16.01.2022 Today on Early Childhood Educators Day, we celebrate the contribution early educators make to the lives of children, families and our country as a whole. The in...tegral role educators play has been brought into sharp focus during the pandemic. In an environment where social distancing cannot be observed, early educators have continued to work - providing a quality early education for children, and allowing parents with young families to keep their jobs. Early educators are essential workers in every sense of the word. Today and every day, we thank them for all they do. #EarlyChildhoodEducatorsDay #ozearlyed Early Childhood Educators Day Big Steps Campaign United Workers Union Early Childhood Australia

14.01.2022 Most parents would do anything to protect their children. Most parents wouldn’t introduce their child to an abuser, nor would they allow abusers access to their... children. Most parents don’t know that statistically only 11% of sexually abused children were abused by a stranger.. Let that sink in. 89% off sexually abused children knew their abuser. 12% of females and 4.5% of males report having been sexually abused before the age of 15 with the majority being between the ages of 3 and 8! I can imagine most of you are reading this thinking, this wouldn’t happen to my kids. No one in our family or friendship circle would hurt my kids. And I’m sure most of the parents of the abused kids thought the exact same thing. So what can we do to protect our kids? We can talk. We can use our voices as a weapon against these appalling facts. We can educate and empower our children to protect themselves and to remove the effectiveness of the techniques that groomers use. Our favourite book is called ‘Only for me’ and it’s a a fun, rhyming book. It informs kids of their right to privacy and how to protect their own body, by discussing body parts, safe secrets, the power of saying no and what to do if something bad does happen. I’m going to do a few more posts in relation to child protection.. why we don’t have ‘secrets’ in our house, calling a penis a penis and a vagina a vagina and how to teach consent to kids. But for now, buy this book, read it more then once. Read it over and over until your kids know it so well that they read along with you. It was written by a mum of 4. No one is making money off this book. Not me, and not the author. She donates 100% of her royalties to the agencies treating victims and preventing child abuse. It is an incredible resource you can use to fight back against these monsters. Our greatest weapon is to educate and empower our kids. Our greatest weapon is our voice. *this is not an ad* #onlyformeprotects #childprotection

13.01.2022 Did you know that young children learn best when multiple senses are engaged? Combining touch, vision, taste, smell and hearing will help your child learn impor...tant things such as problem solving, fine and gross motor skills, and language development. The more senses involved the more learning and retention improve! Basically- slippery, bumpy, sticky, gooey activities will not only be fun (and messy ) but really benefit your child's learning. My Sophia is using our word building board here to practise her writing- don't worry she did not look this clean for long . https://wattleandwildflower.com.au/produc/word-building-set

09.01.2022 Don’t make this pram mistake. Covering your baby’s pram like this picture can be dangerous. With summer here, protecting your baby from the sun is very importan...t. But equally important is protecting them from the heat. Covering a pram can reduce the air circulation, therefore increasing the internal pram temperature significantly, even in mild weather. To keep your baby safe when in the pram, remember: P: protect from the sun R: regularly check your baby A: air circulation is key M: make sure you can see the baby Use a shade cover that has been specifically designed for your pram, that provides good air circulation and allows you to see your baby at all times. MORE INFO FROM OUR PRAM TEMPERATURE EXPERIMENT: "Even in a relatively mild environment, when the pram is covered you can see the steady increase in temperature, very quickly exceeding that of the air temperature surrounding the pram itself. This is a good indication not only of the importance of air circulation but the risk of covering baby indoors when they are sleeping or to shield them from others. In just an hour, an increase of almost 8 degrees can be seen reaching a very uncomfortable and potentially dangerous temperature of 36.9 degrees, compared to a mild 28 degrees outside of the pram. The temperature was constantly monitored to really give us an idea of consistent changes and the impact the muslin wrap had." 01.01.2022 Great insights about building emotional awareness from @doodledwellness who says: "We teach children to tie their shoes, so why not teach children how to label... their emotions? We expect people to be able to label and cope with their emotions but this is actually a SKILL that is learned. The most impactful period of learning is during early childhood when children are interacting with their caregivers. Adults can help children identify their emotions and also MODEL emotional labelling (e.g., saying something like "I am feeling happy today because ...." aloud) That's why the fab @miniyogaclub and I collaborated on this post to show you an exercise you can use to build emotional awareness with kids!
