23.01.2022 Today, I am really excited to share with you one of the secrets of health and beauty! It is the value of bone broth whether as the base for a hearty winter soup, or for any dishes where liquid is required during cooking, or even as a main meal if you happen to have chosen cuts that are quite meaty, such as oxtail, osso buco or chicken ( whole or in part ). Winter is well and truly here. So why not start now? When I was growing up in Mauritius in a Chinese household, bone bro...Continue reading
20.01.2022 This is photo of the salt lamps in my practice rooms. In this post, I'm addressing the subject of negative ions and their role in keeping you healthy this winter. The cold has arrived in Canberra! With the warm days gone for the next few months, it is time to enhance the air you breathe in your indoor environment. I covered the benefits of forest bathing in my previous posts. A forest is charged up with negative ions. Odourless , tasteless, and invisible, these molecules c...harge up the air in a wonderful way. They are believed to produce biochemical reactions that increase levels of the mood chemical serotonin, helping to alleviate depression, relieve stress, and boost our daytime energy. Ions are molecules that have gained or lost an electrical charge. They are created in nature as air molecules break apart due to sunlight, radiation and moving air and water. You may have experienced the power of negative ions when you last set foot on the beach or walked beneath a waterfall. The air circulating in the mountains and the beach is said to contain tens of thousands of negative ions, much more than the average home or office building. Ion researcher Michael Terman, PhD, of Columbia University in New York, claims that the action of the pounding surf creates negative air ions and we also see it immediately after spring thunderstorms when people report lightened moods. Pierce J. Howard, PhD, author of The Owners Manual for the Brain: Everyday Applications from Mind Brain Research and director of research at the Center for Applied Cognitive Sciences in Charlotte, N.C, states that negative ions increase the flow of oxygen to the brain, resulting in higher alertness, decreased drowsiness, and more mental energy. They also may protect against germs in the air, resulting in decreased irritation due to inhaling various particles that make you sneeze, cough, or have a throat irritation." This winter, why not put back in your indoor environment what air conditioners and electrical appliances deplete? You may not even have to buy a negative-ion generator since Harold Nelson, MD, professor of medicine at National Jewish Medical Center in Denver has tested them and found them not particularly useful. There are simple ways however to generate negative ions. In fact, your home already has a built-in natural ionizer: it's the humble shower. Every time you use the shower, the water droplets collide with one another while moving through the air and become negative ions. Thanks to their small size, they’re readily absorbed into the skin and bloodstream to produce their positive effects. Green plants and salt lamps also bring sizeable benefits, so why not combine all of the above, namely the shower, indoor plants and salt lamps to help boost your way to health and make this winter the best one you have ever had!
19.01.2022 Here we come 2018! Why not try something a bit different this year? Like eating sardines, which I love ...... I often get asked how to eat this ghastly fish ?!? Well, if you were like me who grew up on the beautiful island of Mauritius, you would love it too; it's a very simple and popular dish the locals call "Chatini Sardines" meaning Sardines chutney, or salsa. No cooking required makes it a bonus! Just open a tin of sardines ( the best are the ones in olive oil) and tip i...nto a bowl of chopped tomatoes, chopped red onions, chopped coriander. Flavour with chilli flakes, salt and pepper, and voila! Eat with a crusty bread roll! Bon appetit! According to Wikipedia, sardines are highly nutritious; they are rich in vitamins and minerals. A small serving of sardines once a day can provide up to 13% of the RDA (recommended daily allowance) value of vitamin B2; roughly one-quarter of the RDA of niacin, and about 150% of the RDA of vitamin B12. All B vitamins help to support proper nervous system function and are used for energy metabolism, or converting food into energy. Also, sardines are high in the major minerals such as phosphorus, calcium, potassium, and some trace minerals such as iron and selenium. Sardines are also a natural source of marine omega-3 fatty acids, which reduce the occurrence of cardiovascular disease. Recent studies suggest the regular consumption of omega-3 fatty acids reduces the likelihood of developing Alzheimer's disease and can even boost brain function. These fatty acids may also help lower blood sugar levels a small amount. They are also a good source of vitamin D, calcium, and protein. Because they are low in the food chain, sardines are very low in contaminants, such as mercury, relative to other fish commonly eaten by humans.
12.01.2022 How much water to drink in a day This is a question that often comes up. The short answer as a guide is to drink as much as to pass urine that is a light straw colour. For those who prefer a more technical answer: Drink in fluid ounces the number obtained in your body weight in pounds ( as opposed to kilos) divided by two! Here's cheers to health and wellness!
08.01.2022 Hi amazing people, International women's Day today. Let's remember to edify at least one woman in our lives/ communities. I'm starting with our most senior family member, and making sure grandma gets a thumbs up from the kids
07.01.2022 My dear fellow pilgrims on this journey called life, As I was pondering on the past year, helping others and myself overcome pain, it became apparent that the reason life presents us all with challenges is so that we can become increasingly empowered human beings! Illness is indeed a reset button. So with this in mind, and in the spirit of adventure, I am extending my invitation to you all to embrace life with all that it brings, with the expectation that the outcome will be nothing short of extraordinary! May our lives therefore be like the lotus flower which caught my attention during my recent walk around the lake. It stood majestic above the lake, emerging from the murky waters! Just wonderfully inspiring

04.01.2022 Greetings on the second day of Autumn! Today, I'm posting a photo I took during my recent trip to Forster with my family. All seven of us, adults as well as children, loved imbibing in this beautiful forest atmosphere. That activity is called forest bathing. No alcohol and no calories! No jokes either; this actually works! It is good for everyone. Dr Bill Rawls claims that forest bathing lowers the rates of mental issues as it allows the prefrontal cortex to take a break, with direct benefits to stress hormones and heart rate. Please share this post with those who need it! For more information, visit shinrin-yoku.org to read about what Japanese scientists have found in their research that can benefit your health and that of your loved ones.
03.01.2022 My last post extolled the benefits of shinrin-yoku, forest bathing. We are a lucky lot here in Canberra. Our beautiful city boasts a fantastic rainforest at the botanical gardens. Has anyone visited there lately? If not, why not make it your destination next week-end? Your body will love imbibing in the fresh and crisp atmosphere, being invigorated at the systemic as well as the cellular level. Remember also that forest bathing lowers the rates of mental issues as it allows ...the prefrontal cortex to take a break, with direct benefits to stress hormones and heart rate. Not to mention that wonderful feeling of being at one with nature, as we effortlessly benefit the other through a symbiotic relationship: carbon dioxide in exchange for oxygen, and vice-versa. Anyone in need of a well-deserved break? Then head to the rainforest; it is literally in our backyard. I hope that this photo of the beautiful rainforest at our botanical gardens will inspire you to become a frequent visitor. Your visits will pay tribute to the ones who had the vision, sixty years ago, to set out to do what many sceptics said was impossible: to create a rainforest from a dry creek bed. Happy Shinrin-yoku! 01.01.2022 Hello and welcome to summer, a time when staying hydrated is paramount. Many of you will recall that I was born and bred on the beautiful island of Mauritius amidst majestic coconut palms. In fact my family home had three of such in our own backyard. Drinking coconut water, eating the young coconut flesh, and making coconut chutney are all reminiscent of my childhood! Here are some facts about the modest coconut water which seems to have taken the western world by storm lately. Coconut water contains five key electrolytes: sodium, potassium, calcium, magnesium, and phosphorus. Coconut water is packed with potassium, more than found in one banana or sport drinks!! Impressive, would you agree? Next time you shop, make sure you have some in your trolley
