25.01.2022 Queue the sirens! My weekly footy tips are here What are our thoughts this week?
25.01.2022 May you have a great year of learning! Happy Songkran Festival!
24.01.2022 This year we mark World AIDS Day in the midst of another global pandemic. HIV, the virus responsible for causing AIDS, and COVID-19 are very different pathogens COVID-19 is much more infectious, while HIV is much more lethal. But there are parallels. ... It's a pity that many seem to have forgotten the lessons of the HIV/AIDS years, as veterans of that time such as Peter Piot, Anthony Fauci and Bill Bowtell have been reminding us. The first and most important is to put science in command, not politics. The second is that blaming the victim and hunting for scapegoats is not only wrong but positively harmful. The third is that pandemics can only be beaten when governments, scientists, doctors and the community work together. Australia learned that lesson in the 80s with HIV/AIDS, and now we have had to learn it again. We should be very grateful that in Australia we did so quickly, and in doing so we saved many lives. I think the community will remember who helped in that effort, and who made it more difficult by trying to score political points. World AIDS Day encourages Australians to educate themselves on prevention strategies and to ensure that people who live with HIV/AIDS do so free from stigma and discrimination. The apt theme for this year’s World AIDS Day is #NowMoreThanEver.
24.01.2022 When prominent international lawyer and human rights activist Amal Clooney gave evidence to the Parliament’s Magnitsky inquiry, she talked of Australia coming into the club. This week, the Parliament’s Human Rights sub-committee handed down its report recommending that Australia adopt its own Magnitsky Act. And with the European Union formally signing their Magnitsky agreement this week, the club is set to get bigger. ... The timing of this has been serendipitous, as today is #HumanRightsDay. Like-minded countries need to work together to uphold human rights and protect democracy Magnitsky legislation is one way we can do this.
24.01.2022 Last Friday, Australian National Veterans Arts Museum opened their annual exhibition of art by our veterans. 'March to Art: Place' is a special exhibition of photography by veterans who have connected and photographed places that have inspired them. Thank you to the Australian National Veterans Arts Museum for putting together this important exhibition.
24.01.2022 URGENT Australian Red Cross Lifeblood is in urgent need of blood donations. The service has been hit hard by COVID-19 restrictions, and has had more than 1,200 people cancelling appointments each day. ... Supplies of O+ and A+ have dropped to critical levels. The majority of Australians have either O+ or A+ blood type. Australian Red Cross Lifeblood needs 16,000 donations by the end of November.
24.01.2022 Today is World Kindness Day. 2020 has been an immensely challenging year for Australians due to the bushfires earlier in the year followed by the COVID-19 pandemic. I am dedicating World Kindness Day to all frontline and emergency workers. ... We couldn’t have done it without you.
24.01.2022 Happy Thanksgiving to our American friends celebrating this special holiday! As this year has taught us, quality time with family and loved ones is more important than ever. I am proud to co-chair the Australia-United States Parliamentary Friendship Group with Melissa McIntosh MP.... The group aims to further foster the important and strong relationship our two countries share
24.01.2022 12 DAYS OF PARLIAMENT On the fifth day: After a live interview on Sky, I was stopped in the Press Gallery hallway by Brett Mason from SBS News to discuss the Foreign Relations Bill which was before the Senate.
23.01.2022 It's been a long road to get here, but it finally looks as though Australia will adopt its own #Magnitsky legislation. These laws, which are designed to be a surgical tool rather than a blunt instrument, will help ensure that corrupt individuals and those who have perpetrated gross human rights abuses cannot find sanctuary in Australia. Thank you to Bill Browder, Geoffrey Robertson QC, Michael Danby and all those who have worked tirelessly in the background on this important legislation.
23.01.2022 On December 8th, Buddhists celebrate the enlightenment of Siddhartha Gautama, or Buddha. After years of study and introspection, Siddhartha meditated under the Bodhi tree and achieved enlightenment. This defining moment is central to the Buddhist religion, and I wish a #HappyBodhiDay to Buddhists all over the world.
