24.01.2022 FACT OF THE WEEK: Many babies develop flat spots on the back of their heads by the time they reach 3-4 months of age. The technical term is Plagiocephaly and it is usually as a result of a head orientation preference (develops in the womb) or contracture along the sterno-cleido-mastoid muscle of the neck which is referred to as a torticollis (usually develops as a result of slight trauma during delivery). Prevention is of course best so ensure your baby spends time with their... head in different positions throughout the day (follow the SIDS protocols for sleep periods). If concerned that your baby has already developed a flat spot or a preference to one side, then an assessment from a Paediatric Physiotherapist is recommended. Treatment may involve a positioning, carrying, feeding, stretching and strengthening program. This conservative approach, when applied early, will most often prevent the need for a corrective helmet.
