25.01.2022 the Art of the sail maker from another age

24.01.2022 SAMANTHE, launched in 1972, was designed by Robert H. Baker. At just 26' on deck, she has a large cockpit and a confined interior, yet her proportions and beaut...y are hard for anyone to deny. She was featured in WoodenBoat's Save a Classic department in WB No. 274, and is currently being refurbishedincluding new keel timber, new decks, and new engineat First Light Boatworks in Chatham, Massachusetts. 21.01.2022 A few days back I posted an image of the Pride of Baltimore II with all her sails out. I had several questions about what those sails are called so when I spott...ed this image I had to share it with you. Mind you, I learned different names for several of those sails, but if it gets you there who cares what it's called. This is also Pride II. See more

20.01.2022 Nick Thompson posted this image of Pamir with the names of all her sails. I cleaned it up a bit and hope you enjoy it as much as I do.

18.01.2022 Salty Superstitions - renaming a ship still to this day is a huge taboo for sailors! A ship could only have its name changed if it was absolutely essential, and... only by carrying out a strict sequence of actions. If you thought that was complicated enough, spare a thought for French sailors, who (in addition to all this) believed that 15 August was the only day on which you could safely rename a ship! 18.01.2022 Now here is a serious piece of history. Your big chance to learn where the expression "Butt Load" came from.

16.01.2022 Good news! - subject to ongoing Public Health Orders and existing COVID-19 restrictions, SICYC will host the 2020 Shag Islet Rendezvous at Shag Islet and Cape G...loucester from the 27th - 30th August 2020 - tell your Shagger friends and share this message! COVID19 Restrictions at the time apply - please check Queensland Government website for details. Restrictions at Cape Gloucester Beach Resort will also apply. At this stage Cape Gloucester Resort can cater for up to 250 people in total. Wrist bands will be required to attend the SICYC events and they will be capped at 200 to allow for other guests at the resort and staff. All details to follow and all is subject to change. Due to lack of planning time there will be no fixed schedule and to some degree we will be making it up as we go, however we will pull together whatever we can within the restricted time frame. We plan to keep it very low key and traditional without the big production of years gone by. Instead we will focus on what makes SICYC great - all of us having a great time together and connecting or reconnecting with like minded people in a great setting. So far we have: Thursday 27th August - meet and greet - wear your polos - details to follow Friday 28th August - the Iconic Shag Islet party at low tide - wear your polos - bring your own everything - there may or may not be a BBQ, Radio etc - we will let you know closer to the day Saturday 29th August - Parrot Head theme - could be anything from a jam session on the beach to ???? Stand by for more details Sunday 30th August - Pirates Day of course !! Keep an eye out here and on our website www.sicyc.com.au and your emails - when you're at anchor in Gloucester Passage tune in to VHF 72 each morning at 08:00 for daily updates. We will need volunteers as always - if you are keen to help out please let me know by sending an email to [email protected] Fair winds and following seas, Steve Hartley, President

15.01.2022 Have you tried this? Each finger = 15 minutes of daylight. Great method to use while out in the bush and if you’re out with the kids, they’ll love testing it!

14.01.2022 Trivia Time - as far back as the 1500s, the ship’s bell was used to mark the passage of time and regulate the sailors’ duty watch. It was traditionally made from brass, with the ship’s name engraved on it along with the year in which it was launched.
