25.01.2022 It’s the change in season that brings the Gubinge out of their hibernation and bursting with life. Within a 4-6 week span all Gubinge are now with new leaves and some more advanced with flowers and today we found one setting fruit. This enables an 8 -10 week harvest season starting late December that allows picking right through January. It’s been a lovely cool start to normally one of the hottest months -October in the Kimberley, magic . . . 21.01.2022 Thanks for having us Parna Ngururrpa Aboriginal Corporation Rangers. Kiwirrkurra Rangers loved seeing your beautiful lakes and green country where everything is... breeding and seeding. Pythons, blue tongues and harriers all had eggs, we saw tracks of a baby bilby and baby emus, the cat we caught was pregnant and the Pangkuna trees and all the grasses were laden with seed. No wonder this rich and healthy Ngururrpa country is a hotspot for threatened species. See more

13.01.2022 Check out this incredible Gubinge leaf eating caterpillar . This little fella has grown very fat after munching on every leaf on one of the Gubinge we planted two years ago and there he is right up the top with no where else to go. Not a problem for us, Happy we can provide food for creatures. No spraying or killing necessary as everything stays in balance. The trees are entering a dormancy phase so would have potentially dropped its leaves on this variety anyway. Many trees... nearby though are flush with leaves. Hoping we get to see what transformation this fella goes through but this may be unlikely. 13.01.2022 The Monsoon Vine Thickets ( MVTs) are under enormous pressure. Mainly by landholders who are ignorant of how important and rare this ecosystem is. They are happy to bulldoze and plunder the last remaining areas for greed. The only way we can try and stop this is to expose and educate but we need groups like Environs Kimberley and Rangers to help and even our own communities.

10.01.2022 Our new paper Is Cat Hunting by Indigenous Tracking Experts an effective way to reduce cat impacts on threatened species? has just been published in the journ...al Wildlife Research. https://doi.org/10.1071/WR20035 The paper documents the hunting of feral cats for food on the Kiwirrkurra Indigenous Protected Area over a 5-year period and discusses the benefits of maintaining Traditional tracking-based hunting activities for conservation of threatened species such as the bilby and great desert skink. The study found that cat hunting by Indigenous tracking experts was a very efficient method of controlling cats at localised sites. Hunts took an average of 62 minutes per cat and a team of 4 hunters could catch up to 4 cats in one day. Our long-term data suggest threatened species (bilby and great desert skink) have persisted better in areas where there is an active presence of hunters. The ability to follow individual cats known to be hunting at bilby and great desert skink burrows allows this method to be very specific, targeting the individual predators that are pursuing threatened species. Regular hunting provides other co-benefits that contribute to the health of country (improved fire regimes) and the health and wellbeing of people. Finally, acceptance of Indigenous cat hunting as an effective tool for conservation programs provides a new relevance for Indigenous tracking expertise, that helps conserve these traditional skills in an era when there is less reliance on wild caught meat. The paper includes this quote from one of the authors, John West: These days there a lot of cats. They are killing all the desert finches and other things too, like bilbies. We have to save the bilbies. Theyre special animals They are only left here and a few other places. Thats why we are hunting and killing the pussycats, but there are more and more, so many now out here. What do they call them? Predators. Because they cheat. Making native foods and medicines available for our people ( especially those who cannot access themselves due to age or disability) is extremely important and a focus for us here. We dont tell a lot of people about this because its just normal to share with relations but we are happy that in Broome and on the Dampier Peninsula we have been giving out the Gubinge products since we started, especially in the Beagle Bay region.
