15.01.2022 Kitchen island detail from our South Yarra project. The paonazzo marble was sourced from Italy specifically for this project. It is one of my favourites types of stone with its gold, yellow, brown and black marbling. It perfectly complements the stunning vintage Murano chandelier we sourced for above the dining table in the same room which was formerly a ballroom. . . .... . #katechallisinteriors #interiordesign #marble #marblekitchen #paonazzomarble See more
13.01.2022 I am often asked how we use colour. Where we get the inspiration. The answer is that there is always a reason for the choice. For the interior overhaul of Elibank House in South Yarra which had been built in 1857, we used a painting by Eugene von Guerard from the @artgalleryofnsw NSW which dated to the same year for the palette inspiration. 11.01.2022 Can't wait to share this project which is nearing completion. We commissioned @pacquitamaher to complete a mural for our client's daughter's bedroom. The brief was to make it whimsical, but not girlie and sophisticated enough as she grows. . . .... . #katechallisinteriors #interiordesign #bedroom #mural See more
08.01.2022 Like all great design, bathrooms should be practical and easy to use, but also elevate the functional into a sensory experience. In this project, we used colour texture and form to create an evocative space. 08.01.2022 Hampi is one of the most fascinating places I have ever visited. Located in east-central Karnataka, India and spread over 4,100 hectares, in the early 1500s Hampi was world's second-largest medieval-era city. After it was invaded in 1565 the city was pillaged and deserted. Now a Hindu pilgrimage centre, it is fascinating for anyone who loves architecture, art and history as it includes "forts, riverside features, royal and sacred complexes, temples, shrines, pillared halls, ...mandapas, memorial structures, water structures" set in the most superb desert setting. Part of its charm is its isolation. It took us two days of travelling on trains, buses and rickshaws to get to. There is hardly any commercial tourism, so as a visitor you stroll through the landscape and chance upon buildings and ruins. Magic. . . . . #katechallisinteriors #india #travel #magic
08.01.2022 An array of cushions in sumptuous fabrics for a project on which we have been working. The palette for the house was inspired by the clients' art collection, in particular, one work by the Indigenous artist Robert Juniper. 08.01.2022 Travel is an endless source of inspiration. As a designer, if you are just drawing inspiration from other designers, it becomes self-referral. In lieu of travel, I have been reflecting on past trips including our honeymoon in Sri Lanka, where I fell in love with the work of Geoffrey Bawa. Initially trained as a lawyer, Bawa is credited with creating a tropical modern style. We were fortunate enough to stay in a number places he designed including the Heritance Kandalama, w...hich is built into a natural rock outcrop overlooking the UNESCO Sigiriya site which evokes a certain James Bond c. Dr No aesthetic. My favourite was, however, his lakeside country estate: Lunuganga. Bawa worked on this property for over 50 years, treating this as his creative lab. Link in bio for more information on Bawa. . . . . #designinspiration #geoffreybawa #srilanka #lunaganga #katechallisinteriors
02.01.2022 MUD Australia is one of my favourite Australian companies. Porcelain hand-made in their Sydney studio in a range of superb colours, they are also committed to sustainability and giving back to the community . . . What is not to love? All these reasons are why @mudaustralia is one of my go-to places for gifts and styling. . . . .... #katechallisinteriors #interiordesign #mudaustralia #porcelain See more
01.01.2022 I am delighted to share a special collaboration with @flowersvasette and @scanlanandmakers two inspiring businesses, also led by women, who share my belief in artistry across disciplines and creating thought-provoking interpretations of beauty. Reimagining Flowers Vasette’s main wall through colour and texture, we’ve created a backdrop that demonstrates the power of colour whilst signalling a fresh start. We intend to update the wall seasonally, inspired by flowers and fo...liage as the season’s change. With retail reopening in Melbourne, I encourage you to visit Vasette and treat yourself to some flowers whilst support local business in the process. . . . . #katechallisinteriors #interiordesign #flowersvasette #supportlocal #scanlanandmakers
