23.01.2022 Meet the new Co-Chair of KEAG Jon Kanoa (Jon takes over from Rachel Muir who made significant and valuable contributions to the KEAG committee over many years. A big thank you to Rachel from the committee). Ngata (hello), ... My name is Jon Kanoa, proud Kerrupjmara (Gunditjmara) through my Nan's lines Margaret Lovett, and Bunitj (West Arnhem) through my Pops lines Peter Kanoa Rotumah. I also acknowledge my Welsh, Irish and Scottish history through both My mum and Dads line. I was born in Heywood (Western Victoria) and moved to Ballarat when I was a young fella with my family. I am currently employed as the Chief Operating Officer with the Ballarat and District Aboriginal Co-operative (BADAC) where I have been a member for many years. My role is very important in supporting Karen Heap (our deadly CEO) to implement the organisation’s strategic plan, oversee operations and support our staff in providing services to the community at a high standard. I have previously worked across many fields of the community and government sectors which has allowed me to strengthen my knowledge to use as a tool in bringing community together. I want to be the strongest advocate for all our community both Aboriginal and non-Aboriginal so we can walk together and celebrate our diverse culture whilst acknowledging our past. Although my work has been heavy over the past 20 years, it does take a back seat to my family. My wife Erin and my kids Ashleigh, Charlotte and Harrison are my world, we try to engage with as many events, meetings and cultural activities as we can to stay connected to culture and be a voice for our community whether we are on our traditional lands or abroad. I will continue to fight the good fight for our community serving KEAG whilst acknowledging the hard work of our previous/current community and council members in moving forward. I am looking forward to the exciting adventure ahead. Hope you are all well and stay safe, KEAG Co-Chair Jon Kanoa

05.01.2022 Survival Day Dawn Service marks significance of January the 26th In western Victoria, Ballarat's Koorie Engagement Action Group (KEAG) has held its s...econd Survival Day Dawn Service to mark January the 26th, 1788. The ceremony by Lake Wendouree acknowledged the devastating effects of colonisation on Indigenous communities across the country. For the first time the service was live-streamed, due to the coronavirus pandemic, and members of KEAG said they hoped the online access would encourage the broader community to be educated about the significance of the date. Close to 1000 people viewed the service, with more than 100 viewers from overseas. Torres Strait Islander woman and KEAG member Deb Clark said it was vital to provide a space for conversations about the true history of Australia. "It's about understanding that disposition, the diseases that wiped out so many of the population, the violence that happened and the deaths that were caused from the frontiers, and the destruction of culture," she said. "The exploitation of people and the families that were torn apart - the last 200 years tells that tale and we listen to the true story." Ms Clark said the service was also an important opportunity for healing. "(The dawn service) is also about solidarity, it's about people standing together," Ms Clark said. "Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander history and Culture... must be embedded into our conversation so that truer history, that has been forgotten and excluded, has a place," she said.

01.01.2022 2021 Victorian Aboriginal Remembrance Service, will be held at the Melbourne Shrine on Monday 31 May 2021, 10:45 AM - 1:45 PM. The contribution of Aboriginal service men and women to the First World War has not always been well recognised. Between 800 and 1,000 Aboriginal Australians volunteered to enlist in the First World War. At enlistment camps, Aboriginal Australians stood side by side with other Australians to answer the call of duty. ... They fought together with their mates in the trenches, they suffered the hardships of war, and their families and communities grieved those who didn’t come home. The Victorian Indigenous Remembrance Service was initiated by Aunty Dot Peters, a Wurundjeri Elder, who wanted to recognise the service of her father, who died on the Burma Railway, to commemorate the service of all those Aboriginal service men and women who have served in the Australian Defence Force.
