22.01.2022 These quilt tops were made in last weekends retreat - I love hosting ladies for retreats - looking forward to 2021 So pleased everyone was thrilled with their quilts

22.01.2022 Ok well I have been a bit slack with posting the next lot of instructions- some people have worked it out themselves Once you have completed 3 sections of the quilt as per previous instructions it is now time to make 3 more sections this time you need to run the diagonal squares in the opposite direction to the first 3 sections. So to do that you need to take the square off the top of the second row nd put it on the bottom of that stripe - then for the 3 row you will take of...f the first 2 squares and attach them to the bottom of the row and so on. Just like you did with the other sections only instead of the bottom squares coming to the top it is the other way around. This will create the diagonal going in the opposite direction You will need to make 3 more sections in this direction Kim has been very clever and sent me this photo of her 6 sections completed - all she needs to do is join the sections together and she will have her quilt top - thanks for sharing it with me Kim - I absolutely love all your colours See more

21.01.2022 It was so very nice having these ladies here for a retreat weekend- so good to have them back after having to cancel earlier in the year due to lockdown I love all your quilts - looking forward to seeing you back in May I will share the others later

19.01.2022 Cut this kit for a lady the other day - ocean waves for her coastal theme Fingers crossed she loves it

17.01.2022 Now that you have 7 sections from 5 different groups of fabric - I want you to take one from each pile - now to work out an order - don’t think too much about the order - I now want you to sew these together joining all 42 squares into one long strip Then repeat for the remaining 6 sections from each group THEY MUST ALL BE JOINED IN THE SAME ORDER - You will have 7 strips x 42 squares all in identical order.

16.01.2022 Next step for my scrappy quilt Once all your strips are together as stated in previous post you now need to cross cut these 5 groups into 2 & 1/2 strips - aim to cut 7 strips from each group of strips - depending on your widths You May be able to cut another but I have only used 7 - across each set of strips I know you may think it would be easier if you ironed the strips first but please don’t Tip for cutting if you are using a 6 & 1/2 ruler flip your ruler around so you... are actually using the solid 4 line - it is so much easier to line a solid line up along your fabric then the broken 1/2 line Once cut Pin each set of 7 together ready for the next step I will be back first thing in the morning with the next step for those who will have time to sew over the weekend See more

16.01.2022 Thanks for allowing me to share your quilt Jenny - this one is only 32 squares down and only 4 sections across a very scrappy boy quilt - looks great -

15.01.2022 Hi everyone, last Tuesday I shared an old quilt of mine with those ladies in my weekly Tuesday class and we decided that this pattern would be our next project - so I have decided to share my instructions with all those out there who follow me here on Facebook - it’s a fabulous scrappy quilt - great for all those scrappy 2 & 1/2 strips you all might have in your stash - or you can start to cut them. The 2 quilts pictured were made in one of my weekend workshops back 20 year...s ago, thanks Margaret for bringing yours in today, mine was all made out of Debbie Mumm fabrics for those who remember her fabulous collections. I started cutting strips today for my next quilt. All random strips of scraps I have had in a basket plus a few ring in’s, some of them Iam sure have been in my stash for at least 20 years. So if you would like to join in with this quilt - start cutting - we will start sewing in class next Tuesday September 1, and I will share step by step instructions and photos here on this page next Tuesday evening Ps - you will need approximately 126 strips of different fabrics depending on the size you would like to make - 126 strips will give you a quilt approximately 80 x 80 Strips need to be cut in half on the fold so they measure approximately 20 x 2 & 1/2 - if you have smaller pieces you would like to use you can use them so long as they measure up to 20 in total If you would like to join in with us please leave a comment it will be fun to see who joins in Kerry See more

