24.01.2022 As mentioned before, we are putting up our digital records at the "Victorian Collections" web site. This can be found by clicking on link below and searching for Kilmore. There are about 400 Kilmore related items listed already. Many other collections are also online. The above photograph is from one of our listings, a copy of the Kilmore Hospital By Laws and Rules. If you are interested in helping us digitise and make our collections available to the world, let us know and we can show you how it is done. https://kilmorehistory.wordpress.com//victorian-collectio/

24.01.2022 Rose King has assembled a display on the Kilmore Swimming Club, which was based on the Res. She has also written a brief history of the Swimming club. This display is currently in the Foyer of the Old Post Office. https://kilmorehistory.wordpress.com//swimming-club-displ/

24.01.2022 We are continuing to digitise our collection. Here Rose is taking photographs of one of our books using a light box. The pictures and a detailed description will be posted to the Victorian Collections website. Victorian Collections already contains the online listings of many other Historical Societies. https://kilmorehistory.wordpress.com//16/digitising-under/

23.01.2022 The current pandemic of coronavirus has already caused the cancellation of a great many activities, and the Committee of Kilmore Historical Society has decided that we must unfortunately follow suit. Therefore please note that: - The April and May general meetings with guest speakers are CANCELLED. - The Open House tour planned for April is CANCELLED. As we have no meetings in winter, our next scheduled meeting is the AGM in September. [ 29 more words ] https://kilmorehistory.wordpress.com//cancellation-of-act/

20.01.2022 The Annual General Meeting of Kilmore Historical Society will be held on Tuesday 1st September at the Court House in Powlett Street at 7:30 p.m. If the lifting of restrictions continues then the usual number of visitors will be feasible. As well as the AGM itself we will have a guest speaker, provided by the Broadford Historical Society, with a presentation on the history of the Paper Mill, which is rumoured to include a DVD with video. All members and non members are welcome. The evening will conclude with supper as per usual. https://kilmorehistory.wordpress.com//16/agm-september-1st/

17.01.2022 The Historical Society has made the decision to discontinue the use of our Post Office box. We now have a street address (2 Powlett Street Kilmore) which can be used for ordinary mail, and in any case most of our communications are now made through the Internet. We hope this does not cause any inconvenience. https://kilmorehistory.wordpress.com//post-office-box-clo/

15.01.2022 Re - Previous PO There is a photograph in the State Library titled "West Side of Sydney Street." It is credited to Vanheems and dated approx 1861. This photograph has captured the Post Office that was used prior to the construction of the bluestone building. Like all Vanheems works, this shot is beautifully detailed and contains a lot of useful information. There are two selections from this image below. The first gives the context of the building and shows us that the location of the old PO was in front of where the Noodle Shop currently stands. The smaller detail shows the sign "Post Office" clearly visible, and has captured a woman in the act of making an enquiry at the window.

15.01.2022 We have had a very encouraging response to the publication of these two photographs on our web site and in the local newspaper. Many people have contacted us with information about those involved. The following is a collation of the various responses. There are still some unidentified faces and some disagreement as to who some of them were, so we are always happy to hear more suggestions. 14.01.2022 Many thanks to the reader who contributed background information on the cover of the latest Kilmore Connections. Unfortunately the person who did so left no identifying details. The lady in the picture is Julia Kenny (1842-1920). The spinning jenny was made for her by her son Jack. More information on the Kenny family can be found in the 1968 publication "A Brief History of Pyalong". [ 99 more words ] https://kilmorehistory.wordpress.com/2020/03/17/1556/

12.01.2022 KHS will hold its May General Meeting with a guest speaker on 4 May, at 7:30 PM in the Old Post Office, 2 Powlett Street. The speaker will be Brian Clancy, and the title of the talk will be 'Tales from the Wells' - Brian has been researching the wells of Kilmore. We tend to forget how important water supply was in the days of early settlement.... https://kilmorehistory.wordpress.com//15/may-meeting-4-may/

11.01.2022 Kilmore Historical Society has been setting up our new premises at the Old Kilmore Post Office, 2 Powlett Street (next door to the Court House). Here are some photos of the arrangement of the new premises: -... https://kilmorehistory.wordpress.com//setting-up-our-new-/

10.01.2022 Barbara Wilson recently updated our listing of microfilm holdings. We have: Kilmore Advertiser 1874 - 1934 Kilmore Free Press 1865 - 1970 and 1991 - 1994 'Digging Papers inc Kilmore Standard of Freedom' May 21st - July 1855 The Examiner and Kilmore and McIvor Weekly Journal March 1856 - Dec 1856 Note that this is our holdings on microfilm only and does not include either physical newspaper copies or microfiche. A complete catalogue of these may appear later. https://kilmorehistory.wordpress.com//updated-microfilm-l/

10.01.2022 Grahame Thom has been looking through the National Archives Collection and has found three old photographs of the Post Office which we had not previously seen. Two are dated 1987, although the cars in the pictures do look a little older- perhaps Kilmore residents simply drove older cars! The other shows the gable end of the Cobb and Co stables, which Brian Clancy recalls being demolished in the early 1950's, which provides a minimum date for the image. https://kilmorehistory.wordpress.com//three-old-photos-of/

10.01.2022 Tonight (Tuesday April 6th) we will have a General Meeting with a guest speaker from Broadford Historical Society, who will be speaking on the history of the Broadford Paper Mill. The meeting will be at the Old Kilmore Post Office, 2 Powlett Street, and will begin at 7:30 pm. It will be followed by supper and a chance to mingle. Ever wonder what this object in the main street of Broadford is ? It is a paper processing unit from the factory https://kilmorehistory.wordpress.com//reminder-general-me/

