22.01.2022 You can find inner peace and happiness even when the world disturbs you. The world is not really under anyone’s control. If we haven’t realized that this year, ...we are missing an important message. Even your body is not entirely under your control, leave alone controlling other living beings and all of nature. The world will never do what we exactly want it to do, and we should not let that disturb our inner calm. This is one of the most important messages of yoga. The path to lasting happiness does not lie in creating the ideal circumstances outside. It lies in cultivating peace with all circumstances from inside. That practice of inner acceptance is called vara-praidhna in Chapter 2 of the Yoga Stra. Do your best to create a positive change in the world to the extent you are involved in it. Leave the rest to the Divine, or nature, or chance (as you prefer), for you don’t control it all. And be at peace with that. 11.01.2022 I’ve been fairly quiet on this page during the current COVID-19 situation: I’ve noticed a lot of others have been much quieter on social media as well. It’s certainly felt like a time for drawing inwards, into a safe cocoon! After an initial shutdown of three months, we are fortunate here on the Gold Coast to be able to continue with in-person yoga classes, albeit with reduced numbers to allow for physical distancing. Reading widely and studying different commentaries to Patañjali’s Yogastra, both ancient and modern, can be helpful (or unhelpful!). But if the practical pathway of the Yogastra is to be of any use, it must be more than just intellectual pursuit. Thanks to my teachers for helping me make this wisdom real and applicable in my own life.
