18.01.2022 Fish oil, it's a topic that has seen many a contentious debate. With all of the misinformation swimming out there sometimes it's difficult to make heads or tails of it all. Don't believe everything you read. When studies are used by the media they are often taken out of context or extrapolated to mean something else entirely. Case in point, "The False Promise of Fish Oil Supplements", an article published by Scientific American failed to disclose Dr. Mason's conflict of int...erest (meaning he has previously been involved in studies which were paid for by a pharmaceutical company that produces a synthetic alternative to fish oil). In addition to this, in Dr. Mason's argument against fish oil he references studies that used synthetic alternatives NOT fish oil. So, yep.. I'm as confused as you are . A meta-analysis published on the 30th of September of this year showed fish oils to significantly reduce the risk of coronary heart disease, cardiovascular disease and heart attack. Link Below https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/31567003 ----------------------------------------------------------- So how do you choose a good fish oil? 1. Firstly, quality matters. Purification (a process by which contaminants such as pesticides, solvents, plasticisers etc. are removed) and freshness (this includes limited exposure to heat, light, oxygen to avoid oxidation and rancidity) are so, and I cannot stress this enough, important. 2. Dose is also an important consideration. Fish oils show significant anti-inflammatory effect at a dose upwards of 2.7 grams of EPA/DHA. NB: that's not 2.7g of fish oil (look at the equivalent EPA/DHA on your fish oil). 3. Lastly, but certainly not least, is the ecological impact. Choose a company that has a certification like 'Friends of the Sea'. If you're vegan there are algae based fish oils on the market (in fact fish actually acquire their omega-3s from algae).

04.01.2022 Corticosteroid injections are far too common and given far too liberally for joint pain. A recent study auditing 459 injections showed that 6% of those receiving the injection developed rapidly progressive osteoarthritis. In short, the use of injections worsened the disease prognosis. Corticosteroid injections should only be given as a last resort and after an MRI of the joint is performed.

02.01.2022 The etymology of the word ‘iris‘ stems from the Greek word meaning ’rainbow’. Iridology, a branch of natural medicine, looks to the iris for manifestations of systemic disease, a reflection of the entire body. Through practising iridology it's easy to anecdotally profess its validity, BUT anecdotal isn't enough. A study by Hussein et al. looked to verify iridology for its use in diagnosing stage 4-5 renal failure. They found that iris markings correlated with renal insufficiency 82% of the time with a false positive of 6%. 01.01.2022 Sunday’s were made for breakfast in bed. Today I made a broccoli and tomato egg scramble with Pure Life’s Gluten Free 6 Seed Organic Sprouted Bread. I’m making a conscious effort to up my fibre content after hearing an incredible story at the Metagenics MetaBiome Masters. During the process of collecting and collating their sample population they came across a particular sample that had the highest microbiome diversity they’d ever seen. Astounded, they quickly asked the woman... whose sample it was what exactly she was eating. It turns out that as a young woman she had suffered from constipation and her wonderful doctor, instead of prescribing laxatives, told her that she needed to up her fibre content. Since then, the woman made a point of eating as much fibre as she could (she’s now 70 years old). A dietary analysis revealed that she is consuming 50g of fibre per day (the recommended daily intake for a female is 28g). Aside from increasing microbiome diversity (which in itself has far reaching effects like improving gut barrier function, bowel regularity and immunity) fibre also: -Reduces your risk of colon cancer (by increasing production of SCFA’s such as butyrate) -Improves liver detoxification of hormonal metabolites (particularly important in oestrogen sensitive conditions, if this is you increase your consumption of cruciferous veggies like broccoli, cauliflower and Brussels sprouts. Just make sure they’re cooked!) -Promotes satiety and fullness (so you’re not tempted by that chocolate slice) My breakfast consists of about 10g of fibre so needless to say I’ve got a little bit to go .

01.01.2022 It's been a busy couple of weeks. Coupled with having a holiday (getting married) and clinic as usual, I received the latest edition of The Natural Therapist, the official journal of the Australian Natural Therapists Association with a journal article by yours truly. My article "Commiphora myrrha as an effective adjunct to antibiotic treatment in nodulocystic acne" focuses on the importance of using herbal medicine alongside antibiotic (specifically doxycycline) to improve treatment outcomes, limit adverse side effects and mitigate antibiotic drug resistance in disseminated nodulocystic acne. Thank you so much for the recognition ANTA
