22.01.2022 It has been a busy few months for the team, traveling all over the top end, preg testing & performing endless horse dentals. Whilst the days can be long the perfect sunrise makes up for those early starts, not to mention the teams in the yards! Thanks to all that make our vets days easier and enjoyable! If you require any preg testing or horse dentals don’t be shy, call the clinic (8972 2752) and lock us in!!
22.01.2022 Hookworm ( ) is a parasite that primarily infects the small intestine of dogs. It thrives outside of the host (dogs) in warm, moist, tropical environments - perfect Katherine conditions. Hookworms along with whipworms and roundworms are significant infectious agents in dogs given their ability to persist in the environment and cause infections (larva migrans) in humans! It is therefore advantageous to prevent infection and contamination of the envi...ronment. Hookworms have a large mouth (buccal cavity) with 3 sets of teeth - these teeth enable attachment to the intestinal wall, which then allows them to suck and ingest blood. This inevitably leads to the dog becoming anaemic - lethargy, pale gums, occasional bloody diarrhea and inappetence are clinical signs you may see. In short, the adults breed in the intestines, eggs are shed in faeces (in the environment the eggs move through their life cycle from egg to larvae) and then re-enter the host through ingestion or skin penetration. The larvae migrate either directly from the stomach to the intestine or via the lungs and the trachea to the intestine. Larvae can also gain access to puppies via the bitches milk at suckling. This process can take 2-4 weeks. How to avoid infection: * Clean up dog faeces - minimise environmental contamination * Cover sandpits to avoid faecal contmination * Worm your pets! Using an approved veterinary anthelminthic (worming product) worm puppies from 2 weeks of age, every two weeks, until 12 weeks, then every month till 6 months. Adult dogs should be wormed, on average, every 3 months. If you are concerned about your puppy/dog we provide rapid in clinic faecal testing. We also stock a number of recommended wormers for all stages of your pets life. Please call the clinic on 8972 2752 or pop in to see the team. #hookworm #anaemia #deworm #preventionisbetterthanthecure #teamkvcc #drontal #loveyourpetloveyourvet

11.01.2022 ... , , ... is a bacteria that is carried by the brown dog tick. Once present in the tick population, control will be challenging and the disease is unlikely to be eradicated. When dogs are bitten by the brown dog tick, the bacteria enters the dogs circulating blood and the following symptoms may be seen:... * fever * lethargy * appetite loss * cloudy eyes/conjunctivitis * bleeding disorders (eg nose bleeds / bruising) Unfortunately, if not properly treated, infection can result in death. As with most diseases, PREVENTION IS BETTER THAN THE CURE! * tick collars (Seresto) and spot on (Advantix) are the best (recommended) primary protection. Both products contain a repellant which help to deter the ticks These products should be used in combination with: * Tablets / chews (Nexgard) that are registered for tick control * Management of tick infestations in your house/yard * Avoid exposure to high tick areas where possible * Inspect your dog daily for ticks A dog will not acquire immunity once infected and successfully treated, hence there is a risk of multiple infections. If you have any queries about ticks, the risk of infection, testing for the disease or prevention, please call the clinic (8972 2752) or drop in to see the team! *if your dog is displaying any of the above mentioned clinical signs, seek veterinary attention immediately #ehrlichiacanis #bacteria #browndogtick #preventionisbetterthancure #seresto #advantix #nexgard #teamkvcc #loveyourpetliveyourvet

04.01.2022 The team at KVCC have had a very successful artificial insemination program this season! All mares that underwent A.I. utilised frozen semen, which is not without its challenges! Frozen semen is collected from a stallion, extended, frozen into straws and kept in liquid nitrogen. It is important to note, not all stallion semen tolerates the freeze/thaw process. One needs to see at least 30% progressive motility (travel in a relatively s...traight line) of the semen once thawed. Frozen semen also requires intensive mare management as insemination needs to occur at or very close to ovulation. Ultrasound exam occurs 8-10 times a day as ovulation approaches. Certain ovulation inducing drugs are utilised to allow for more controlled timing and to minimize missed opportunities! A.I. can be utilised for a number of reasons including, but not limited too, stallion availability (the tyranny of distance, especially in the NT), management of mare reproductive difficulties, stallion efficiency etc... If you would like to make use of our A.I. services, please call the clinic on 8972 2752 #breedingseason #equineai #postivepregnancy #teamkvcc
