24.01.2022 Unusual path for a cyclone - please stay safe and up to date with current warnings if you’re in the Kalbarri Area!
22.01.2022 Great article in the Broome Advertiser this week! Full transcript below Broome Advertiser Former candidate for the Kimberley Geoff Haerewa, who was one of only... two Liberal candidates to have a first preference swing in his favour, says he’ll continue to hold the State Government to account. Mr Haerewa, a Derby local and Shire president, saw the biggest first preference swing towards him of any Liberal candidate (3.1 per cent) in the landslide election where his party picked up just two seats compared to Labor’s 53 and the Nationals’ four. Only one other candidate from the party saw a first preference swing towards them Albany’s Scott Leary (0.8 per cent). Now, Mr Haerewa said he would continue to be a voice for the region and ensure issues he campaigned on would be addressed. Unfortunately I didn’t win, however the knowledge I’ve gained throughout the campaign has really helped me understand many more issues facing the region, he said. My future is in my role as Shire president, and I’ll give 110 per cent in that. It’s a bit early to say whether I’ll run (for State) again, but it’s really been a journey I’ve enjoyed and I will be continuing to make sure the Government treats the Kimberley well over the next four years. Congratulations to Divina and to the Labor Party, it was a historic landslide, but I am proud of our campaign and the fact we saw an increase in voter support. Mr Haerewa campaigned on a hardline approach to youth crime, promising constituents safe spaces for police to drop children they find wandering at night and a boost to police resources in the region. Newly elected Kimberley MLA Divina D’Anna succeeds Josie Farrer, who announced she would retire from politics in late 2020. The seat has traditionally been a Labor stronghold with a margin of 13.1 per cent making it Labor’s safest country seat heading into the election. Ms D’Anna became the fourth consecutive Indigenous representative for the region with 71.5 per cent of the two party preferred vote. I didn’t win, however the knowledge I’ve gained throughout the campaign has really helped me understand many more issues facing the region.
