25.01.2022 Who loves a coffee? Today is international coffee day! Often people worry about the amount of coffee and caffeine they consume. Safe levels of caffeine consumption are considered up to 400mg per day. For pregnant women, studies have found less than 200mg per day was not associated with adverse outcomes for the baby. ... An instant coffee provides around 80mg caffeine, while an expresso provides around 145mg. However, caffeine is found in a number of products not just coffee so you have to count any tea, chocolate, soft drinks, sport supplements into your daily caffeine amount.

24.01.2022 I find commonly my clients dont know what to do with quinoa when it comes to the kitchen. Quinoa is a naturally gluten free and versatile grain packed full of fibre, and even contains protein. So, I found an awesome soup recipe that uses quinoa. Recipe has been tried and tested in my cooking workshops so you know its great! Quinoa Minestrone; serves 4 -1 brown onion, coarsely chopped -1 carrot, coarsely chopped -1 celery stick, coarsely chopped... -2 garlic cloves, halved -2 teaspoons extra virgin olive oil -100g pancetta, chopped -1 dried bay leaf -1L chicken style liquid stock -410g can crushed tomatoes -13 cup quinoa, rinsed -2 small zucchinis, finely chopped -400g can borlotti beans, rinsed, drained METHOD 1.Process the onion, carrot, celery and garlic in a food processor until finely chopped. 2.Heat the oil in a saucepan over medium-low heat. Add the pancetta. Cook, stirring, for 2 minutes or until golden. 3.Add the vegetable mixture and bay leaf. Cook, covered, stirring occasionally, for 4 minutes or until soft. 4.Add stock and tomato to pan. Increase heat to high. Bring to the boil. Stir in quinoa, reduce heat and simmer, stirring occasionally, for 5 minutes. 5.Stir in zucchini and continue to cook, stirring occasionally, for another 5 minutes. Add borlotti beans. Cook, stirring occasionally, until zucchini is tender. See more

21.01.2022 I am guilty of accidentally putting my tomatoes in the fridge. Did you know chilling tomatoes damages the cell membranes and inhibits enzyme activity, which in turn will give you a less flavoursome tomato.

20.01.2022 I have more and more clients opting for alternative milk products such as almond, rice or oat milk. Which can be a great option if you are lactose intolerant or vegan but what many dont realise is milk alternatives nutritionally do not compare to cows milk. -Cows milk provides a good source of protein but unfortunately plant-based milks do not. -If you use plant-based milks, particularly as smoothies or in your cereal it may be worth looking at what protein you can add to your meal/snack to make up for the lack of protein coming from the milk.

17.01.2022 Everyone loves watermelon, but often I get clients worried about the sugar content. So, let’s have a look; 91% of watermelon is water so it can be great hydrating snack. Provides a good amount of vitamin C and vitamin A to support a good immune system. Has more of the antioxidant lycopene than tomatoes! ... Per 100g a watermelon has less sugar than an apple. Yes, watermelon has a high glycaemic index (GI) but that is because it has such a high-water content paired with a low fibre content the body can easily absorb it’s sugars. Watermelon can be included as part of a healthy diet and form part of your 2 pieces of fruit per day.

17.01.2022 With gluten free becoming quite a fad lately its important to remember for those that are coeliac disease it is a medical necessity to avoid all gluten, even trace amounts. If you are having trouble sticking to a complete gluten free diet consider seeing an Accredited Practising Dietitian, like myself, as even very small amounts of gluten can cause damage, with or without obvious symptoms. #treatglutenseriously!

15.01.2022 Milk alternatives are becoming more and more popular however, they arent all created equal. It may surprise you how many are on the market and contain little or no calcium yet are still considered a milk alternative. When choosing a milk choose one with more than 120mg of calcium per 100ml.