23.01.2022 Good morning everyone! From me and Nancy Jane (Ninja)
22.01.2022 Congratulations Victoria
22.01.2022 There are so many places in Victoria that just take your breath away
22.01.2022 Today it is 102 years since the guns fell silent on the Western Front. On this day we remember the 40,000 Australians who gave their lives in that terrible war. We also remember those who did so in World War II and subsequent wars from Korea to Vietnam to Afghanistan.... Today, just as in 1918, we are grappling with a world-wide pandemic. While Australia has navigated this awful event better than most, too many are still mourning for their lost loved ones. But as this challenging year approaches its end, if we lift our eyes, we can see signs of better times ahead Australia’s success in suppressing the virus, good news in the development of a vaccine, a successful election in the US, including the largest voter turnout in its history and the normalisation of relationships in the Middle East. We must always resolve to do better. And the men and women of the Australian Defence Force are an example to all of us. They were there helping people evacuate parts of Australia that were being consumed by bushfires. They helped by land, by sea and by air. In so many places affected by coronavirus, they have helped. It is not only at 11.00am on the 11th of November that we should remember them. Lest we forget. #remembranceday
22.01.2022 12 DAYS OF PARLIAMENT On the eighth day: One of my Senate chamber duties is being a 'temporary chair'. This occurs when the President and Deputy President are absent from the Chamber. ... Auspic

The North Western Melbourne Primary Health Network is proud to present their HeadtoHelp phone service where you can speak to a trained health professional for support post-COVID 19 restrictions. Help is always there if you #HeadtoHelp
20.01.2022 In true 2020 fashion, even New Year's Eve looks a little different in Victoria. Both regional and urban parts of the state have cancelled New Year's Eve fireworks in order to avoid large gatherings. However, the City of Melbourne is hosting an outdoor dining program with its eleven new dining precincts. ... Along with all the flowing food and wine that Melbourne has to offer, there will be music performances to bring the city to life. What a typically Melbourne way to end such a difficult year on the city.
20.01.2022 December 5th marks International Day of the Ninja. I would like to give a special shoutout to my dearest Nancy Jane - aka "Ninja". But instead of using espionage, deception or surprise attack for the purposes of warfare, this Ninja deploys them to secure extra treats.
20.01.2022 12 DAYS OF PARLIAMENT On the twelfth day: I left Parliament House in the early hours after a busy sitting week, and the last sitting day of the year. ... I would like to wish everyone a very Merry Christmas! I hope everyone gets to enjoy some much needed family time as the end of this extremely difficult year draws near.
19.01.2022 Melbourne Music Week is usually held in November each year, but due to restrictions had to be delayed. However, to make the most of such unprecedented times and in an effort to support local artists, the festival has been extended to late February. Events are both online and in person!
19.01.2022 Momos for my real friends, Kukri for my sham friends (just kidding ). Melbourne is home to significant and established Bhutanese and Nepali communities. Their diasporas' unique traditions contribute to our inclusive and multicultural society. Over the weekend Bhutanese and Nepali Australians celebrated the Dashain Festival. Thank you Parsuram Sharma-Luital JP for the Senate Estimates sustenance!... *momos are a traditional steamed dumpling popular across the Himalayan region and Indian subcontinent. A kukri is a knife commonly used by the Nepali Gurkha.
19.01.2022 Well done Victoria Fourteen consecutive days of zero new cases
18.01.2022 We have so much gratitude to those responsible Victorians who are missing work in order to self isolate after their COVID-19 test. To see if you're eligible, please click the link below.
17.01.2022 12 DAYS OF PARLIAMENT On the tenth day: Anyone who works in Parliament House will tell you that upon the ringing of the division bells everyone stops what they are doing to look at one of the 2,700 clocks.... Each clock is fitted with two flashing lights that let us know whether it's a call to Members to the House of Representatives Chamber (green light) or to Senators to the Senate Chamber (red light). Each clock rings very (very) loudly and the lights flash. There are even flashing lights in the bathrooms and above external courtyard doors. Divisions can occur at any time when Parliament is in session. Captured here is a division at 12.06 - that is AM, not PM!
17.01.2022 It is always a privilege to support and encourage women in leadership positions. This week I had the great honour of sending my congratulations to a young woman who has just been elected school captain. The future of women in politics gets brighter by the day!

I spoke to Voice of America - VOA about President-elect Biden's plan to convene a summit of like-minded democracies to deal with the strategic challenges the world will face over the coming decades.

14.01.2022 The announcement of a Royal Commission into Defence and Veteran Suicide is welcomed but long overdue for many current and former serving ADF members. This is a result of the hard work and tireless campaigning of Julie-Ann Finney and countless others.
