25.01.2022 Congratulations a fantastic win at Lismore for Square Meaters.

25.01.2022 New calf yesterday and late today discovered that she had twin heifers and one had died, it was some distance away behind the contour bank when I walked in to check the cow and weight the calf, at 29 kgs we would not have expected a second calf. So pleased she has one by her side!

24.01.2022 Christmas with the family tonight and this is a lovely present from Thomas Pengilly for Adrian and I.

24.01.2022 Okay so this cow was in no hurry, I eventually broke the sack and assisted the heifer to the ground!! How long do you wait, still fully in the birth sack? Bit of wandering camera work!

24.01.2022 Bit of cattle work over the weekend, weighted and measured the heifers ( see their story for weight update) and baby bulls. Walked K Lewis out of the cows, it's great working with placid reasonable mannered bulls and paddocked 3 bulls without any argy bargy testosterone.

22.01.2022 The first of 2 late calves arrived yesterday to a heifer, easy birth, second attempt to get up much bette than the first! Wet and in the shadow looks very dark but lightened off to dark grey.

22.01.2022 So now we have 8 calves on the ground 2 bulls 6 heifers of which 3 are AI. 4 out if 6 AId conceived. Selection of calf photos.

22.01.2022 Dry and very dry is the conditions just now, we have several bush fires in the region and lots of firefighters and water bombers working on these blazes. At the moment they are some 100 plus kms from us and we have been lucky that there are none close by.

21.01.2022 Baling the pasture, digging it out of the regrowth until I discovered a flat tire on the hay rake that stopped the process, about 1 acre to go! But 26 round bales off approx 8 acres is really great. Sad to say it looks like the oats will be rained upon! Some of them look a little wonky, but the cows wont mind, they love it!

20.01.2022 Calving has started, a chunky little heifer, her ear was folded down when I first saw her, 1 down 6 to go!

19.01.2022 A cold and very welcome wet day today, nice by the fire!

19.01.2022 So nice to say rain last night 4mls and today just now 11mls, puddles in the paddocks will check the dam latter but not hopeful there yet.

18.01.2022 A little bully boy born yesterday, he was so laid back when I tagged him today, didnt even stand up! Then everyone had to investigate him, he just stayed low!

18.01.2022 There is always a hiccup at hay time, time being no 1 and rain a close no 2! But here are the oats coming down last Sunday, mower not handling it well, gets a bit choked at times.

17.01.2022 Waiting on the matriarch whale to calve, hopefully today!

16.01.2022 Bit of a calf photo shoot thru the car window from the road today, and a play at editing, always regret just having the phone camera to hand!

16.01.2022 It has been a tough week with the loss of a little AI heifer last week that came into the world backwards with a minimum amount of assistance. Hermoine produced a nice heifer by Daroth, so heifers are in the majority at the moment 6-1. Last couple of days waiting for the cold front that is desperately needed, high winds that blow through you and cold. Just now we have a little rain falling so hopefully it will save the pasture and we will be able to put the hay oats in soon.

15.01.2022 A couple of calves arrived over weekend, so thats 4 on the ground and 3 to go - 3 heifers 1 bull!

14.01.2022 Another trip to Toowoomba Royal Agricultural show for our SMCAA Board meeting in conjunction with the the judging of cattle. Great display of true-to-type Square Meaters cattle, view photos and results on the QLD Breed Promotion Group and Square Meaters Cattle FB sites.

14.01.2022 I recall my mother telling of my fathers comment when they thought about visiting WA in 1957 to look at new land in Esperance - quote "Oh, for some sand under my feet!" from a Gippsland Dairy Farmer. Well, today I thought about that comment with both mum and dad in my thoughts and revelled in my feeling this morning when feeding out our meagre supply of hay "Oh, feel the squelch of wet soil under my feet!" How marvellous, over night 11.5mls in the guage and a bit more coming all the time, small puddles in hollows in the paddocks but the squelch feeling is definitely there and clover cotolydons have sprouted!

13.01.2022 Great results Jacqui Palk, congratulations on a lovely steer and looks like he could do well in the Carcase too, good luck!

