25.01.2022 Counting down the days to our big open garden weekend here in Sheffield - Kentish GardenFEST. We have six gardens open over the weekend of November 28-29, 10-4. To get started head to Sheffield to buy your tickets and pick up the garden map and information sheet. Tickets are available from The Epicurean Cafe at 68-72 Main Street Sheffield over the weekend and valid for both days. You'll find us in the courtyard. Look forward to seeing you over the weekend! Roses, clematis, perennials and more in full blooom.

25.01.2022 Three cheers for the barbecue team - hard at work under the birch trees in the little park in Barrington preparing our Christmas feast for the party last Sunday: Kirk, Brian, Brian and Peter on hand (Richie and his Weber out of view). We had sausages, marinated chicken wings, bacon and onion (sliced by Dean Sparrow who decided it wasn't a barbie without onion).

24.01.2022 For those who enjoy the wonderful bush walks around this area - an opportunity to give back to the people who are opening up more walks!

23.01.2022 Looking forward to Thursday's meeting at Barrington Hall with guest speaker Noel Button on hellebores. Don't forget to bring some cash to buy some of the perennial plants he'll bring to sell and don't forget the meeting has been relocated to Barrington Hall!!!! 6.30pm.

23.01.2022 Despite the lashing rain and thunderstorms overnight we've put on a spectacular FlowerFEST 2021 in the Sheffield Town Hall. Doors open again tomorrow (Sunday) at 10am. See you there. And congratulations Marj Hutchison for winning Grand Champion with a rescued begonia now a lovely 'treet'.

22.01.2022 This should be lovely!

22.01.2022 Looking out her kitchen window on this dull grey day, Julie Button says she saw all the different daffodils and wondered how many there were. 15 is the answer. Here they are. Aren't they lovely?

22.01.2022 We had a wonderful get together last night with guest speaker Noel Button from Bonnie Banks Nursery who brought a truckload (literally) of wonderful perennials. The new venue at Barrington Hall looked fabulous full of plants. Thanks everyone for coming along and making it such a great night.

22.01.2022 Angus Stewart is our guest speaker next Thursday evening at Barrington Hall. Here are some of the kangaroo paws he has bred for gardens and landscaping. For more details see our Event details.

22.01.2022 Dean and Heather Sparrow's garden at Nook is part of GardenFEST - lots of roses, clematis and perennials in flower and plants for sales.

21.01.2022 Heather and Peter Male are getting their garden at Sheffield with glorious views of Mt Roland ready for GardenFEST in just over a week's time. The pink dogwood is in flower! Tickets for GardenFEST are on sale over the open week only from The Epicurean Cafe at 68-72 Main Street, Sheffield - opposite the RSL. We'll be in the courtyard. Plenty of tickets available!

20.01.2022 Cold and windy with a touch of snow! Snowdrops and snowflakes rescued from the garden, popped in vases and standing on my windowsill. The snowdrop is the larger flower on the right!

19.01.2022 Another lovely reminder of our open weekend last weekend - spot the blue wren among the geums in Dean and Heather Sparrow's garden at Nook. Photo Bruce Hutchison.

19.01.2022 Bruce Hutchison capture Sheffield FlowerFEST to perfection with his talented photographer's eye.

18.01.2022 A great story about a local NW Tasmanian garden - Lynwood Cottage at Ulverstone in Garden Australia magazine. We visited it with the garden club a few years ago! Lynette Wood is a marvellous gardener.

18.01.2022 Looking forward to our next KGC event - a hazelnut harvest and picnic at Mount Roland Hazelnuts in Sheffield on Sunday. We are going to harvest hazelnuts (which means gathering them from the ground) and there's also an opportunity to sort them (which is a standing up job). This event was cancelled last year due to the COVID lockdown but is even more important this year as labour is short as it is for many growers. They usually rely on WWOOFERS - willing workers on organic farms - who are not around this year. After the hard work we will picnic with this glorious view. If you are interested in coming along, please contact me (message or via our website) for more information!

18.01.2022 Looks like a lovely walk!

17.01.2022 We had an array of delicious contributions to our harvest supper last week. Thanks to everyone for coming along and making it such a fun evening. We also launched our KGC member's Hobart tour itinerary for October 29-31. Please DM me if you are interested in a copy.

15.01.2022 Last day of summer - what's flowering in your garden? Roses, hydrangeas, dahlias by the dozen, windflowers (Japanese anemones) and this beautiful pink sedum that the bumble bees just love are all out here in Barrington but the autumn colour is creeping in to the sycamore and berberis already!

