21.01.2022 Face Masks With face masks being compulsory in New South Wales, your child may be asking questions about why grown ups are wearing them all the time now. They may also feel uncomfortable when they see people wearing them. Social stories are a fantastic way to explain specific situations to children using pictures and simple words. We love this social story created by Autism Spectrum Australia that provides a clear explanation of when, where and why adults need to wear mas...ks during the pandemic. https://www.autismspectrum.org.au//People-wearing-masks-So

16.01.2022 Busy Pictures (as the name implies!) are full of visual ideas and are silly enough to pique interest in therapy using a less structured approach. Busy Pictures are a great tool to work on vocabulary (Who is that? What is that? Why is he crying? Where is the dog? When do you go swimming), verbs (What is she doing? What did he do?), sentence formation (e.g. Tell me what the boy did), following instructions, inferences (e.g. Why are the kids wearing gloves outside? Why are the kids laughing on the playground? Why is he crying?), predictions (e.g. what do you think will happen next?).

16.01.2022 Letter teams! Handwriting is easier when you know the letter teams and here they are: "Magic C" (a, c, d, g, o, q, s) "Bouncing" (b, h, k, m, n, p, r) "Straight" (f, i, j, l, t)... "Loopy" (u, v, w, y) "Cheeky" (e, x, z) Happy writing! #occupationaltherapy #letterteams #spelling #handwriting #alphabet

11.01.2022 On your marks, get set....GO! Look at our keen young runners showing off their skills in Running Group Running groups are designed to help children work on their running technique, fitness, speed and agility skills. The goal for most children is to increase their participation in sport and physical activity and to achieve their full potential. The groups foster a culture of hard work, doing your personal best and encouraging each other in a team. It is a fun and supp...ortive environment where kids learn valuable physical and mental skills whilst also getting the opportunity to make friends and practise their social skills. We have 2 groups (junior and senior) with up to 8 kids in each. Groups run for 45min weekly on Mondays and Tuesdays during the term. We also run school holiday groups! Contact us for more details if you're interested. Picture from Alisa Moore (PT) leader of Running Group!

09.01.2022 Making Reading Fun Shared book-reading has many wonderful benefits for your child’s language and social communication development. Children learn best when they are engaged. Here are some tips to make reading fun! Follow your child’s lead. Let them turn the pages Be face-to-face so that you can see what interests them Don’t worry if you can’t finish the story... Talk about the cover page, pictures and model language along. For example, ‘Fish. A big fish. A big fish is swimming in the pond’. Ask questions about the story and let your child ask questions too. This promotes good turn-taking skills in conversation Be animated and silly! You and your child can pretend to be the characters It’s ok to read the same story over and over again. Repetition provides more opportunities for children to learn and retain language #reading #literacy #speechpathology #engagement #children #earlylanguage #paediatrics

Sound manipulation 8. 02.01.2022 Swallowing Awareness Day In 2021, Speech Pathology Australia will host Swallowing Awareness Day on Wednesday 17 March. Like breathing, swallowing is essential to everyday life. Humans swallow at between 500-700 times a day, around three times an hour during sleep, once per minute while awake and even more during meals.... Around one million Australians have a swallowing difficulty. Swallowing problems can occur at any stage of life. However, the knowledge of dysphagia and its implications remain largely unknown for most Australians. Swallowing Awareness Day 2021 is an opportunity to bring attention to swallowing disorders and to connect people with speech pathologists, the professionals who can help. #SwallowAware2021 #dysphagia #speechpathology #speechpathologyaustralia