13.01.2022 It feels good to do as a Melburnian does again
13.01.2022 During my time in Parliament I have made it my duty to confront corruption and impunity wherever it may arise. There is no doubt that corruption exists at the highest levels of power, and in my maiden speech, I argued that Parliament should give serious thought as to the best and most effective ways to fight this. As public servants we have a duty to the Australian people to maintain these values and send a strong message that corruption will not be tolerated.... This year on #InternationalAntiCorruptionDay we are reminded that corruption thrives in times of crisis. Australia has reacted with urgency to this year's health and ensuing economic crisis. A national anti-corruption body is important to stay on track towards a fair and inclusive recovery from COVID-19. To #recoverwithintegrity it is important that we have measures in place to mitigate corruption in the bodies that govern us
12.01.2022 On this day in 1856, stonemasons and builders downed their tools and walked off the job in protest of their poor work hours. This was the first of a series of victories that led to the working conditions we enjoy today. "Eight hours to work, Eight hours to play, Eight hours to sleep, Eight bob a day. A fair day’s work, For a fair day’s pay."... National Museum of Australia
12.01.2022 The Department of Health and Human Services has established new testing sites and extended hours. 12.01.2022 Victoria celebrates World Teachers' Day on 30 October 2020. We acknowledge the resolute commitment of teachers, especially their tireless work in adapting syllabi to ensure continuity during the COVID-19 pandemic. I know from talking to teachers myself, particularly those in Melbourne, how much they care and worry about their students and how happy they are to see them again. ... World Teachers' Day is an opportunity to thank teachers who make an immeasurable contribution to our community. #WTD2020
12.01.2022 Good morning Victoria!
11.01.2022 I was delighted when human rights campaigner and father of the Global Magnitsky Movement, Bill Browder asked me to address a recent event to provide an update on where Australia is at with the introduction Magnitsky legislation (link to the full event in comments). In December last year, Australia’s Foreign Minister Marise Payne referred for inquiry to the Joint Standing Committee on Foreign Affairs, Defence and Trade an examination of legal measures to impose sanctions upon... individuals who commit gross human rights abuses and large-scale corruption (Magnitsky laws). It’s clear that the Foreign Minister would not have referred this to an inquiry unless she, and the government, were contemplating adopting such laws. While I have long advocated for this, Magnitsky legislation is now Federal Labor Party policy. The Government Chair of this inquiry has also given comment in the media that he expects the committee report to recommend Australia adopt Magnitsky laws. Similarly, crossbench members of the committee have been widely supportive. It is important that this receive bi-partisan backing. Protecting Australia’s democratic institutions and fighting against gross human rights violations and large-scale corruption do not belong to one side of politics. Australia always stands up for its values. You can follow the progress of the inquiry and the passage of Magnitsky in Australia at the committee’s page here: https://www.aph.gov.au//Foreign_Affairs_Defen/MagnitskyAct
11.01.2022 CONGRATULATIONS VICTORIA! After 28 days of zero cases, Victoria is officially free of COVID-19.

10.01.2022 Keeping secrets from the people without good reason undermines faith in our democratic system. The Freedom of Information Act does not simply allow the public access to documents, it is also an essential integrity and accountability mechanism. Contempt for the FOI act from any government is contempt for our democracy.... A great piece from the weekend’s The Canberra Times

09.01.2022 12 DAYS OF PARLIAMENT On the sixth day: I had a quiet moment of reflection with a coffee in the courtyard near my office.
09.01.2022 Today is International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women. According to the ABS, one in six Australian women and 1 in 16 men have been subjected, since the age of 15, to physical and/or sexual violence in a domestic setting. It is our duty to call out domestic and gendered violence or situations of violence against women and children. Our Watch, which is a national leader in preventing violence against women and children is campaigning that #DoingNothingDoesHa...rm. Domestic violence during the COVID-19 pandemic has often been referred to by the United Nations as the "shadow pandemic". Both the virus and the subsequent restrictions placed great pressures on family and home life and either exacerbated existing issues with violence or created them. Now more than ever, we need to have open discussions surrounding domestic violence policies and empower Australians to stand up and say something when they see gendered and domestic violence.
08.01.2022 When the boss gives you this look
08.01.2022 I was recently interviewed by the Voice of America about the ongoing trade tensions between Australia and China. As an export-oriented nation, we live by trade. It is a shame that in recent decades we have allowed ourselves to become so dependent on one country to receive our goods. But we should look at this as an opportunity to diversify our trade portfolio. Australia is an open-hearted country that welcomes visitors, students, investors and immigrants from everywhere, but if any foreign government tries to make silent obedience a condition to trade then there is essentially zero Australian public support for that.
