22.01.2022 I call BS... "You can't overfeed a breastfed baby" This message has been bandied about forever. Stop for a second. This can't make logical sense! Think it through and stop overfeeding your baby!... For those that like this phrase, can you explain to me why I often see exclusively breastfed babies gaining double the weight they need to, with excessive wind, regular vomiting, and poor sleep? They're overfed! Dr Scott Dunlop Consultant Paediatrician Addit: This is NOT an attack on breastfeeding. Yes, formula fed babies can overfeed as well. The point is simple - breastfed babies CAN overfeed, and this can cause symptoms and excessive weight gain. Polite disagreements welcome - abusers will be blocked

21.01.2022 Fact of the Day "An analysis of the Kids' Inpatient Database in the United States found a 10-fold increase in tongue-tie surgeries between 1997 and 2012" Seems unusual to me...... r Scott Dunlop Consultant Paediatrician

19.01.2022 I call BS... When your child is seeing a therapist of any kind, and for whatever reason you decide to end that relationship, yet you're told that you can't leave until you've had a "Discharge Consultation". That is over-servicing at its worst, and you're making the right decision...... Dr Scott Dunlop Consultant Paediatrician

19.01.2022 PLEASE BE AWARE: Just to be perfectly clear, please do not expect to be able to reliably receive responses from Dr Dunlop regarding urgent medical conditions. You may get a response quite quickly, but in many cases, may not receive a response for 1-2 business days. ... Use your common sense - seek in person assessments with your GP or ED for urgent matters rather than rely on an online service that is not available 24 hours a day.

16.01.2022 Another one for the BS file... I call BS on Kinesiologists seeing kids for "massage", "prescribing" supplements, and "counselling". When you go and get a physio degree, a medical degree, and a psychology degree, come back and I might change my mind.... Needless to say, the parents haven't noticed any improvement to their child's anxiety... Dr Scott Dunlop Consultant Paediatrician

16.01.2022 So I dared to post something yesterday that mentioned breastfeeding. A male paediatrician posting about breastfeeding - the worst combination. How dare I proffer an opinion? Maybe I shouldn't have posted - I would have got to bed a lot earlier and not spent hours defending a fairly simple concept. ... But I'm glad I posted nonetheless. This is despite the barrage of vitriolic abuse that came my way, both publicly and privately, which did the posters themselves a complete disservice. The language used shocked me, and I'm not one to ordinarily be shocked by language. What concerned me most was the number of mothers who chose to thank me privately for the post, and felt that they couldn't do so publicly for fear of receiving the same ideological vitriol. It's a sign of the times that they felt like their voice couldn't be heard. Why is it that the ideologues are always the loudest and most aggressive voices? To those that criticised politely and with decency, thanks for being part of the conversation. To those that supported the post publicly, good on you for being heard. To those who supported in private, your messages were warmly received and please feel that Kids Consult is a place to voice your opinion without fear or favour. Your voice will be protected from the unpleasant minority. Dr Scott Dunlop Consultant Paediatrician

14.01.2022 Today's little piece of bollocks... "Naturopaths advising patients when to stop their reflux medication" I call BS on anything any naturopath said ever about children's health... Dr Scott Dunlop Consultant Paediatrician

12.01.2022 I am pleased to invite you to join the next chapter of Kids Consult Kids Consult Premium. When I started Kids Consult in 2017, it was with the aim of guiding new and established parents through the mire of medical diagnoses and referrals. In that time, the Page has grown to over 12,000 followers, and the associated Group to almost 10,000. It has been a busy 2 years I have answered over 10,000 public and private questions in that time. That’s a lot of questions! And it tak...es a lot of time at least 3 hours/day is generally spent on Kids Consult outside of my normal office consulting and hospital on-call commitments. As a father of 5 children, life is ridiculously busy, and Kids Consult does take quite a bit of my time away from family and other commitments. So that leaves a dilemma of scaling back on my time spent on Kids Consult, or scaling back on my other consulting times in order to maintain my current commitment to you all here online. I’d prefer to do the latter. But in order to do that, I’ve made the difficult decision to transform Kids Consult into a Subscription service Kids Consult Premium. For a very small fee, you will still get the same access to me, and will also benefit from additional services and offerings, including Facebook Live events, other Experts, Seminars and Product Reviews. The free Kids Consult Page and Group will still exist, and from time to time I will continue to post others’ Qs and As there for ongoing interest and education, as well as moderate discussions that may take place there. I’m excited by the new transition, and what it will allow me to continue to provide for you all online. Hopefully you’ll join me in the ongoing journey! Dr Scott Dunlop Consultant Paediatrician HOW TO JOIN: 1. Visit the Kids Consult website www.kidsconsult.com.au 2. Click on "Subscribe" and follow the prompts 3. Please ensure you leave your Facebook name/tag so you can be identified. 4. Once successfully subscribed, go to the Kids Consult Premium Group Page and request to be added. This should be accepted within 24 hours.

