25.01.2022 The unearthing of the corduroy crossing in Toowoomba recently, brought to mind another similar crossing. This one is believed to have been convict-built. The ph...oto was taken in 1995. The crossing was situated on the Mosquito Creek Road about 1 km west of the Rabbit Fence Gate on the northern side of the current road. I'm not sure if it's still there. See more

24.01.2022 Rosenthal The restoration of a historic Queensland homestead. It is thought Rosenthal Homestead was built by Frederick Bracker between 1845 and 1849 and is part of Queensland’s pioneering history for its role in the breeding of Merino sheep and cattle. When it was initially settled, the property had boundaries as far as Pikedale and Greymare. The property is older than Glengallan, Canning Downs is the only homestead that is older. It has sheltered Australian explorer Ludwig ...Leichhardt and possibly bushranger Captain Thunderbolt. The homestead itself has been continuously occupied and has furniture such as the dining room table which has been in use since the home’s construction.Frederick John Henry Bracker (1799-1870), wool-grower, was born at Mecklenburg, Germany, son of John Bracker, farmer. He arrived in New South Wales from Hamburg on 17 January 1829 on the ‘Diadem’ with about three hundred stud sheep chosen by him from Prince Esterhazy's Silesian flock for the Aberdeen Co. Instead of returning to Germany as he had planned, he remained in the colonies and in 1843 the Aberdeen Co. gave him charge of a run near Warwick which he called ‘Rosenthal’. Ludwig Leichhardt visited Rosenthal in 1846 and Bracker gave him a horse and twenty-five wethers as part of his supplies. Leichhardt called in again in 1847 and in 1848. The mules which he took on his last ill-fated journey were broken in on the property. When Leichhardt left Rosenthal for this ambitious journey, he gave his hosts an autographed copy of his journal from Moreton Bay to Port Essington, writing: To my hospitable friends Mr and Mrs Bracker in remembrance Ludwig Leichhardt. It was one of the last things Leichhardt wrote before he mysteriously disappeared on April 3, 1848.In 2016, third-generation owners, Jim and Diane Mulcahy, made the hard decision the sell the 60 acre heritage-listed property which included the homestead, a squatter’s cottage, kitchen building, plus sheds and a meat box that served as a garden shed. Jim had lived in the home since he was a child when the property was a sprawling dairy farm. His grandfather Stanley Mitchell first went there in 1900 and started off share farming before buying the property in 1919. As Jim and Diane did not have any children to leave the property to, it was time to turn the page regrettably. Their wish came true when mother and daughter team Jan and Annie Moir bought the property at auction. For almost three years, Annie and her partner Chris Allan worked to preserve the property, while also running the Killarney Hotel which is another historic building. The homestead was originally made up of three great big rooms, however they had to install a hallway in order to stabilise the structure. The homestead and squatter’s cottage were riddled with white ants and the restoration project ran into the hundreds of thousands of dollars. When the main homestead was complete, Jan Moir moved in. Annie and Chris also restored the squatter’s cottage which they now call home. The homesteads restoration journey was revealed to ABC's ‘Restoration Australia’. If anyone has not seen the program, I can definitely recommend it.https://iview.abc.net.au/show/restoration-australiahttp://adb.anu.edu.au/biography/bracker-frederick-john-henry-3039

17.01.2022 101 Years Ago (Give or take) - A young policeman made his way on horseback from Killarney to The Head. Through sixteen river crossings, the track was rough an...d slow. He reached The Head after dark. Once there, he happened to meet up with the Riverdale Sawmill proprietor, explaining his mission -"To close the Border. At midnight. And stop the spread of influenza!." Concerned, the older man said, "Now, why would you want to go and sit up there in the cold tonight? Come inside. Sleep here. Who will know if you close it tonight or first thing in the morning?" The grateful young man took up the kind offer. Once he was settled the older man excused himself. Breathlessly, he trotted to the barracks where his only remaining mill-worker slept. "Quickly!" he cried, "Ride to that party at The White Swamp and tell the team to come back immediately. They are going to close the Border!" The mill-worker saddled a horse and galloped away, arriving half an hour later in NSW. "They are going to close the Border!" he called. Chaotically, the Queensland party-goers raced to grab last kisses, saddlery & horses in the dark and return to The Head. Just before sunrise, the young policeman woke refreshed and rode the last few miles in time to close the Border at dawn. 30 January 1919

