20.01.2022 With a very, very different ANZAC 2020 wreaths were laid at our Cenotaph in the shortest time possible with all five members keeping their social distance and really feeling the sombre occasion this year. Thank you to everyone who honoured past and present Defence Veterans in their own way whether it be in your driveway, viewing ceremonies online or TV or just taking the time to remember in your own way at home. It is very heartwarming to see the response across the Nation!

19.01.2022 This Remembrance Day, you can honour our veterans in many different ways.

17.01.2022 Kedron-Wavell Sub Branch RSL Wood Carving Group: This group has been operating at the Voyager Centre situated in the Chermside Historical Precinct since approximately 1998. The group is funded by the Sub Branch but is not restricted to RSL Members as any of the approx. 80,000 members of Kedron Wavell Services Club can join. At present we are operating with an average of 20 active members, mostly in the 70/80 age group. While the main emphasis has been on wood carving, late...ly we have branched out and the group collectively involved in wood carving, making jewellery boxes, wood-turning and making wooden cheese and cake knives. All members have their own particular talents and interests and there is a great exchange of ideas and those who are particularly talented are always willing to spend time advising and helping those of us who are less talented. We have demonstrated and exhibited at several exhibitions and seminars. The atmosphere is exceptionally friendly and the group usually hold twice yearly dinners with wives and partners although COVID_19 has put hold on this so far this year, but we will most certainly start up again when safe. We meet on Wednesdays from about 8:30 am to 1:00 pm and are considering working Friday mornings as well. We are somewhat limited as the complex is used by a lot of other crafts during the week, one of the reasons the group was originally stared was to give Veterans a place to go to discuss problems and while this in no longer the reason for our existence, the support and companionship generated within this group is of great benefit to all and also enables us to nurture or talents. If you are interest in joining us please call Peter Saxon at the Sub Branch, if you leave your number with receptionist Peter will call you back

11.01.2022 Kedron Acapella had been preparing for the Lutwyche Dawn Service and Kedron-Wavell Services Club Anzac Day service during all of Term 1. Along with Mrs Hammerme...ister and Ms Want, they decided to not let all their hard work go to waste and teamed up this week to put together their first ever virtual choral experience of In Flanders Fields. Its pretty tricky to sing along in time to a recording at home and only hear your voice back. Mrs Hammermeister was not aiming for perfection but simply an opportunity to see our Kedron Acapella students shine. Historic fact about In Flanders Fields. A war rondeau written on 1915 by Lieutenant-Colonel John McCrae, a poet, physician, and soldier of Canada. He wrote the poem the day after performing the burial service of his close friend, Alexis Helmer who was killed during the Second Battle of Ypres in Flanders, Belgium. At the burial McCrae noted how quickly red poppy flowers grew around the graves of those who died at Ypres. The following day, after finishing his composition, McCrae handed his notepad to another member of his unit, Sergeant Major Cyril Allinson, who read the poem and described it as being almost an exact description of the scene in front of us both. In Flanders fields the poppies blow Between the crosses, row on row, That mark our place; and in the sky The larks, still bravely singing, fly Scarce heard amid the guns below. We are the Dead. Short days ago We lived, felt dawn, saw sunset glow, Loved and were loved, and now we lie In Flanders fields. Take up our quarrel with the foe: To you from failing hands we throw The torch; be yours to hold it high. If ye break faith with us who die We shall not sleep, though poppies grow In Flanders fields.

10.01.2022 "I was one of the fortunate ones. History records that of all the air crew blokes that went overseas only 51% of us came back." Its been 75 years since the Ger...mans signed an unconditional surrender, bringing war in Europe to an end. The day would become known as Victory in Europe Day. As celebrations erupted across Europe, the mood in Australia was more subdued. Australia remained at war - it would be another few months before Victory in the Pacific could be celebrated. Called up on the day he turned 18, Bundaberg resident Merv McGrane was an air gunner stationed in England. We were privileged to chat with him last year about his experience...

09.01.2022 The Vietnam War was Australias longest military engagement of the 20th century. Almost 60,000 Australians fought in the war and more than 500 lost their lives.... Originally known as Long Tan Day, Vietnam Veterans Day is commemorated on 18 August every year. With the greatest of respect to Vietnam Veterans and all the battles they have fought #LestWeForget

09.01.2022 My apologies for being a day late with this beautiful message once again from the Sub Branch Padre: GDay to our Sub Branch family. As a son, husband, dad and Grandpa I am extremely grateful for my own mother, also the mother of my children and the mothers of my grandchildren. Mums are so many times, the angels who bring care and warmth, understanding and nurture to our children. Today I thank God and I thank mothers for the commitment and sacrificial love they provide to th...eir children. I have experienced the sacrificial love first hand; both that of Jesus Christ as well as the sacrificial love I have received from my own very Godly mother. I have also observed this sacrificial love in so many other situations, not the least in my wife Kerrie and my daughters Michelle and Tracey, and my daughter-in law Brooke. I hope that mothers everywhere are able to sense the deep love you so richly deserve, not only on Mothers Day but every day. Let us not forget all mums, despite the tyranny of COVID19 distancing. So today, it is with great admiration that I wish all mothers a very happy Mothers Day you have all earned it! Without detracting from that, I know that Mothers Day brings sadness to so many folk. I know there is grief through loss that overwhelms on this day and so many others. So today, I want to express deep love, admiration and kindness upon all those who grieve today. May your hearts be held firmly and gently by the God of all love and comfort. God bless you all! With my love, from Padre Dan See more

02.01.2022 Vietnam Veterans Day, 18th July 2020 - update from VVAAQLD https://vvaaqueensland.asn.au//vietnam-veterans-day-18th-/

01.01.2022 UPDATE FROM OUR GENERAL MANAGER We are pleased to hear the announcements yesterday that the Federal and Queensland governments have provided further clarity on ...what the road to our new normal looks like. Whilst dates have been provided for each step, and what can open at each step, here at Kedron-Wavell Services Club we must now await the guidelines that come with each of the 3 steps to ascertain what the Clubs reopen strategy will be. Unfortunately for the near future we will continue to be closed. However, once we have greater insight in to how we will reopen each area of the Club we will advise all our members through our Facebook page and emails. So keep a close eye on our Facebook page! We thank all our loyal members and guests who have continued to support the Club whilst closed. Rest assured we will continue to run our online members draws on Wednesday and Friday nights while closed, as well as live stream our K-Fit class every Wednesday morning. We look forward to welcoming you all back to the Club very soon. Regards Lyndon Broome General Manager

01.01.2022 Update on events within the Kedron Wavell Services Club

01.01.2022 The Run, Walk or Wheel for Remembrance 2020, presented by Rotary Club of Carindale, is off to a great start thanks to the fundraising efforts of one of our part...icipants! A big shout out to Petra, who has already raised almost $900 for our research! She says: "I am hoping I can walk five kilometres for every person who donates to me. Depending on the number it could take me the whole month of five kilometres a day or maybe longer, but that is my plan! "As I walk the journey I hold close in my heart all the people I have companioned as they walked their own story as a return service person. Research does and will make a difference, thats why I am walking. Thank you for your support!" Well done Petra! You can start your journey to Run, Walk or Wheel for Remembrance by getting involved here: https://bit.ly/REMEMBER2020
