16.01.2022 Hey Queensland! The University of Queensland are sponsoring a gut study and are seeking participants for this new study. Information supplied to us.... Background: Autistic Children are four (4) times more likely to suffer with gut issues (tummy and bowel problems) than children without autism. Research has linked both gut issues and autism to changes within the two-way communication network called the gut-brain axis. Gut issues are also linked to increased severity of autistic behaviours and independently to anxiety/depression. Given the two-way nature of the gut-brain axis, a combined, two-way treatment approach may be beneficial (i.e. a gut-based and brain-based treatment approach used together). Aim: To reduce gut issues in Autistic children. Participants: Children between 5-10 years old with a confirmed autism diagnosis plus a history of tummy/bowel issues. NB - there are a few criteria that may exclude your child from participating, their eligibility will be assessed. the attached questionnaires and confirmed at the first clinic visit. Study Design: This is a randomised clinical trial, meaning if your child is suitable, he/she will be randomly allocated to one of three treatment arms: Synbiotic supplement (prebiotic + probiotic mixture) - daily supplement for 12 weeks. The synbiotic is a tasteless, odourless and colourless powder that can be easily disguised in fluid or semi-fluid foods. Gut-directed hypnotherapy - 6 x 1-hour sessions over 12 weeks; this non-invasive, client-led psychotherapy approach uses the child’s unique strengths to help return the gut to normal functioning. Synbiotic + gut-directed hypnotherapy Time Commitment: The intervention period is 12 weeks, with a 24-week follow-up Contact details: Leanne Mitchell PhD Candidate University of Queensland [email protected]> 0414689850 Qld Residents only
