24.01.2022 The rather beautiful consequence of the bushfires and COVID was a reminder to be still and listen to myself. When I was a student at the Royal College of Music, the exchange rate from Australian dollars to British pounds was cut throat - three dollars into the pound. So the cost of each lesson was about $1500. I could only afford - on the funds I had - to study for one year. ... This cost really drove home to me he preciousness of a master's voice and the urgency of getting right between lessons. And further, the fleeting time on this earth we have to learn our craft and bring it to the stage. Every lesson with my professor Julian Jacobson, and extra lessons with Nelly Akopian-Tamarina, Roger Vignoles, David Kent and Peter Frankl, I took notes, went back to my hall of residence, and then practised using a mini disc recorder to learn the lessons my teachers taught me. It was truly an unforgivable sin to have the same lesson twice. Sometimes it happened, but rarely. COVID and all its lockdowns has reminded me of this process - record, listen, reflect, change. And whilst it has been an appalling year for the industry, as an artist it has brought me back finally to that introspective stillness. Thank you universe!