15.01.2022 Local Peter Cocker was our guest speaker at last night's meeting. He told a fabulous story of his ancestor, Joseph Cocker a potato farmer and inventor, from Lower Barrington, who spent most of his life trying to patent and sell his agricultural inventions. He never got rich but he left an amazng legacy including a precious scale model of an early potato digger and a very impressive US patent from 1893. He also invented a system for on tap hot water which was still in use in the Cocker's house in the 1970s and generated electricty from methane.

14.01.2022 Look at these wonderful displays of camellia flowers - arranged by Sue Tapping. We can't visit as it is in NSW but some great tips!

13.01.2022 Put a visit to the Tasmanian Arboretum at Eugenana on your must visit list even in winter. These photos snapped today by our Queensland member Lee Thompson, who is enjoying her first Tassie winter. She reports massed hellebores, daffodils and the flowering quince in bloom.

13.01.2022 Special offer! Members Tony and Carol Wright have got their hands on some of those tall, lidded buckets that are ideal for garden waste, carrying tools etc. As a KGC fundraiser, Tony is selling them for $2.50 each. Call Tony on 0477 011 612 if you want to pick one up (or two or three or four!). He'll also bring them to the next meeting.

13.01.2022 Did anyone else notice the handy weed list on the latest rates notice? Long list of weeds in Kentish - includes quite a few garden plants including foxglove, crocosmia, holly and more.

13.01.2022 Gladiolus from FlowerFEST 2021 - photo Bruce Hutchison.

12.01.2022 Wet out today but the Kerria japonica at my window is still looking great! Would you believe it is in the rose family? The flowers do look like small double yellow roses but no perfume.

11.01.2022 Spring compilation: kerria, magnolia, nigella, daffodil and waratah

10.01.2022 Wonderful day today harvesting hazelnuts with a view at Mt Roland Hazelnuts! We harvested 250kg today, which was a record for the farm.

09.01.2022 More views of FlowerFEST 2021 - flowers galore from sunflowers to liliums and roses.

09.01.2022 Today is the first day of spring and also, Wattle Day. Kaye Kingham is celebrating by enjoying the black wattles out in her garden. Here's a pic.

09.01.2022 Just saw this item in the trade news. This is a variety of Australian native paper daisy and it has won gold in the trials in the US. Here's a link to more shots: https://mailchi.mp/su/granvia-gold-shines-in-summer-trials

09.01.2022 For those who missed our pre-meeting garden visit to Nook here's a lovely shot of the garden around the house bathed in late autumn sunlight. The netted vegie, fruit and picking gardens were also inspirational. A truly wonderful garden and even more amazing that it is only two years old (bar some of the mature trees).

07.01.2022 Don't let the rain put you off coming along to our talk with Angus Stewart on Thursday evening from 7.30pm at Barrington Hall in Barrington. This is one of Angus's landscape series kangaroo paws - Landscape Lilac.

07.01.2022 Some shots of the roses from around the garden this morning!

07.01.2022 We had a fabulous GardenFEST weekend - despite some rain and wind. Thank you to the garden owners and all the visitors - all 500 from across the state! Here are some shots from the weekend which show just how beautiful the weekend was and how much variety there is in our Kentish gardens. The photos were taken by our talented local photographer Bruce Hutchison.

06.01.2022 Our next meeting is tomorrow (Thursday) at Barrington Hall with guest speaker Peter Cocker about the early potato days and harvester developed here by his family. We've a pre-garden visit - if you are interested in coming along and are not a member, message me for more details. These lovely roses are from Lyn's garden that we are seeing tomorrow.

06.01.2022 We distributed some of the leftover flowers to the Blacksmith Gallery and to Tandara! Nothing goes to waste from FlowerFEST.

06.01.2022 Something to think about!!

04.01.2022 We drew the winning raffle ticket and eventually got the right winner!

02.01.2022 Our next meeting - this coming Thursday April 8 - is our Harvest Supper. Bring food to share made from your own homegrown or local produce. I am bringing potato, zucchini soup with garlic bread and may attempt Greg's hazelnut, chocolate and orange cake (we have been gathering hazelnuts from our trees). What are you bringing?

01.01.2022 How amazing are these colourful cauliflowers! Is anyone growing yellow or purple caulies? If you are, please share a pic!

01.01.2022 I thought we did a lovely job decorating Barrington Hall for our Christmas Party yesterday then today I saw Karl Gercen's amazing decorations - it is Longwood Gardens in Philadelphia with a mega budget but WOW something to aspire too.
