20.01.2022 A ratchet is a mechanical device that allows continuous linear or rotary motion in only one direction while preventing motion in the opposite direction. Recently I heard a Manager describe how we manage workplace health and safety as being ratcheted up too tight! I thought this was a great description of how many of the business owners I have been speaking to feel about how they are expected to manage safety. Regulations and compliance around safety is so important so th...at we have standards of how we manage our work activities, especially those that are high risk. However, I think what we are sometimes in danger of is devaluing the importance of remembering our teams are our experts in what they do. They have the experience and firsthand knowledge of the safest way to complete a task. We need to encourage engagement, awareness and communication amongst our teams when preparing for any task. Or argue over a safety rule. I knew he’d done the job before; If I spoke up he might get sore. The chances didn’t seem that bad; I’d done the same, he knew I had. So I shook my head and walked on by; He knew the risks as well as I. He took the chance, I closed an eye; And with that act, I let him die. I could have saved a life that day, But I chose to look the other way. Now every time I see his wife, I know I should have saved his life. That guilt is something I must bear; But it isn’t something you need share. If you see a risk that others take That puts their health or life at stake, The question asked or thing you say; Could help them live another day. 07.01.2022 I recently had the privilege of attending, and presenting to a group workshop with Gerard and the fantastic tradie businesses of Million Dollar Tradies. During the day I learnt so much from Gerard and these successful businesses that are on a clear path to growth and increased success. I had the opportunity to facilitate a session with the team about leadership and what that means in regards to "taking care" of those in their charge. As a group we discussed possible strengths..., weaknesses, opportunities and threats to a business regarding health and safety.