12.01.2022 Today I call out any company claiming they can boost your child's immune system with a supplement of any kind. There is no evidence for this AT ALL! More money for Kids Consult parents to save by not wasting it on this nonsense.... Dr Scott Dunlop Consultant Paediatrician

08.01.2022 Kids Consult was never meant to be anything but a source of medical information. But the NSW/Vic Bushfire crisis has led me to today reach out to the nearly 9000 Kids Consult Group members, and over 12000 Kids Consult Followers. We're aiming to raise $10,000 this weekend - that's only just over $1 from every Member. Obviously we'd love more!... Funds raised will go to the St Vincent de Paul Bushfire Appeal, with money going directly to support those whose homes and businesses have been destroyed in the last few weeks. Please donate as generously as you can. Alternatively, there are many other organisations who would welcome your donation via their own Bushfire Appeals. Dr Scott Dunlop Consultant Paediatician

08.01.2022 I call BS... ...on Behavioural Optometry. The notion that children's learning difficulties / behavioural difficulties / ADHD / Autism / etc, etc can be improved with vision therapy of any kind is nonsense.... There is no reliable body of scientific evidence that behavioural optometry has any clinical role to play in treating children. Unfortunately, schools are a big culprit here - kids being referred to Behavioural Optometry (amongst others) for a range of differing issues, as the first line of assessment, often leads parents down a useless path of time wasting and expense. Don't do it. See your GP or Paediatrician for evidence-based advice. Dr Scott Dunlop Consultant Paediatrician

08.01.2022 I call BS on "Wonder Weeks". Let's use our commonsense - to think that every baby goes through the same unhappy-happy stage of cognitive development at the same time is ludicrous. But there was a book written wasn't there??? It must be true!... Fact 1: The author is no longer a respected member of academia Fact 2: The author's own PhD student actually did a study that showed it was all nonsense. Fact 3: Sleep-deprived parents ares sitting ducks for the enticement of the parenting advice book - just in the hope that there is a pearl of wisdom hidden deep in the text of one of these books that will unlock a world of parenting utopia. Don't be a sitting duck! And just because you've become a parent doesn't mean your brain doesn't work anymore! Dr Scott Dunlop Consultant Paediatrician

06.01.2022 I call BS... On multivitamins in children in 99% of cases. Unless your child has a chronic illness that leads to proven micronutrient or vitamin deficiency, there is NO evidence that multivitamins will do anything for your child at any stage ever!... Yes, you might need to occasionally give iron supplements or Vitamin D to kids, but only when proven to be deficient. Ask yourself the question - why is it that whole rows of pharmacy aisles are filled with multivitamins? Because they sell! Don't be guilted in to thinking you are doing the necessary thing by filling your kids with unnecessary chewies, gummies, and whatever other carefully crafted formulation of multivitamin you come across. Save your money and go on a holiday instead. Dr Scott Dunlop Consultant Paediatrician

05.01.2022 I call BS.... Today I only have two words... "Amber necklaces"... Come on people...really???? Dr Scott Dunlop Consultant Paediatrician

04.01.2022 "Truth is the first casualty of war" Please watch this video and be horrified by the suggestion Vitamin K is a risk to newborns. The major risk is that of intracerebral bleeding, from lack of Vitamin K, which I have personally seen. ...
