberately doing the wrong thing, not only will they have to repay tax but there will also be interest on it and there can be penalties of up to 75 per cent of the missing part of the tax they should have paid in the first instance, she said.... Further than that, there can be criminal prosecution for people caught fraudulently developing their own supporting documents and things like that. We know nobody likes to get a bill from the tax man, especially not well after they have already spent their refund, so its best to do the right thing upfront.

05.01.2022 There are multiple ways in which you can structure your property purchase. Each structure has pros and cons but each should be considered when purchasing a new investment property and sometimes for the primary residence. Many of the advantages are not immediately apparent due to the long-term nature of property holdings. Given the significant tax and stamp duty costs of restructuring, you want to make sure you get it right to begin with.

02.01.2022 Good luck to all finalists - we look forward to seeing you at next weeks conference and dinner!

01.01.2022 Have you lodged your return yet? Taxpayers who use a tax agent can often lodge well beyond the 31 October deadline without penalty. The ATO gives tax agents concessional extended deadlines which mean that they can lodge returns on behalf of clients up to 15 May 2018 without incurring any penalty.
