18.01.2022 Justine says Anxiety has a high prevalence in people with epilepsy. However it is frequently under diagnosed and under treated. This can be related to anxiety... about having a seizure which can be a form of trauma or PTSD. People may avoid certain situations where they fear having a seizure, or where they have had a seizure in the past. Some people developed agoraphobia or social phobia due to epilepsy. Anxiety can also be a symptom of an aura, a seizure, or a symptom after a seizure. Panic attacks are a common form of anxiety disorder in people with epilepsy. Some people are mistakenly diagnosed as only having panic attacks, when in fact they their symptoms are caused by epilepsy. Older age of epilepsy onset with increased odds of an anxiety disorder diagnosis. 03.01.2022 This is me during the most difficult challenge of my life. Im smiling but Im in pain and Im struggling. I often do that. Not many people know that I have a daily battle with an invisible illness called epilepsy. To manage this condition I have to carefully balance my life and that means having a strict sleep routine, making sure my diet is healthy and watching that I dont get too stressed, overtired, overheated or dehydrated. So when I set myself this challenge I knew it... would be difficult. I did not predict that in Tasmania the weather would be hot, in the high 20s. At the time of the hike there were bushfires. At times during the walk we could smell the smoke. It was hot. At times we ran out of water and my throat was dry with thirst. The searing sun, which is much hotter in Tassie due to the thinner ozone layer there, was relentless. I prayed for clouds and rain. It was gut wrenchingly hard. I was the slowest in the group. I walked at least an extra hour each day of the 12 hour days walking. I often walked on my own because others were faster, stronger, fitter than me and I didnt expect other people to wait. Because I was the slowest, whenever I caught up to the group (who were having a restbreak) they started again so usually I didnt get to rest. I kept walking. One slow step at a time for 6 days. Dont get me wrong, there were beautiful moments. The scenery was stunning and I will remember moments of connection with others that were inspiring and beautiful. But what I will most remember is how I survived. How I carried that backpack one arduous step at a time. I didnt give up. This is my memory. It reminds me how strong I am. It helps me get through many difficult days and I will treasure it forever.
