21.01.2022 Last year I mentioned this great book which I devoured in one afternoon whilst in Rottnest. I absolutely loved it and I’m SO HAPPY to be able to stock it for you to read too! The book presents a series of letters written over nine months in 2020 between two strangers - American photographer Alec Soth, and creative writer Chris Fausto Cabrera. 19.01.2022 Not too long after I gave up my proper job to make hats full-time (this is back when I was living in London) - I received an out-of-the-blue call from a buyer at @harveynichols asking if I wanted to pitch to have my brand stocked in their soon to be relaunched Hat Department. For context - Harvey Nichols is a LUXURY British department store (hence the very existence of a hat department) founded 189 years ago (not sarcastic) - so this felt like a WILD and INCONCEIVABLE pro...position. Anyway, long story short, they chose two hat makers; @paulsmith AND my *made in the spare room* brand. This feels so long ago, and such a farfetched story, that I cant quite believe it happened. I made lots of bits and bobs (mainly trash), then panicked that I had so much clay left, and pumped out this serving of spoons. 17.01.2022 Yesterday I posted off 12 large prints to a lovely (and patient) couple in Switzerland. They have previously lived in WA and chose some of my images as reminders of this lovely town (which I feel really honoured about). Because the photos are taken on film (rather than digital), some of the pictures become quite abstracted when they are printed large-scale. This adds to the art-like quality of film photography, which I love. I was talking about film vs. digital photography ea...rlier today, and I likened it to creating a painting using an iPad vs. creating a painting using paint: there’s less opportunity to get it right on film BUT THAT’S THE GOOD BIT. 11.01.2022 Last Friday, Gab and I assisted Anya paint a mural at a primary school in Willeton. I didnt think about it much in advance, but having spent the day painting in front of class after class of children who open-mouth-wide-eye-watched the stark white wall being transformed into a beautiful, rich design I was struck with the following thoughts; 1. Its so important to show kids that art (Im including music, movies, graphic design, furniture, architecture, etc etc etc) is CR...EATED by HUMANS with skill, experience and practise - and that THE CREATIVE ART SECTOR is incredibly valuable to enrich our lives. 2. Watching and hearing from three women working on a skilled project (other than being a wonderful mum, or a brilliant teacher) is crucial for young boys and girls. 3. Children being told that; These are professionals, give them respect is a good way to teach kids that art is not just for fun - but can be a career that is enriching for both the practitioner and the community. There is a cynical part of me (of course, HELLO) who thinks murals are often used as a way for councils to (lazily) say; Look at us ACTIVATING! - but in this case, at this school, I think this experience will potentially change the way some of these kids view the world from now on. For some reason I was so taken aback, all I could muster up in response was, I don’t know how to answer that. Maybe I was a little offended or perhaps annoyed - but today, as I was photographing these silicone scraping spoons, I thought she was right. What sort of shop IS THIS? 04.01.2022 GUESS WHAT, WE SELL CLOCKS NOW I have had one of these flip-clocks in my kitchen for years AND I LOVE IT. Despite the fact that Im almost always running late, ironically, I find enormous comfort in having the time / day / month on easy view. These are the best quality, automated flip-clocks, with German movement (which I assume is everyones favourite kind of movement). 02.01.2022 Tonight I finished all my classes of a @murdochuniversity course I’ve been doing this past semester (via @openunisau ). I loved every minute of going back to study, and wanted to rave about this unit (Indigenous Australia and the Nation) in the hope that you might sign up next semester - but along with heck-loads of other uni courses, it’s been cut and the wonderful lecturer made redundant. The unit covered what’s happened in regards to Indigenous affairs since colonisation. ...It was fascinating, heartbreaking, enlightening, enraging, etc etc... it was REALLY brilliant, and I wish it were compulsory learning for all of us. It’s been life altering for me, a bit like a hidden room has been uncovered in my home. It also made me realise that I’m too old to know so little. I reckon a GREAT thing we can do for the good of the world (and for ourselves), is to spend a little bit of time learning about the big issues which are hard to solve / understand / detangle - especially those which exist in our country. A broader perspective is only ever helpful . . .