08.01.2022 Here's to a fantastic weekend in Victoria! I hope everyone has a fun and safe one!
08.01.2022 The Daniel Morcombe Foundation was established in 2005 by Daniel's parents, Denise and Bruce Morcombe. 08.01.2022 We are prone to unpredictable weather here in Victoria but it's important to remember that even on overcast days the UV index can still be high. Australia has one of the highest rates of skin cancer in the world so it's important to take as many preventative measures as possible. Remember to wear sunscreen daily and check the UV index.
08.01.2022 Happy Monday everyone! I hope everyone has a good start to their week!
08.01.2022 A year ago today, four officers were tragically killed in a road incident on Melbourne's Eastern Freeway. Today we remember Leading Senior Constable Lynette Taylor, Senior Constable Kevin King, Constable Glen Humphris and Constable Josh Prestney who gave their lives while protecting others. Victoria Police have placed ribbons and floral tributes in their memory and Melbourne will light up in blue tonight to remember their lives. ... My thoughts are with their families and loved ones who are mourning this tragic loss.
07.01.2022 The parliamentary committee looking into whether Australia should adopt Magnitsky-style sanctioning legislation has tabled its report. Entitled 'Criminality, corruption and impunity: Should Australia join the Global Magnitsky movement?', this is the culmination of an almost year-long inquiry through which the committee heard from a range of stakeholders, including human rights activists, lawyers, dissidents, government departments and the founder of the Global Magnitsky Move...ment Bill Browder. The first recommendation of the report is that "the Australian Government enact stand alone targeted sanctions legislation to address human rights violations and corruption, similar to the United States’ Magnitsky Act 2012. You can read the full report at the link below, and I have included a handy explainer on what Magnitsky sanctions are in the comments.
07.01.2022 I visited St Vincent's Hospital Melbourne this morning with Labor's Health spokesman, Chris Bowen MP and Health Workers Union Secretary, Diana Asmar to thank health workers for their tireless work and resolute commitment during the COVID-19 pandemic. 05.01.2022 On #InternationalVolunteersDay we have an opportunity to thank those who have made significant contributions to many issues happening across the globe. Volunteers have been instrumental in overcoming the significant challenges Australia has faced this year. Firstly, during one of the worst bushfire seasons on record, and then at the forefront of the COVID-19 pandemic. ... International Volunteers Day shines light on the difficulties and needs of volunteers during crises, but also reminds us why they are an imperative part of our community. This year, the message for #IVD2020 is #TogetherWeCan through volunteering. Without those who dedicated themselves to supporting communities around Australia, we would be in an even more challenging position.
04.01.2022 Long weekend feels
04.01.2022 The theme for #NAIDOCWeek2020 is ‘Always Was, Always Will Be’. This week we celebrate the long and rich history of our First Nations people, their achievements and the survival of the oldest continuous living culture in the world. Indigenous culture touches every part of Australian life.
03.01.2022 I'm so glad the Australian Open is going ahead in February. It's not quite a typical Melbourne Summer without the tennis
03.01.2022 Congratulations to Joe Biden and Kamala Harris, President-elect and Vice President-elect of the United States of America. What this election has actually shown is that democracy is alive and well. More people voted in this election than ever before. ... Liberty, equality, justice a free and fair vote for all. One of the things that makes democracy so superior to its alternatives is its remarkable ability to adapt to changing ideas about society and morality all the while remaining constant to its roots of rule of the people. It is true that the United States and Australia are relatively new nations, but we are also among the oldest democracies in the world. A good man will make a great President of the United States: "He will raise you up on eagles' wings, bear you on the breath of dawn, make you to shine like the sun, and hold you in the palm of His hand."
03.01.2022 A thoughtful and gracious gesture by the Victorian Racing Club to donate its magnificent roses to COVID-19 front line workers and local community organisations after the Melbourne Cup. I can't think of more deserving recipients.

01.01.2022 Happy Howlaween!
01.01.2022 2020 has not only been the year of Zoom, toilet paper shortages and #WFH, but also a year of unprecedented challenge. For those who endured the imposed solitude and the disheartening disruption of lockdown, we've been reminded of what really matters: faith, family and freedom. Others, like health workers and many other essential workers, who risked everything for all of us in a confounding and troubling pandemic, remind us of the strengths that bind societies together: comp...assion, self-sacrifice and courage. Beyond our shores, around the world, freedom is under attack from increasingly self-assured foes. History teaches us that in united strength, we will prevail. Now is the time to celebrate the end of a testing year, and look towards a new chapter. Happy New Year!
