21.01.2022 You may wonder why we so often assess and treat the under side of your lower rib cage. We are working on the diaphragm muscle, which is part of a treatment tha...t is looking at the respiratory-circulatory osteopathic model of treatment. The thoracic diaphragm is a domed circular muscle of respiration. It attaches the whole way around the inside of the lower 6 ribs, the xiphoid, the lumbar vertebra (L1-L3) via the diaphragmatic crura, and has attachments to the arches over the iliopsoas and quadratus lumborum muscles. To say the least, it's a pretty integral part of you body. The capacity to breathe allows the free movement of body fluids and according to the concept of this model, treatment can improve respiratory dysfunction affecting the lung, rib cage, vascular, and lymphatic motion. The founder of osteopathic medicine emphasised the importance of the thoracic diaphragm and body health. #hinterlandosteopathy #osteopathy #breathedeep #breatheeasy #structureandfunction #holistichealth

19.01.2022 What is #osteopathy? Osteopathy is a manual therapy and hands on treatment that may include massage, stretching, repetitive movements, mobilisation and/or mani...pulation. Osteopaths focus on your neuro-musculoskeletal system - the bones, muscles, nerves and other tissues that support your body and control its movements. Osteopaths may help with relief from musculoskeletal pain and discomfort, provide clinical exercise programs and offer advice about your lifestyle, stress management, diet or other factors that may influence your pain, injury or movement.

17.01.2022 Give PEACE & LOVE a chance We all think of the acronym RICE (R-rest, I-ice, C-compression, E-elevation) for acute injury treatment. A new set of acronyms ...has been proposed by the British Journal of Sports Medicine (BJSM) - PEACE and LOVE. The PEACE acronym refers to the treatment of injuries for the first few days post-injury and LOVE refers to the treatment of injury after the initial healing phase (after 3-7 days). Full article can be found at https://bjsm.bjm.com/content/54/2/72

14.01.2022 Get your yoga on and improve your mood The British Journal of Sports Medicine took a look at the effects of yoga on depressive symptoms in people with mental ...disorders. The study showed that physically active yoga has a positive effect on improving depressive symptoms in people with a range of mental disorders and that session frequency per week significantly influences the magnitude of depressive symptom reduction. 13.01.2022 While pain flare-ups are very painful and scary. The common triggers are poor sleep, stress, tension, worries, low mood, inactivity or unaccustomed activity. Un...derstanding these contributing factors can help you put in place practices that help prevent exacerbations. If you have a flare-up, instead of treating it like an injury, try to stay calm, relax and keep moving. #hinterlandosteopathy #calm #keepmoving #relax #bekindtoyourmind

13.01.2022 We obviously all do it, however, ‘remember to breathe’ in this context refers to spending a moment to take a deep breath, or to slow your breathing rate down, f...ocus your mind and to catch up with yourself amidst your busy life. One example is the practice of 2-to-1 breathing (exhalation at a duration twice as long as inhalation). Depending on how you count your breath cycles, this may involve inhaling for the count of 2 and exhaling for the count of 4. The technique of 2-to-1 breathing facilitates a deepening of relaxation by extending the period of parasympathetic activity (rest and digest) within each breath. To put it more simply, 2-to-1 breathing decreases nerve activity in the sympathetic nervous system (fight or flight), which arouses the body for physical activity and exertion, and increases the influence of the more quieting parasympathetic nervous system, which regulates the relaxation response

11.01.2022 LET YOURSELF REST If you’re exhausted, rest. If you don’t feel like starting a new project, don’t.... If you don’t feel the urge to make something new, just rest in the beauty of the old, the familiar, the known. If you don’t feel like talking, stay silent. If you’re fed up with the news, turn it off. If you want to postpone something until tomorrow, do it. If you want to do nothing, let yourself do nothing today. Feel the fullness of the emptiness, the vastness of the silence, the sheer life in your unproductive moments. Time does not always need to be filled. You are enough, simply in your being. - Jeff Foster

08.01.2022 For your reading pleasure We've just purchased these fantastic books to live in Hinterland reception. They are fantastic resources for understanding and manag...ing pain. "All pain is real, and for many people it is a debilitating part of everyday life. It is now known that understanding more about why things hurt can actually help people to manage their pain and continue to go about daily life. Recent advances in fields such as neurophysiology, brain imaging, immunology, psychology and cellular biology have provided an explanatory platform from which to explore pain. Written by David Butler and Lorimer Mosley, Explain Pain uses simple language to discuss how pain responses are produced by the brain: how the autonomic motor and immune systems in your body contribute to pain in response to injury, and why pain can persist after tissues have had plenty of time to heal." #hinterlandosteopathy #explainpain #paineducation #understandingbringschange #keepmoving

06.01.2022 Every now and again almost every patient that walks in the door, sits down and says the same thing. Its often something like "I'm so tired, exhausted, its so hu...mid out there, I don't know what's wrong with me". Its also often at these times when its especially humid or cold, or those times when there's a lot going on in the world, whether that's your personal world or things like covid or political upheavals or Christmas is just around the corner. As humans we so often expect to be able to achieve the same things all of the time. We live our weeks to a schedule and often expect to be able to handle that schedule well throughout the year and beyond that as we age. However, the world we live in doesn't really work like that, we have cycles, seasons and many influences outside of us that are beyond our control that we also experience as humans. Our bodies use more energy coping with things like humidity and cold and stress and in these times we might be slightly less capable of doing the things we normally do. We might feel exhausted and we might need a Nanna nap Remember to listen to your body and give yourself a break.