14.01.2022 Sorry to all those waiting patiently for the next step - I was going to post them yesterday morning but the beautiful spring weather dragged me outside and the rest is history. I love spending time in my garden. So here are the instructions for the next step Now that you have 7 strips all identical with 42 different squares - I want you to lay all 7 strips down on the floor or if you are lucky enough to have a design wall then pop them up there. Now I want you to put a pin in... the top square on the strip on the left - this will make this strip as the first strip - so you only ever sew one row to this strip Now with the second strip I want you to unpick the square off the bottom and bring it to the top - sew it to the top square - photo 1 Now the bottom fabric becomes the top fabric for the second row Stitch row one and two together- but before you start you might like to press all the seams in row one in one direction and then press all the seams in row 2 in the opposite direction - you can sew without pressing but it is totally up to you. Please try and have a go at sewing with out pinning, it is so much quicker Watch the small video attached to the next post - Facebook won’t let me pop it in this post Please don’t over stress if your seams aren’t perfect - the more you un pick the more you stretch fabric - remember the Amish believe that hand made items don’t need to be perfect because God is the only one who is perfect. Press the seam between rows one and two in one direction Then repeat these steps with the third row except this time you are taking the bottom 2 squares off and moving them to the top - always joining the same fabric to the original first fabric Row 3 is pressed in the same direction as row one This creates the diagonal flow of the fabrics Continue repeating these steps moving an extra square each time so once you get to joining Row seven on you will be taking 6 squares off the bottom and joining to the top Once you have all seven rows joined together you now have section one of the quilt. It should look like photo number 3 - only in your own fabrics Please sing out if you need any help - Iam always here to help, you can always send me a photo of your work if you need me to check on anything Looking forward to seeing lots of section ones soon Kerry See more

13.01.2022 It has been so wonderful seeing and hearing feed back from those who have been sewing along with this scrappy quilt For those who have managed to complete one full section of the quilt - then the good news is that you just need to repeat the whole process and make 2 more sections just like the first. There is no need to think about what fabrics you have used in the first section - nothing needs to match up So happy sewing on the next 2 sections I will be back in a couple of... days to share the next step. I look forward to seeing all the progress I have been sewing this quilt using my mother’s original Singer sewing machine - loving the journey with her by my side See more

13.01.2022 Thanks Kerry Swain - enjoying the process so far.

13.01.2022 I have enjoyed this journey so much, it has felt so good making time to cut up scraps and sew them together to make this stunning scrappy quilt It is far from perfect but a lot of these scraps bring back great memories of previous quilting projects over the past 30 years. Hopefully one day it will be an heirloom for my family to cherish. Thank you to all those that have been sewing along I look forward to seeing them all come together

11.01.2022 Well done Judith Mitchell your quilt looks fabulous- so pleased you were able to follow my online instructions - how are all those other quilts going out there - I look forward to seeing lots of photos

07.01.2022 Wow great to see all those ladies who are interested in joining along with the scrappy quilt. First step is to start cutting 2 & 1/2 strips by the width of fabric - then cutting them in half across the fold - the full quilt will use 126 full strips or 252 - half strips You could also use fat quarters, strips cut will be equal to half the full strip, you might even have a jelly roll or 2 or 3 that would work, that would save you cutting Here are some of the strips I have cut... ready to sew A whole mix of colours patterns etc, try and go scrappy and don’t try and match colours Remember quilts originally were made from clothing scraps and anything and everything was used together. PS - stacked these like this so I could see what fabrics I had used and also easy to count See more

06.01.2022 Hi everyone, for those who have decided to join in the fun of this scrappy quilt and who have cut their strips then here we go For those that are still thinking about it follow along and join in anytime, my Tuesday ladies had fun sewing today, these instructions will stay here so if you want to come back anytime in the future you will just have to scroll back to fine each step I will just say that these are my instructions- this is how I have decided to make this quilt, there... are many different patchwork rules that are all meant to be broken at time to time - and guest what I have always been good at breaking rules - You need to collect 42 of the half strips for section one - that’s what we are working on here Once you have cut your strips and have 42 x approx 20 x 2 & 1/2 You will need to sew them together I started by sewing them all in pairs - down the long sides - without thinking about which 2 I was sewing together - remember it is a scrappy quilt so don’t worry yourself sick over which fabrics go together - by doing this you can flag or chain them into your machine - this saves heaps of time and heaps of thread Then join the pairs together to make 4 strips - then join the 4’s together into groups of 8 - then add your extra 2 strips to one of the groups of 8 You should now have 4 x groups of 8 and 1 x group of 10 strips DO NOT IRON THE STRIPS AT THIS STAGE - I find it much easier not to iron the strips at this stage Dont worry if your fabrics are all not the same length - they won’t be - just try and line them up on one end I will be back tomorrow to share the next step Ps if you have any questions leave a comment and I will answer you as soon as I can - someone else might have the same question so check the comments before asking See more
