21.01.2022 A diastema is an abnormal gap between two teeth. Multiple diastema are called diastemata. Diastema can be caused by many things, and can lead to feed trapping between the teeth as seen in the picture below. This can then lead to periodontal disease and much bigger problems. Treatment is to widen the space using a specialised burr so that food can more easily cycle through the gap rather than getting stuck in there. As you can see in the picture the food trapped much more in the narrow side of the gap near the palate, not towards the cheek where the gap is wider.

21.01.2022 Yee-ha!! That’s one excited pony

19.01.2022 Exciting news! I am in the process of establishing the new patient management software program for the practice. Ezyvet is a smart, secure and integrative program allowing me to manage both your personal details and animal details in one place, along with clinical history and financials. ezyvetGO will allow me to access to the program whilst I’m on the go! So I will always be able to access your horses records during your appointment for more convenience. ... The best bit- once all the animal details including vaccination due dates etc are updated , the system will automatically email you important reminders when your horse has upcoming treatments due- so you never have to worry about remembering these again! I will also be able to take photos or videos that can be attached to the records for future reference! (How cool is this!!) So, if your currently a client you may receive an email requesting some additional information so I can make sure all of your horses records are up to date and complete!

08.01.2022 I’ve been really busy the past couple of weeks, and I haven’t got around to doing the next dental post. But when one of my clients sent me these pictures how could I not share!! Little horses need dentals too, and it was lovely to have this gorgeous little gal interested in what I was doing to her ponies mouth

06.01.2022 Do you have a horse in their teens? Or older? Did you know that horses begin to have age related changes in their teeth around this age that results in less functional chewing surface and can result in secondary complications such as choke, colic, or even weight loss? Below is an informative article about dental changes in older horses! ... Every horse should receive a thorough dental examination at least once per year, and in older horses we recommend twice a year! A dental should not just be about removing sharp points, but also looking at all of the teeth for other issues such as abnormal wear, periodontal disease and infundibular caries just to name a few. If your older horse hasn’t had a dental check in the last 6 months consider booking them in with an experienced equine dental vet soon! https://www.facebook.com/56880838282/posts/10158141608428283/

03.01.2022 From the outside this little guy was just adorable, but on the inside his teeth were definately not pretty! He had worn teeth resulting in overgrown teeth, missing teeth resulting in tall teeth, and some pretty huge ramps due to no opposing teeth. All of this has lead to a pretty decent decrease in the amount of surface area available for chewing, and a gridlocktype effect in the mouth. ... Horses chew in a figure of 8 pattern, side to side and front to back. So having such uneven teeth restricts this movement affecting the horses ability to chew food normally. Surprisingly this boy wasn’t showing any signs of having dental issues, but his mum booked in with Dr Sarah who is experienced in equine dentistry and was able to help this little man feel better. He will require several visits to get things back to more normal, but we are told his is definitely much happier!
