21.01.2022 Have a small business, find record keeping complicated? Here's some helpful tips for good record keeping. 1. Obtain valid tax invoices for all purchases that include GST 2. Keep accurate records of all sales and purchases 3. Store a copy of all records electronically, including a system backup in case of damage to hard copies 4. Keep records that contain enough information to calculate and support the amounts claimed on their BAS... 5. retain all tax invoices and other GST records for five years. Here's a link to a 'record keeping evaluation tool' that may be useful. https://www.ato.gov.au/calculato/record-keeping-evaluation/

21.01.2022 To all our wonderful friends, family and clients. There may be a little confusion over our Facebook page not showing our New name. We would like to let you know we are in the process of changing this. You will soon see our name as Atom Accounting & Taxation.

21.01.2022 The ATO’s latest weapon is the data-matching of utility records (such as electricity and gas meters) against rental properties that are claimed to be unoccupied, to test if landlords are telling the truth that the property is available for rent. To recap, rental property owners can only claim deductions for their expenses if their property is being rented by tenants or it is available for rent. If the rent declared in your tax return is substantially down as you did not have ...a tenant, the ATO will ask questions if your electricity bill does not reflect this. If your bill is high because you were living in the property, then don’t forget to inform your Tax Agent who will apportion all your rental costs accordingly (only claim them for the period where your property was being rented or available for rent).

You may want to consider if you’ll need to pay fringe benefits tax (FBT) when rewarding your employees with gifts or parties this Christmas.... 12.01.2022 Are you a Truck Driver? or know a Truck Driver? Here's an important update on Truck drivers' reasonable amounts for travel. Following detailed consultation with the transport industry, the ATO has amended their determination for travel expenses for truck drivers to provide separate reasonable travel allowance expense amounts for breakfast, lunch and dinner for employee truck drivers for the 2017/18 income year. The reasonable amount for travel expenses (excluding accommodatio...n) of employee truck drivers who have received a travel allowance and who are required to sleep away from home was originally reduced for 2017/18 to a total of $55.30 per day, but this daily rate has now been replaced with the following amounts for all domestic travel destinations for the 2017/18 income year: Breakfast - $24.25 Lunch - $27.65 Dinner - $47.70 The amounts for each of these meal breaks are separate and cannot be aggregated into a single daily amount, and amounts cannot be moved from one meal to another (e.g., if the full amount for breakfast is not expended, it cannot be carried over to lunch or dinner). A driver's work diary (as maintained for fatigue management purposes) can be used to demonstrate when meal breaks were taken. See more
