16.01.2022 We must carefully manage pasture turnout, roughage and grain intake in horses and ponies that are at risk of developing laminitis or are currently affected. Hor...ses suffering from insulin resistance (IR) and/or Cushing’s Disease as well as horses and ponies with the ‘‘easy keeper’’ phenotype are often overweight or obese. These horses may be persistently hyperinsulinemic and should also be managed carefully with regard to their carbohydrate intake. The following points summarize current advice regarding strategies for avoiding high NSC intakes by horses and ponies at risk for pasture laminitis: Animals predisposed to laminitis should be denied/have restricted access to grass pastures, particularly during the spring and autumn. At other times of the year, limit the amount of turnout time each day (e.g., 13 hours) and turn horses out late at night (after 10:00pm) or early in the morning, removing them from pasture by midmorning at the latest (before 10:00am, because NSC levels are likely to be at their lowest late at night through early morning). Alternatively, limit the size of the available pasture by use of temporary fencing to create small paddocks or use a grazing muzzle. Do not turn horses out onto pasture that has been exposed to low temperatures in conjunction with bright sunlight, such as occurs in the autumn after a flush of growth or on bright cool winter days, because cold temperatures reduce grass growth, resulting in the accumulation of NSC. Many people simply put the horse on a starvation ration and severely limit the horses’ diet of all nutrients. This is one of the worst things you could do as horses still require maintenance energy to function as well as essential amino acids, vitamins and minerals to assist in repairing damage caused by laminitis. At a bare minimum your horse requires approximately 1% of his own body weight as roughage. Ideal roughage sources include native warm season grasses such as Kangaroo or Mitchel grass, Lucerne hay, grass hay and alternative highly digestible fibre sources such as beet pulp (HYGAIN MICRBEET). 15.01.2022 I have only been using Allcare for a short time, and have just finished my first batch. I started using Allcare hoping to find a product to replace multiple su...pplements and reduce costs. 05.01.2022 Sometimes as a trainer, you question your ability on bad days. You get extremely critical of yourself. From now on when I question myself I’m gonna look back on this run! Last weekend my understudy Ciara, had an accident on course which led to her horse being injured and unable to run at this weekend’s event. She’s been doing so well all year for what little events that we have had and my heart just sank for her, to think that she wouldn’t be able to compete in her junior e...vent. On a bit of a whim I offered her my little mare Slider, who hasn’t been ridden for goodness knows how many months (I have actually almost put her in foal a dozen times due to no competitions) and she has been to 1 competition in the last 15 months. Three days ago I pulled her out of the paddock, gave her a few rides for Ciara to try and help keep her points tally up, thinking she might pick up a few points in the divisions. Certainly didn’t expect today’s happenings to occur. Yesterday Ciara ran 1st in the 2nd division, but today she came out and turn the tables. By only 0.003 of a second she ran 2nd in the 1st division. It doesn’t only make me proud as a coach to see that one of my girls can jump on any old horse and make a run, but it also makes me proud to think that as a breeder and a trainer my horses come out and make an honest decent run regardless of the fitness level or how many times they have been ridden. This is what happens when you give them the right start. I am currently running a horse that has had numerous owners and I’m trying to undo everything that’s been done way too hard and fast in his past life. I will get there, and I’m gonna have my wins and I’m gonna have my failures with him, but every time I have a failure I’m gonna look back at this run and see what I have created within this mare. 03.01.2022 The lactating mare has the highest nutrient requirements of any horse on the farm. To produce milk and to repair the reproductive tract in preparation for futur...e pregnancy, the mare requires substantial amounts of energy, protein, calcium and phosphorus. To maintain both adequate milk production and body condition, lactating mares will often need to be fed substantial amounts of grain and high quality forage. Without adequate energy (calorie) intake, mares will lose body weight and may have problems conceiving. The most common feeding mistake made with lactating mares is to underfeed them.
