11.01.2022 Happy World Dolphin Day! Today we are profiling the snubfin dolphin - an elusive and shy species that was identified in 2005! Some facts about Snubfin Dolp...hins! Found only in the waters of northern Australia and Papua New Guinea, Not show-offs like other dolphins, snubbies deep dive if startled Typically grow to 2.5m and up to 130kg Shy and elusive they live in shallow waters less than 20m deep, and close to river estuaries Unlike most dolphins have a rounded head and small snublike dorsal fin Live for up to 30 years, but are slow to mature with females not giving birth until they are 10 years old. They only have 1 calf every 2-3 years meaning populations recover very slowly. Feed on fish, crustaceans and cephalopods Live in small isolated populations, where the loss of even 1 individual can cause long term population decline. Snubfin numbers are estimated to be in the thousands, but sadly this is declining. One of the main threats to snubfin dolphins is gillnet fishing. Gillnets are indiscriminate killers. Snubfin dolphins are easily entangled in commercial fishing nets, where they can quickly drown. Living close to river estuaries, their habitat overlaps with areas commonly fished for species like barramundi and threadfins. Snubfins are also caught in shark nets as part of the QLD shark control program. Want to help the snubfin dolphin? We must 1 Get cameras on fishing boats 2 Buyout gillnet licenses to reduce the number of nets in the water 3 Set regional limits on bycatch, with areas closed to fishing if breached Stay tuned - we will have more this month.

06.01.2022 At Kasu, we believe that all of us have a part to play in helping our environment and creating a better world. Last week we learnt the truth about some of our biggest seafood suppliers in the world and now more than ever want to help our community to stop supporting huge suppliers who produce most of our waste in this world. Thank you @seaspiracy for opening our eyes.... By borrowing your items to someone in need, you reduce the production waste associated with them purchasing something for themselves. And that creates a sustainable and friendlier environment for all of us. How are you living more sustainable? #kasutribe