16.01.2022 Interesting story of the Affleck sawmill repeated on Landline today with Ralph Affleck designing his own sawmill to be operated by just one man, and using a 30cm ruler to draw up the plans. Wow. See Warwick Daily News Tuesday 17 November 1931, page 5 , Killarney headed "Men Who Clearer the Way" and alsohttps://trove.nla.gov.au/newspaper/rendition/nla.news-article177519582.txt

14.01.2022 Can you name them? Found in Roger Fraser's photos. The sign reads: Newtown Park 1918 Killarney RUFFS During WWI, Newtown Park housed a military drill hall. The park became a centre of recruitment and training. The local citizen force, the Militia and Darling Downs Light Horse units, used the park extensively. The drill hall served as headquarters for the 11th Light Horse after the Great War.

13.01.2022 My Great, Great, Great, Grandfather, William Spreadborough, the son of a labourer was born on 2 Jun 1815 in Kingston upon Thames, England, dying on 19 May 1878 i...n his home at Norbiton, Warwick. William married Jane Walters, daughter of John Walters and Mary Hart on 9 Jul 1835 in Kingston upon Thames producing three children: William, Susannah and George John. Jane was born on 9 Mar 1815 in Kingston upon Thames, dying there on 2 Dec 1839. After Jane died, William married Mary Jane Knight on 12 Aug 1841 in St Johns Church, Hampton Wick, Middlesex, England producing nine children: Caroline, John, Francis, Isaac, John, James, Thomas James, Richard and Octavius. Mary was born in 1818 in Wallop, Hampshire, England, dying on 12 Jun 1865 at her home in Norbiton, Warwick.. William Spreadborough, according to a family story, once worked at Kew Gardens, London, England. The birth certificate of his eldest child, Susannah in 1836 indicates she was born in Kingston upon Thames with William’s occupation listed as Labourer and whether he still worked at Kew is unknown. Later, the birth certificate of his son George John, born in 1839, shows William’s occupation as "Policeman". The family emigrated to Australia under the assisted passage scheme aboard the 'Canton' arriving in Sydney on 12th Jun 1848. From Sydney, the Spreadboroughs moved to the Paterson River District of New South Wales for a year. In 1849, the family moved to Talgai Station, Warwick Queensland where he was employed as gardener. In 1853 the family moved to Canning Downs where William was employed as gardener and station hand. Later, the family established their own farm, vineyard and orchard at Norbiton, Rosenthal, Warwick; the property containing portion of the Rosenthal Creek Floodplain and bordered by the present Dragon Street and Bracker Roads. Previously, the section of Bracker Road between Dragon Street and Warwick/Killarney Road was known as "Spreadborough Lane" but obviously to avoid confusion, the name was deleted with the complete road gazetted as "Bracker Road". William made at least two return visits to England and according to the "Courier Mail", on one of these visits, he left Moreton Bay as steerage passenger aboard "The Storm King" on 22 Apr 1870. He returned to Australia as steerage passenger aboard "The Star Queen", leaving London on 30 Dec 1870 and docking at Moreton Bay on 20 Mar 1871. It was also on this voyage that his niece, Louisa Bartlett emigrated to Australia as a free passenger. William was an Anglican and a Churchwarden of St Marks Church of England, Warwick. His photograph hangs next to that of Archdeacon Glennie in the southwest vestibule, beneath the bell tower of the present church. His son John was Warwick Town Clerk from 1902 until his death in 1918. A stained glass window in St Marks Anglican Church Warwick commemorates John's passing.

07.01.2022 I am so very grateful that Ivan Hancock introduced me to Ralph Affleck years ago. Through promoting Ralph to the World through ABC Landline story in 2014, Ralph segment has now been aired on National TV 7 times along with Chanel 9 Extra in 1997 and Chanel 7 Sunrise in 2015 and not to miss RM Williams Outback mag in 2015. Ralph and wife Heather have donated all monies raised to Guide Dogs Queensland amounting to many thousands. I’d like to thank Ralph and family for their contribution to Killarney Tourism. 03.01.2022 Image 1990s.only way to keep those NSW Cockroaches out !1960 location shot with caption: Quarantine gone mad - Up until the late 1960's, motorists travelling from the state of Qld to NSW had their car boots inspected by officers of the Department of Agriculture NSW at the state border. This was to see that no live plants, livestock &c were being carried in the boot. The idea was to stop the spread of the Qld cattle tick to NSW. Naturally, this being a failure, the practice was later disbanded. lol Can't have QLD bananas going over lol