09.01.2022 Our next General Meeting with a guest speaker will be held on Tuesday 6 April at 7:30 pm, at the Old Kilmore Post Office at 2 Powlett Street. The Broadford Historical Society will be presenting, with the aid of a DVD titled A History of the Broadford Paper Mill, which will be shown. Produced by Graham Neill for the Broadford & District Historical Society it received a Commendation at the Victorian Community History Awards.... https://kilmorehistory.wordpress.com//april-general-meeti/

09.01.2022 Dear members and visitors Due to the changing government advice regarding COVID 19 the Committee of our Society decided to close our research rooms at the old Kilmore Courthouse from Monday 23 March 2020, for the foreseeable future. We will be able to continue limited research service by email. But it may take longer to undertake the research. Please keep safe and follow the government's advice. 09.01.2022 Kilmore Free Press Wednesday, 17 September 1986, page 20 Cricket club to extend pavilion Extensions costing approximately $30,000 will soon take place at Kilmore Cricket Club's pavilion. The extensions will provide added space for change rooms, functions, score box and kitchen renovations. To enable the work to proceed, a small amount of additional finance is required. The club is calling on community members and supporters to loan $50 (or multiples thereof) for up to five years. [ 448 more words ] https://kilmorehistory.wordpress.com//cricket-in-kilmore-/

09.01.2022 New Restrictions On Opening We had previously hoped that we could re-open the Historical Society this coming Tuesday for our usual functions. Unfortunately the re-imposition of Covid restrictions means this is no longer possible. We therefore remain closed on Tuesdays until the restrictions lift. The AGM in September remains scheduled, but this will be reviewed nearer to the date.

08.01.2022 Pictures of Number 37 Several people have asked for pictures of the bluestone building at Number 37. Here are some, with one of the pieces of documentation that lets us date it to the 1850's.

08.01.2022 Fresh Application to Demolish Number 37 Sydney Street Kilmore Historical Society became involved in objections to a previous application to demolish the bluestone structure at Number 37 Sydney Street. There is now a fresh application before Council to demolish this structure and replace it with a representative pavement. We do not believe that the condition of the existing structure represents a significant enough threat to justify the demolition of one of Kilmore's oldest b...uildings. We urge any members of KHS who have concerns about this proposal to contact Mitchell Shire Council and register an objection. The address for the objection is on the picture of the application below.

08.01.2022 Book Sale - We had two great days selling lots of books. Many thanks to everyone who visited the old Kilmore Post Office, the new home of the Kilmore Historical Society. As we still have many books on hand, we are looking at having another book sale next Spring.

07.01.2022 Cricket in Kilmore has a long and interesting history. The following articles were taken from the local press. Some of our readers might remember some of the names listed. From: Kilmore Free Press, Thursday, 16 March 1966, page 1 CRICKET FINAL Great effort by L Boyd (93) The second day's play in the final of the Kilmore and District Cricket Association between Darraweit and Kilmore at Wallan on Saturday last, left Darraweit still in a strong position, as the match ends on Saturday next, March 18. 07.01.2022 We would be keen to hear from anyone who is familiar with the history of the bluestone Post Office on Powlett Street. We are particularly keen to hear oral histories from those who worked or lived here. If you have photographs of the interior we would be delighted to see and copy them. Either contact us via Facebook or drop in on our opening night on 2 February. Remember - the February meeting will be the AGM and the official opening of the new premises. https://kilmorehistory.wordpress.com//appeal-re-history-o/

06.01.2022 The re-imposition of Covid restrictions on Mitchell Shire means that we must keep any re-opening of the Historical Society on hold. The rooms will thus continue to be closed on Tuesdays, and on all other days. The date of the AGM remains in doubt. Consumer Affairs had already issued a directive allowing an extra 3 months for AGMs, which gives us some leeway. [ 30 more words ] https://kilmorehistory.wordpress.com//new-covid-restricti/

05.01.2022 Here is another series of images from the Weekly Times. This group was published on 26 February 1927, 94 years ago. Rather than views of Kilmore this is about the people of Kilmore. I wonder if anyone can identify any of the people in these nine images that will be posted over the next three weeks or so. The page is titled "Old Residents of Kilmore Welcomed Back During a Week of Celebrations Caption 1 - Mr Colin McNab (President of Home-Coming Committee) welcomes visitors on ...arrival. Caption 2 - Party of Kilmore residents and visitors on the tennis court See more

04.01.2022 Does Anyone have Information on these photos ? Brian Clancy forwarded us these two photographs. He originally received them from Jim Butler. The first photograph is believed to be from a Catholic deb ball held some time in the 1950’s, perhaps in1954. The second photograph is of a group of students from St Joseph’s College Kilmore and shows Infants 1, 2, and 3 for 1957.... Brian believes that many of the people in this photograph are still living in the Kilmore area. Do you recognize yourself or a friend or family member ? If so let us know.

02.01.2022 Kilmore Free PressThursday, 8 April 1976, page 8 Cricketer of the Year Captain of Kilmore's 'A' grade team, Lawrie Boyd, has been named cricketer of the year. Laurie's win was announced and this trophy presented to him at the club's Presentation Dinner, held in the Safari Room of the Red Lion Hotel on Friday night. He was also awarded a Life Membership, in recognition of his service to the Kilmore Cricket Club - both on and off the field - over a lengthy period. 02.01.2022 This time it is a single image from the Weekly Times of 8 August 1931. In football Kilmore won against Alexandra. The news item does not give the score, but a note says Kilmore was the leading team in the local competition. Our Society would be interested (as would members of this page) in any additional information about anyone listed.
