17.01.2022 Changes are underway to crack down on financial backers that make the majority of class actions possible for everyday Australians. "At the end of the day, we are victims," Norman Land told A Current Affair. The retiree is seeking compensation after PFAS, a toxic chemical, was found in his ground water supply, believed to have leaked from the nearby ADF base in Townsville.... "I was devastated. It's just thrown all of my retirement plans into complete disarray," Norman said. Norman joined a class action after, he said, his property value had plummeted $50,000 overnight. "I cannot make up that shortfall. I need at least $300,000 to be able to move into a retirement village," he said.

09.01.2022 Since being introduced in Australia 1992, class actions have helped hundreds of thousands of ordinary people receive compensation for being harmed by the actions of corporations or other powerful institutions. These people would never have been able to take on the fight on their own. Class actions helped them band together and win. But now there are calls from big business for class actions to be watered down and wound back. We cant let them win.

Ms Oates said she wept when the judgment was delivered. On Monday, the Morrison governments parliamentary inquiry into class actions will hold its first hearings, which the legal industry is afraid will be used as a pretext for laws to make it harder for people to sue big companies." #KeepCorporationsHonest #SaveClassActions

02.01.2022 ASIC advised Treasury there was a range of tools available to directors who were worried they would be sued by investor class action lawsuits, such as a "due diligence" defence whereby directors could not be sued if they took reasonable steps to ensure the company complied with its obligations. ASIC also played down claims by business about a surge in class action lawsuits. It said there had been only 82 shareholder class actions filed in Australia over 16 years, compared wi...th 441 in the US in 2018 alone. ASIC reiterated its submission to the 2018 Australian Law Reform Commission, noting "the economic significance of fair and efficient capital markets dwarfs any exposure to class action damages". #keepcorporationshonest