14.01.2022 Do you use canned vegetables? I recently discovered I love canned mushrooms. They taste great in casseroles, pies and soups. If you are concerned about the level of sodium in canned vegetables, you can reduce the sodium by 41% by draining and rinsing your canned veggies. And if that hasnt convinced you, sodium from canned vegetables only accounts for about 1% of total sodium from the average diet. So if you don't already, give canned vegetable a go! They are an easy, accessible & affordable way to add veggies in your meals. Infographic credit: Cans Get You Cooking

13.01.2022 I may be late to this party as I know meal delivery kits have been popular the last few years but I finally tried a meal kit delivery service! The other week I started ordering HelloFresh. Note this is not a sponsored post. HelloFresh has surprised me as it was exactly what it stated deliciously simple, easy-to-follow recipes and fresh. I have honestly enjoyed a new taste of dinners and not having to think of what to cook. ... However, Im not sure many people realise this but most meal kits are not catering for the weight loss market and many recipes are actually quite high in calories. Often when I ask my clients about their dinner meal, they simply state oh but we do HelloFresh or Marley Spoon. This actually gives me no nutritional information about their diet as each meal is so varied. For example, you can get burgers or you could get a salad meal. Fresh does not equal healthy but is often used in marketing to make you think something is healthier. If you are needing a specific diet for your health or are trying to reach a particular health goal, meal delivery kits might not be right for you. For more specific health goals make sure you talk to your doctor or a dietitian.

13.01.2022 Have you tried pulse pasta before? Making the switch to a pulse type pasta will still provide you the same amount of calories as a wheat based pasta but will pack you a punch of additional protein and fibre!

11.01.2022 Insight into what my cooking workshop for National Diabetes week cooked up for a healthy lunch. Roasted root vegetable tart served with a potato salad! #NDW2019 #colesmag

11.01.2022 Many vitamins, minerals, phytochemicals & polyphenols are concentrated in the skin of a vegetable. An unpeeled cucumber has more than double the amount of fibre than if you peel it.

11.01.2022 We all know almonds are a healthy snack option, however I often see people forgetting about all the other nuts they could include in their diet. Each nut has its own unique composition and can provide us with different vitamins and minerals. Almonds have the highest protein content as well as providing a source of calcium and vitamin E, but cashews provide more iron while Brazil nuts have more magnesium and selenium. If you are like me and actually not too keen on almonds , remember you can still get lots of health benefit from including other varieties of nuts.

11.01.2022 How often do you eat fermented foods? You may think fermented foods are just another fad of 2019, but fermented foods have been around for thousands of years and were an essential way to process and preserve food. Fermented foods are rich in beneficial probiotics.... Many health benefits have been associated with fermentation. Can help restore the balance of friendly bacteria in your gut Boost your immune system Increases availability of nutrients There have also been some studies showing fermented foods improving heart health as well as showing a reduction in symptoms of anxiety & depression.

10.01.2022 Throw out your low-fat milk! .... Just joking but you may be glad to hear the Heart Foundation has just released it has lifted their recommendation to choose low fat dairy products. Review of the latest evidence suggests a neutral relationship between dairy foods and cardiovascular risk. Their position statement summary states there is not enough evidence to recommend full fat over low fat or vice versa for the general healthy population. For those with heart disease or hig...h cholesterol it is still recommended to choose low fat dairy products. Now it might feel frustrating and confusing that nutrition recommendations change over the time but it isnt easy to determine a cause and effect on a single food product or nutrients. This new evidence recognises that healthy eating patterns do not rely on one type of food or nutrient to promote health. One food or nutrient is not the key to health, so continue to enjoy a variety of foods and if you have always had low fat milk and wish to continue thats okay. See more

10.01.2022 Hands up if you include lentils in your meals. Lentils may be small, but they pack a nutritional punch! 1 cup of lentils provides more than half your daily fibre needs, 18g protein, as well as being a source of iron & magnesium. ... What I love about lentils is they are available all year round and are easy to use. Just throw them into pasta sauces, stews, soups, curries and even salads. Check out my lamb lentil salad. Serves 2; 300g lamb back strap, raw, sliced 400g brown canned lentils, rinsed cup quinoa 2 cups chopped vegetables (carrot, bok choy, green beans, red onion) 1 tbsp. olive oil 2 tbsp tzatziki Squeeze of lemon 1.Cook quinoa according to packet instructions. 2. Heat a non-stick frying pan over medium heat. Drizzle with oil. Season lamb. Cook lamb, turning, for 5-6 minutes. Then place vegetables into pan for 1-2 minutes. 3. Add lentils to pan, for 30 seconds, just to heat through. 4.To serve mix lamb, lentils and vegetables with cooked quinoa. Squeeze lemon over and top with tzatziki.
