21.01.2022 Question of the Day - What is the action like on your guitar and why does it matter? If you have only been playing guitar for a short time you may not know what action on the guitar is and why its important. First of all action when talking about guitar is the height of the strings above the neck (fretboard) of the guitar. Its usually measured at the 12th fret in mms or inches and the action will differ between a classical guitar, acoustic guitar and electrical guitar.... So why is it important to know the action on your guitar? Lets start here by saying there is 3 main standards to classify action. Low Action Medium Action (optimum height) High Action If your action is too low you may find your strings touch the metal fret markers when you hold down a string. This will create a buzzy noise and the string wont ring out clearly. If your action is too high, this will make it harder to push the strings down when playing a note or a chord. This will make playing the guitar much harder. Medium Action is in between. This is the optimum height of the strings above the fretboard. So how do you measure the action on your guitar? To know this you ideally need a metric string action gauge (a special measuring ruler for guitar). However, most guitarists dont have one of these. So the easy thing to do is to just take your guitar to your local guitar shop and ask them to check the action for you. While your there ask them what they think of your strings. Are your strings stained, rusty or have they changed to a darker tone? It may be a good time to get some new strings. This will make your guitar even nicer (and easier) to play. 10.01.2022 Throwback Thursday - The year was 1991 and I got my first Red Hot Chili Peppers album on cassette (yes, old school I know). The album in question was Blood Sugar Sex Magik. I played this tape to death! In particular it was the guitarist John Fruciante that inspired me to take up the guitar to learn songs such as Under the Bridge & I Could Have Lied. Many songs I have written over the years have incorporated Johns Funk / Rock and melodic style, so I say Thank You to J...ohn Fruciante and RHCP for this. #throwbackthursday So my question to your is - Who has inspired you to play the guitar?
