25.01.2022 In our final artist video for Kids’ Home Publishing Series One, venerable artist John Wolseley shows us what marvellous fun book making can be you can splosh and dribble, rub paper to make patterns, cut and paste and stick on all different kinds of fragments. Watch John create a story around the life-cycle of a beetle local to his forest studio, using all the techniques which have made him a world famous artist and naturalist. This is a mini masterclass in creativity as pla...y, with a beautiful reading of the finished book by the author. Wolseley's work hangs in the National Gallery of Australia, Canberra; most state galleries, Parliament House, Canberra; several regional and tertiary collections and internationally in collections in England and Yugoslavia. John Wolseley says of his childhood: I was a passionate keeper of grass snakes and field mice... endlessly wandering... I’m still wandering around now. Remember, the Grand Imaginator has made a video to show you how to fold your 8-page book, and the Kids' Home Publishing guest artist videos will inspire you with different ways to fill your book with words and pictures. 12.01.2022 So thrilled that our Small Friends are publishing another great book - and with reviews #bychildrenforchildren, what a launch!

10.01.2022 Who's been making 8-page books in lockdown? Brigid will be back in the Book Cubby on Friday 18 September to read more of your books. Please send us a photo of your book ... it's as easy as 1, 2, 3, 4! 1. Open up your folded book completely and lay it flat, and you’ll see all the pictures and text are on one side of the paper. 2. Take a photo of the flat paper, making sure the whole piece of paper is in the photo. Please don't edit or crop the photo - we'll do that.... 3. Email the photo to [email protected] by Tuesday 15 September and be sure to write in the email where you are and your name (which should be on your cover anyway, because you are an author!) 4. That’s it! Brigid will read as many books as she can in the Book Cubby on Friday 18 September. You can find all the other videos in this series (including how to fold an 8-page book, if you need to learn) on our YouTube channel KidsOwnPublishing. Thank you for this trailer Michael Camilleri aka crazy man/man with weird green face/Grand Imaginator/ and Melbourne Minor for the fabulous action shots and the 24-hour library for your 8-page books. #kidshomepublishing #booksbychildrenforchildren #lockdownlibrary

01.01.2022 Avant garde. Bold. Inspiring. Surprising. Unconventional. Thank you artist Michael Camilleri for paying homage to children as authors and illustrators in this stupendous animation of Armaan Alkan's 8-page book 'The Curious Apple'. Michael shares why kids make the best books ... The way kids write a story the dialogue, the structure of the narrative, the way it ends can be very surprising and unconventional. (I suppose the conventions haven't crusted on yet.) ‘The Curious Apple’ is a sterling example and the ending is swamped in duck quacks. I know some published stories written by young people have been illustrated by adults, like ‘The Pirates' Tale’ by Janet Aitchison, five and a half, illustrated by pro Jill McDonald (which is very fun, by the way). But when kids make the whole book, their own illustrations and the way they lay out their pages and structure their books visually are as interesting and inspiring as the words. Some of their design decisions are boldly avant garde. Some are quietly thought provoking. In ‘The Curious Apple’, on this page, the main character, Apple, is striped grey and white. On the next Apple is striped green and white. Then pink, then green-and-white check, then gold, then orange. Just because. Which, to a picture book illustrator, is kind of astounding. But even subtler things like the way the words are written and the white spaces on the page have their own definite aesthetic character. In this animated snippet of ‘The Curious Apple’, the goal was to celebrate the particular aesthetics of Armaan's design as well as her unique dialogue. It's such a fun challenge to bring my own skills and sensibilities (and silliness) to work with hers. You can hear the complete story, including duck quacks, being read by Brigid in the Book Cubby as part of Kids’ Home Publishing Series One https://www.youtube.com/watch Please join Kids' Own Publishing in congratulating both artists! ‘The Curious Apple’ by Armaan Alkan Animation by Michael Camilleri Fruit performed by Michael Camilleri Michael Camilleri #kidshomepublishing #kidsownartbooks2020 #ngvartbookfair #booksbychildrenforchildren #galactictractor