12.01.2022 So calving start seems slow but i am a bit ahead of their dates! But got a pleasant suprise today when the first AI calf arrived, a week early but with the conditions were not surprised, just happy to have the lilttle silver/grey heifer safe on the ground. I watched her birth after Jane showed signs of starting about 3.20pm, then a check at 4.20 pm through the binoculars and it was all happening and over with in about 10 minutes!

12.01.2022 A slow Sunday morning walk on the farm, effects of the flu still hanging around. Twins and their mate and the crop inspector.

11.01.2022 Preg-tested dry animals this week and was surprised that we still have 9 calves to come. With the tough conditions we had hoped to move on a number of older females. Not to be this time! Calves in the evening light.

10.01.2022 Some 2019 calves most weaned now and sad to say that lightening took out a beautiful silver heifer on Friday night, the last of her line, very upsetting.

10.01.2022 Update on the matriarch whale Bonnie! Twins! This morning a boy and girl, all doing well.

10.01.2022 Just taking in a couple of loads of hay.

08.01.2022 This is our water supply dam for the cattle, it has been dry since December 2019 and we have carted around 70000 - 10000 litres each week with a 1000 litre shuttle. Hope the cold front heading our way still has lots of rain left in it, 4.5 mls this morning, lots of wind overnight and now, about 40 mls will put some water in the dam!

06.01.2022 Some "get out of jail" rain fell yesterday and last night 28.5 mls dam now half full so a bit of breathing space!

06.01.2022 Well Easter Saturday saw the second round of injections for the cows plus a dose of selenium, they were not impressed with two needles. And today our first heifer calf is two weeks old, seems like the other heifers were not in a hurray but feel that one slipped her calf early and re-mated. Along with broken gates a bull getting in with the cull cows then into the agistment heifers a second time, there will be late calves at Kilayr this year! But, having lost our agistment paddock we will now need to re-think the future of those heifers and the weaners.

06.01.2022 The latest edition and other calves at Kilayr SM.

06.01.2022 I might just check to see if there is food!

05.01.2022 Great we now have some water in the dam from last weeks rain but would love some more, the last calf arrived on Friday and the tractor is back from recall after nearly two weeks to replace 4 studs! The oats are growing well and sprayed for weeds, looking good compared to last year!

05.01.2022 Still to calve and a moments rest on a log creates the interest of the cattle, so peaceful sitting with them.

04.01.2022 After the exciting week in QLD where Oakvale Square Meaters took out honours with the Eating Quality Award competition we completed our own very small in-house porterhouse quality test. We had won a beautifully presented boutique packet of porterhouse steak in a raffle and looked forward to testing this steak, we were disappointed as the flavour, tenderness and aroma did not meet our expectations! Further more, a week later we repeated the process with a Kilayr Square Meaters porterhouse steak which ozzed with flavour, excellent tenderness and that marvelous aroma throughout the grilling, we know the reason why we vow to not purchase or eat steak from other sources, where possible.

04.01.2022 The last of the 2019 drop weaners 10 - 13 months old heifers and a steer. So we weighed the weaners on Sunday 9/11 - average weight 4 older heifers 13 - 16 months - 345kg with 2 frame sizes - 3@4 & 1 @ <1 (small less 50 kg of the other 3 but a thumping SM type also cull due to size,11 m/o heifer 255kg, steer 14 m/o 424kg.

03.01.2022 Almost a full day of sorting and preparing cows for calving yesterday in and endeavour to reduce the incidence of calf scoures through preparing the cows with improved antibodies prior to calving. They were not impressed with being needled but still have another one to go then sorted weaners and sale animals, kept two more heifers than planned but happy with the selection of 6 young females. Everyone behaved well and no tempres lost.

02.01.2022 This little lady born on Sunday was not impressed with her ear ring.

01.01.2022 We are so please to see our dam officially full, the grass green and crop growing!

01.01.2022 The last calf and the first for 2020, an 18.1kg female definitely another way out of season but healthy and safely on the ground.

01.01.2022 Photo shoot today of calves and mothers.
