23.01.2022 Enjoying my last harah! After this weekend I shall be cutting all dairy & wheat from my diet. I’ve minimised my consumption over the years but even my love affair with the baked puddings from Baked on 44 have to stop. Please let me in on any favourite gluten, dairy & egg free tips & products.

19.01.2022 Details from the telephone pole mural I was working on today.

19.01.2022 Pups chilling by the fan. I’ve had heaps of enquires lately for pet portraits so thought I’d brush up on some skills such as rendering fur, eyes & cute moist noses. I couldn’t resist taking a photo when Trevor my very woolly schnauzer lay in front of these works in progress I had sitting in front of the fan to dry.

16.01.2022 Wow, I’m shocked that people actually look at my posts. Thanks to those that commented on yesterday’s post it’s encouraging to see that this little social experiment is worth persevering with. I’d appreciate any advice (or links) on how to do this social media thing properly ie hash tags, etiquette, suggested topics. Today’s image is of my water colour palette that I mixed using only 3 tubes/colours in preparation for a class I’m taking on the weekend with Andrea Chapman. ...I’ve been using watercolour for 20 years & I still gain incredible benefit in ongoing training. Andrea is a generous teacher & her classes are always great fun. Our personal styles are very different but I have a healthy respect for Andrea’s more traditional technique & subject matter. I’ll have to work out how to link to her profile as she paints the most glorious Australian landscapes. See more

14.01.2022 It was a lovely surprise to see one of my artworks at the Botanical Gardens today. I was playing with my young friend Izzy & stumbled on this illustration of a cormorant from 2 years ago. This work is one of over a dozen illustrations of local flora & fauna I did for the Rockhampton City Councils Sustainability Department. The whole series was used in the infographics at Springers Lagoon Reserve. Interested in a A3 fine art quality print or an original from this series please get in contact.

13.01.2022 This dude isn’t finished yet so I figured I’d do a studio/progress shot for today’s post. This is out of character work for me as I normally focus on line work & consider my messy descriptive lines my signature style. I’m intentionally trying to work with just the 2 brushes pictured. In this I was inspired by the work of another local artist Andrea Chapman. Andrea paints spectacular Australian landscapes in a traditional style except for a few personal tweaks, namely she us...es mostly flat brushes, pops of abrasive colour that create striking contrast in her works & has a gloriously dramatic use of tone. Of late I’m attempting to use less straight out of the tube colours & to mix my own based on my own version of the printer cartridge principle of yellow, magenta & cyan. This process started by attending a water colour workshop on painting florals with Andrea that has reignited my love of colour theory & resulted in countless goggle rabbit holes. I’m a huge believer in life long learning (there’s masses of literature on its benefits for health & wellbeing) so am always try to challenge myself & broaden my practice. I’m trying to get smarter & faster in my painting technique hence the lack of blending & deliberate layering of block colours & glazes. triggered by the many murals I’ve been doing in the scorching Australian heat & sun over the last year. I’m a perfectionist & am finding this doesn’t serve me well when working out doors. Also I’m finding the exterior paints available in my regional location don’t mix well & tend to muddy so layers of solid colour are the answer. I’d love recommendations on vibrant exterior brands of paint. Also note my journal in the background which is my constant companion. Its a vital tool for any artist & I churn through them. It’s a place to create order of my chaos, by its nature it chronologically references my creative & personal development. I spent years trialing & developing a system that works for me & now only have one book at a time for all aspects of my life instead of lots of books for a diary, quotes, sketches, inspiration etc. This page shows the colour wheel created with just 3tubes. 11.01.2022 Tonight post is the most recent images I have from the creative class I facilitate each Monday at Compass House. Compass Houses vision is to assist individuals in achieving their best possible version of personal and emotional wellbeing, whilst living with, or recovering from, physical, sensory, cognitive and psychosocial disability (quote from their website). The last few weeks we have focused on colour mixing, creating harmony & contrast with colour & paint application.

07.01.2022 My work from today’s session with Andrea Chapman. Creativity is a life long enquiry. I graduated from art college over 20years ago & have constantly made art since but never tire of challenging myself & learning new skills. Andrea is a generous teacher with an astute eye who gives me invaluable feedback. I don’t aspire to paint like her (that’s not my journey) instead I integrate the learnings from her classes into my own practice/style.

02.01.2022 Loving how loose & relaxed these works are. They were an absolute pleasure to produce as they just flowed out of me.

02.01.2022 Building layers of transparent colour in preparation for some collage. Lately I’ve started to feel a tad contrived in my drawing & painting so hoping a bit of paper play will help. Plus collage will be a excellent progression in the exploration of colour for Monday’s class. I try to minimise my consumption & this is a fantastic way to reuse old works & make use of random paper off cuts. Do you have a bunch of old papers(sketches, old works, offcuts) or paints lying around? I’d gratefully take them off your hands. Come play with me.

01.01.2022 This painting still needs a few tweaks . . . . but it’s almost there. It’s my piece from a water colour class attended today by Andrea Chapman. Andrea teaches traditional WC techniques & although I’ve been using WC for over 20years among countless other mediums & am not personally interested in perusing that style in my own practice I find massive benefit in ongoing learning. Andreas classes are a hoot (thanks for the delicious chocolates ) so check her out online & book via her website if interested. Nothing pushes my own practice more (or is as deliciously frustrating) as getting out of my comfort zone & trying to disregard my established ways of working.
