20.01.2022 Depression in adolescents and young people: Explained Published: 1 July, 2019 on Black Dog Institute According to Mission Australia’s latest Youth Mental Health... report, one in four young people are at risk of serious mental health conditions. Here, Dr Aliza Werner-Seidler, Senior Research Fellow and Clinical Psychologist at the Black Dog Institute, responds to common questions asked about depression in adolescents and young people. What does depression in adolescents and young people look like? Depression can look different for different people, so it’s important to know about the range of signs and symptoms which characterise depression. Key symptoms to look out for include: A depressed or irritable mood that is present for most of the day, almost every day A loss of interest or pleasure in activities that are usually enjoyable Decreased energy, motivation and feelings of fatigue Loss of confidence and self-esteem Unreasonable feelings of guilt and self-loathing Thoughts of death, suicide, or self-harm Inability to concentrate or think clearly Problems falling asleep and staying asleep Changes in appetite and weight For teenagers, this might include not wanting to take part in activities like sports or social activities that they previously enjoyed, feeling tired during the day but still having trouble going to sleep at night, withdrawing from friends and family, and struggling to concentrate at school. 19.01.2022 A sweet little video to remind ourselves to make room for our feelings and respond to ourselves with loving-kindness.

17.01.2022 It's normal to be experiencing a rollercoaster of emotions in these unusual times, they just want to be felt, heard and comforted. Notice and name the sensations as they arise in your body and welcome them all with loving awareness and compassion

08.01.2022 As mind-blowingly scary as this podcast is I urge everybody to listen to this and how to help our tweens and teenagers navigate this awful but sadly all too common bullying.

08.01.2022 Remember anchors don't take storms away but they hold us steady. Do what you need to do to anchor yourself in the storm as it passes.

04.01.2022 You don't have to like it, you might wish it was different but it is what it is. That's acceptance. Acceptance can help us turn off the stuggle switch and get on with the things that matter.

03.01.2022 We are indeed fortunate if we have a good friend...
