25.01.2022 Some big ideas to get us thinking as we face another day of social isolation in Ipswich. Re-thinking the role of government for the present day. https://www.theguardian.com//hope-in-the-time-of-coronavir

24.01.2022 I have heard two complaints about Council candidates generally that I want to respond to. 1. They are lazy because they have not got their message out. 2. They are just looking for a cushy job. My responses:... 1. The new 4 Divisions (previously 10) are huge. I know all the candidates are feeling this so let me give you my experience. I have door-knocked around 4000 houses over the last month, but there are 16,000 houses in the Division. Some candidates like to stand by busy roads and wave at traffic. I prefer to try and reach people through the social media. 2. Please consider that most of the candidates in this election are truly independent and totally self-funded. Some candidates are blowing their life's savings because they believe in Ipswich and want a shot at making a difference. There are easier ways to land a cushy job. #freshstart #icc2020election

19.01.2022 Last day of pre-polling and half of Qld voters have already voted! Even in the midst of the Corona-angst people in Ipswich are taking this Council election seriously. I am delighted to have had a few enterprising residents call me via Facebook Campaign page Messenger chat to ask me more about myself. Please don't hesitate if you want to chat before you vote. #icc2020election #FreshStart

18.01.2022 The queue this morning outside Cenerlink. The immediate health crisis is overshadowing the emerging financial crisis. The virus will be finished in a few months but how long did the economy take to recover after the global economic meltdown of 2009? This is comparable, maybe worse. All levels of government will need to be involved in helping people get through this. First message - don't despair! We are all in this together.

17.01.2022 If, like me, you felt a deep sense of foreboding at the sight of empty supermarket shelves, I recommend this thoughtful interview between comedian Russell Brand and psychologist Gabor Mate. https://youtu.be/7FEoQOurpGo

15.01.2022 A lot of people have commented that the party affiliations of the candidates are not clear so here are the party affiliations (previous and current) of the Division 1 Candidates in the order they will appear on the ballot paper. The source for this is the candidates' responses to the Queensland Time Candidates Q&A 02/03/2020. Will JANKOVIC Running as Independent Party affiliations: none... SIMON INGRAM Running as Independent Party affiliations: LNP (current member) SHEILA IRELAND Running as Independent Party affiliations: none JACOB MADSEN Running as Independent Party affiliations: ALP (current member) JIM THOMPSON Running as Independent Party affiliations: none CONNY TURNI Running as Independent Party affiliations: none KENDAL NEWMAN Running as Independent Party affiliations: none PYE AUGUSTINE Running as Independent Party affiliations: ALP (current member)

14.01.2022 Polling Day is here and I just want to take the opportunity to say to my fellow candidates in Division 1. It has been an honour running beside/against you and you have all conducted yourselves with professionalism and integrity. Whatever happens today I wish you all well.

14.01.2022 I am a Candidate for Ipswich Council Div 1. I am a great believer in the positive social power of communities of engagement, but I have definitely been challenged to think beyond my own experience in this campaign. Chris, of Redbank Plains, is one of hundreds of people who are part of the Ipswich Gel Ball community, he plays, umpires, 3d prints, swaps mod ideas, and engages in the politics of his passion. Three questions I want to throw out today.... 1. What do you think of the Gel Ball community? 2. What communities of engagement do you participate in? (sport, art, 4WD, motorcycles, book club, gardening, choir, environmental, ...) 3. What could Council do to support your community of engagement.

13.01.2022 Some thoughts about big projects and Advocacy. Since I have focused my campaign on thinking bigger, it is not surprising I often get asked how Council can fund big projects, so I want to say something about the Council's role in advocacy to State and Federal governments. As well as the gross (in some cases criminal) financial mismanagement of the previous Ipswich Council, it seems their record of advocacy to State Gov in particular was also not great. ... In some cases the Ipswich submissions never stood a chance of progressing with State funding because they were amateurish, ego-driven, and they did not conform to the State's 3-level submission framework. One of the last acts of the Council Interim Administrator was to recruit a Senior Advocacy Manager, with decades of experience in Qld treasury. This is a new position in ICC and may prove to be one of the most significant in terms of legacy. With coordination from the Senior Advocacy Manager and a Council that conducts itself with professionalism and integrity I believe Ipswich can do much better at securing State and Fed support than it has in the past. I know all this because I met with the Interim Administrator and asked him. I found his answers very informative and helped me get an understanding of the steps required to move forward on big projects.. The minutes of our meeting are on the Council website - link below. https://www.ipswich.qld.gov.au//NEWMAN,-Kendall-IA-Declare There's a bunch of meeting minutes with other candidates also on the ICC website. Some of them make interesting reading if you like that sort of thing. :) Also, terms I am using like amateurish and ego-driven are my opinions, not part of the meeting and discussion

12.01.2022 To roll back the run on rolls within the electorate roll, I will be offering either the Wuhan Shake or the Elbow Bump, but NOT the Iranian Variation. Candidate for Division 1 #Ipswich2020

08.01.2022 Democratic process. I came across these signs all taken down at Flinders View this morning, so I put them back up again. I would like to think my fellow candidates and their supporters would do the same for me. Democratic process right?

04.01.2022 The UK Council elections scheduled for May 22 have been postponed for 1 year. I'm sure Electoral Commission Qld is watching this and I hope also considering reopening the postal/phone voting. https://www.theguardian.com//local-london-mayoral-election

02.01.2022 My polling day prediction: The deciders will be the undecided. Ipswich Council polling day approaches on Saturday, 28th March, and based on people I speak to, I suspect the majority will head off to vote still undecided. So much comes down to the nice smile of the people handing out the how to vote cards. The difficulty all the new and truly independent candidates are facing is how to man the all-important polling booths on the day. ... I urge everyone who cares and has an opinion to get involved. Help a candidate you like with a few hours on polling day.

01.01.2022 From yesterday's count it is now clear the new Ipswich Division 1 Councillors are Jacob Madsen and Sheila Ireland. Congratulations to both of you. Wishing you wisdom and success as we all rebuild our city even in the midst of the current devastating crisis.
