05.01.2022 SAINT JOSEPH - HEAD OF THE HOLY FAMILY As the Church celebrates the feast day of St Joseph in March, a little about the life and character of this holy man, who... was the head of the holy family. Much has been written and said about the life of Our Blessed Virgin Mother, and rightly so, but often the role and life of St Joseph, as a member of the Holy Family, is left unmentioned. St Joseph was a descendant of the royal house of David, who was reduced to obscurity, and lived a poor and humble life. Despite this he was endowed with divine favours to prepare him for the fulfillment of his vocation - to be the Head of the Holy Family. To give an indication of the magnitude of the role which this great man fulfilled, I will highlight some of the glorious titles which he held. In order to accomplish these in the manner desired by God, he received special graces to equip him with the virtue and quality required. These titles are: 1. The Spouse of Our Lady If indeed anybody could be the worthy spouse of her. St Matthew considered this such a worthy title, for he could say nothing higher of him than to call him ‘...Joseph the husband of Mary’ (Matt I.16). 2. The Father of Jesus Christ He was the father of Jesus Christ, and Our Lady did not hesitate to give him this title; thus when she found the Child Jesus in the temple, she said to Him: ‘Thy father and I have sought thee sorrowing.’(St Luke ii. 48). 3. The Representative of God the Father on Earth He was given the honour of paternity to the Incarnate Word (Jesus Christ). In communicating this honour of Father to St Joseph, God the Father also gave him a father’s heart - that is his authority, the solicitude and the love of a father. What a great favour is this! God has entrusted to St Joseph what is most dear to Him - His only Begotten Son. To what heights of virtue must he have attained to have made himself worthy of such an honour. 4. Head of the Holy family Our Lady in giving Joseph her hand also gave her heart. Never has a wife loved her husband so tenderly, so ardently, nor revere him so profoundly. St Joseph was the superior of them, whose submission to him was so complete, that they rendered all possible respect and obedience (Luke ii. 48). 5. The Nourisher of Jesus and Mary He was a true father to that family, he gained their bread by the labour of his hands and the sweat of his brow. What an honour it is to nourish Him who nourishes the whole world, to give bread to Our Lord who provides all for everyone. 6. He is the Guardian of the Child Jesus The eternal word has cast himself into the hands of Joseph, His only protector, defender and supporter. 7. The Treasurer of the Saviour It could be said that Joseph, more than any other man is the faithful and wise servant, whom God has entrusted as grand master of His family, to whose hands He has committed all His treasures, the government of all His possessions.’ What confidence does this office imply! 8. The saviour of the Saviour Joseph had the honour of preserving the Divine Infant from the fury of King Herod. (Matt. ii. 13,14). 9. The Master of his Master Jesus was like an apprentice in the workshop of Joseph, who taught Him to work as a carpenter, so that everyone said of Jesus ‘Is not this the carpenter’s son, a carpenter himself?’ There are also more titles such as Chaste Guardian of the Virgin, Joseph most Just, Strong, Prudent, Obedient, Faithful etc which I cannot elaborate on at the moment. St Joseph (besides Our Lady) is more exalted than any other in the Church. The Apostles were only the servants of Jesus Himself, but Joseph was His father. St Joseph has singular perogatives above all other men, for he was the first to contemplate the admirable humanity of Our Lord Jesus, the first to adore Him, to touch Him and to dwell with Him, to serve Him, to nourish Him, to hear Him speak and to be enlightened by His divine instructions. He is the first confessor to the faith, since he first suffered for the love of Jesus, forsaking his home and country to fly with Him to Egypt. The first Apostle making the Messiahs known to men, by announcing Him in Egypt; in a word, the first and most holiest Christian man and the first model for the children of the Church. All these distinctions give St Joseph pre-eminence over all other saints.

01.01.2022 Remembering all those legends who ploughed the seas to the unknown land looking for a better future and arrived at what we call now home. To those who worked hard to create a soft landing for the future generations and some who are still toiling till now, to all, we raise our hats and cheer them on and ask the Lord Jesus to keep them in good health and to those who have left us we remember you every day and we raise our prayers for the repose of your souls in the abode of our Heavenly Father.
